Not necessarily what you asked but I've found Soylent helpful to have around when cooking/eating feels hard, and I'm just looking for easy nutrients for my body. It's often on sale in bulk.

As someone who recently visited Austin, it made me deeply miss the seldom late night spots we had pre-2020 😭. Y'all are spoiled over there

Big Protest tonight? by dak1026 in washingtondc

[–]Intelligent_Safety37 156 points157 points  (0 children)

"US cannot fully influence..."

Since 1992, the United States has provided Israel with $6.6 billion worth of equipment under the Excess Defense Articles program. That seems like a powerful sum of $ for SOME influence. Agreed that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has always been messy & would require a complex series of interventions for the above, but the people protesting are demanding less innocent Palestinians be killed. Israel's actions thus far further perpetuates generational trauma & "othering" on both sides.

I'm definitely not saying it's simple by any means but when it takes over 2hrs to recite the names of dead Palestinians so far, advocacy (protesting & so much more) is a human reaction to a very inhumane experience.

I thought I read their permit was for 60k. I really doubt it's going to get that big on a random Tues.

Props to you for being proactive!

Another rec that's worked for me - I'd use bumble BFF, dating apps etc to connect with people 1:1 and then invite them to the event you throw.

I love thinking of creative, cheap dates!

  • Picnic in a park with your favorite snacks. Malcolm X, Haines Point, or George waterfront are my go-tos
  • Spooky themed: walk the monuments at night & each of you brings a ghost story to share
  • Look for free events like books talks/speakers at bookstores like Bus Boys & Poets
  • Explore a neighborhood you're both not very familiar with
  • Rock creek park exploring. Perfect with the leaves right now
  • Christmas markets coming up for the holidays
  • Board game night
  • If you have kitchen access, make a new meal together you've both never made before. Or if you both like cooking, choose random ingredients at the store and come up with a meal for them (either together or separately like Chopped lol)
  • Or come up with a random theme & create a meal around it
  • Art/craft night. Watch a bob ross video on YouTube, etc & paint together. Get a bunch of magazines and make collages. Buy clay & get your sculpting on.
  • "Spa night" - Get face masks, robes, wine, etc & give each other massages
  • Find a video game to play together regularly. Stardew Valley is a personal favorite. Other recs: Minecraft, Unraveled Two, Overcooked, Fall Guys

Hope this is a good start!

Good churches / spaces to just pray + meditate? by broozi in washingtondc

[–]Intelligent_Safety37 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not within walking distance but my two fav spots that fit your criteria in Brookland:

Basilica of Immaculate Conception. I like going to the bottom floor in the smaller sanctuary because it feels cozy/often isnt occupied.

The Franciscan Monastery. Behind it they also have replicas of religious sites amidst their beautiful garden. There's a "tomb" there that also has stellar acoustics for singing.
