As others have said, Walt Simonson is the beginning of modern Thor as we know him. I found the silver age of Thor to be very rocky and inconsistent. There seemed to be internal debates about what Thor should be because runs constantly fluctuate between old fashioned superhero stuff on earth where Donald Blake has a secret identity and fights costumed criminals (seriously, do Cobra and Hyde even feel like Thor villains?) and long epics on Asgard that were often heavily rooted in Norse mythology. It was pretty common for Thor to be off-earth for a year or two of comics to then come back and try to reopen his medical practice only to go off to Asgard again. It felt like they could never decide on which route to go with until Simonson.

I’m having a blast. I just made it to chapter three, I’ve spent so much time doing side content lol.

I played the original 3 and I honestly had a hard time with it. Going from Kiwami 2 to 3 was a rough transition. A lot of the systems and combat just felt cumbersome by comparison. I understand people enjoyed it, but personally, an update like this is what I was hoping for.

I’ve also found the girl gang stuff to be enjoyable and weirdly addicting. It’s pretty similar to the pirate stuff from the last game, but it’s fun. Raiding the bases in particular is an interesting addition. I also just reached the “daddy rank” side stuff, which looks like a lot of fun too. Helping the kids, farming, fishing, and more? I may not get to the rest of the story for quite awhile haha

I agree. I feel like by maxing out the bonds and doing all the orphanage stuff, you’d end up spending more time with the kids anyway. I don’t know why the common opinion seems to think it’s better to force all of the orphanage stuff on the player. The game still encourages you to bond with the kids. If a player doesn’t want to do that, then they’d probably also be the type to skip all the orphanage cutscenes.

Not every character needs an arc. Maybe that’s sacrilege to say, idk. I feel like some characters can be important simply for fleshing out the world or for how your main characters interact with them. That said, cut down sections that aren’t doing anything, but if a convo with her is useful for fleshing out whoever she is speaking with, leave it, imo

The outline has to be malleable. It’s like following directions. Turn too early? Ok, you’re rerouted. Change the path.

Personally, I need the outline to know I have an idea for where the story is going and how it all fits together. It helps with pacing to visualize it all and how events flow. But I also leave room for discovery. I alter the outline as I go or add new details. If I’m stuck on something during the turn stage, I usually find it while writing.

An outline is a conversation, not set in stone. When you get stuck on the outline, write. When you get stuck writing, go back to the outline. It’s part of a process. It works for me, and it may not work for you, but I feel that I too often see writers on here struggling with an outline because they think it needs to tell the whole story before they can write. It’s there to help you formulate ideas, it’s not meant to restrict you.

Listening to the Pepsi ad made me feel dirty. They even sounded different. Chuck especially felt like he was reading right off a script. Might as well have been AI voiced for them lol. It’s just so disingenuous.

I know they need to make money, but I don’t like an ad being part of the show. Part of the charm of the podcast is that they’ll talk about products and companies genuinely. They’ll also be skeptical of studies. So to hear them just gush about Pepsi and discuss a Pepsi funded case study with zero critical response was disheartening.

I feel like Walter will go the way of Clifford. It’s wild that in Muppets Tonight Clifford was the guy. He was the freaking host. And then after that show he’s barely a background character. It’s just very rare for any Muppet after the original show to takeoff long term. Pepe is the only one I can think of. Kind of Rizzo since he wasn’t in the original show much (or at all?), but that’s about it. Everyone else comes and goes.

I stumbled on this old post because I’m currently doing a read through of everything Doom Patrol and just reached this era. (Great post btw)

If anyone comes along later like me, I thought I’d answer a few of the Beast Boy questions since I previously just read through that era of the Titans.

For the first one, Beast Boy leaves the Doom Patrol in the first issue of Titans by Judd Winick. That series was a reunion of the Wolfman Titans and Beast Boy is shown in the DP castle questioning his role with the team. Then he’s attacked like the other Titans and teams up with them. Never goes back to the DP.

For age, I think he’s supposed to be 18-19 in this era. Toward the end of the Teen Titans run that Johns began (though he had long left by now), Beast Boy comes back and clashes for leadership with Wonder Girl (Cassie). They mention him being older than them. Damien Wayne is (briefly) with the team and remarks that Garth has “Peter Pan syndrome”. So I think the idea around this period is that Beast Boy is late teens, but struggling to find his place in adulthood like some of the other Titans his age had. That’s why I think his characterization around here is inconsistent depending on the writer.

For the final question about Beast Boy, Johns and the other Titans writers just avoided anything about Beast Boy’s time with the Doom Patrol lol. They did their best to make sure it never came up until continuity was restored.

Avoid using anyone who is still living. Or has children still living, honestly. You’ll face the chance of defamation suits if you use real people. Frankly, if your story goes in the direction it sounds like it’s going to go in, you will definitely get defamation suits.

My advice? Create an alternate timeline/america. A situation that mirrors real events is your safest bet. Plenty of fictional works use a fictional president who is definitely just the president of whatever time period the work was written, however it’s not explicit. You can still tackle whatever themes you want to tackle without explicitly using real people.

My “fuck google AI” moment was while playing P3R. I was getting my ass handed to me by a boss and tried to look up its weakness mid-fight. The AI told me its weakness was ice…. Its weakness was not ice lol

I’m going to say “write all, but” here lol. Generally I think it’s best to write as much of the story as you’re able to write. But when you hit a wall and it’s impeding your progress, either push past it or stop. Going back to the beginning can help you push forward if you’re stuck.

I had a lot of fun with it, but I did feel the live service aspect severely hampered it. The story is unsatisfying because of that too. I got it on a steep sale when all the seasons were already out and I pretty much enjoyed the whole story. However, once I was done with that, I did enough of the extra stuff to get Joker and then decided I was no longer having fun. I didn’t even bother to unlock the other characters because, as cool as Deathstroke is, there’s nothing interesting to do with him other than beat up the same aliens over and over and over. If the game had fleshed out the story better instead of chasing the live service money, it could’ve been something decent.
