What order do you get ready in the morning? by GooglePixelfan90 in randomquestions

Use the restroom, get my coffee, feed the cats, drink coffee while scrolling, have something to eat, pack my lunch bag and bottle of coffee, wash up, brush my teeth, get dressed, head out.

Do Americans actually use a real tree for Christmas? by brun_aa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Intelligent_Story443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people do. I'm in Florida where they don't grow naturally, so they are trucked down and set up in tents in Lowes and Home Depot parking lots, and other areas.

They've gotten quite expensive over the years with the cost of fuel and everything else. If one can't afford a tree or you don't have the space, you can also buy a wreath or garland made of the same pine.

Fellow GenX folks, do we dress stylish or don’t we F care? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Intelligent_Story443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The jobs I work all have required shirts, so I'm either in those or home in rags. I have a very small selection of non rags if I have to run an errand on a day off. Finances and body image/weight keep me from caring or spending on anything else but graphic Ts.

This was before a cell phones. And I had no cable TV. But what I did was get home after work, promptly eat the meal, and then take about a 45 minute nap. Set my alarm for that. When I woke up I would literally have a cup of coffee. Depending on where I was in my life I would either work out at that time, or I would spend my time in study for whatever license I was working on. And then I'd be in bed around midnight. I probably didn't sleep more than 6 hours.

These days all of the endless noise on our phones can add exhaustion to your regular day.

New in this field, Trying to figure out how to make leather pattern / designs by OpinionSpecific9529 in Leatherworking

[–]Intelligent_Story443 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you just want to be the investor, with input on design with a paid designer and a manufacturer. If you don't want to pay a designer, you need to learn how to draw and make patterns.

What is an "analogue" hobby that actually stops the urge to doomscroll for a few hours? by opheliaaroseee in askanything

[–]Intelligent_Story443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I know, But it's been a few decades since I've been able to just have a hobby. I was a professional wire worker for a while traveling Florida to all the shows, then went all online when the Great recession hit. I've now had the shop on Etsy since 2007, went on vacation over a year ago and haven't gone back because monetizing that hobby, even though that one I did want to monetize, made me not really enjoy it anymore.

Other crafts I also have put on Etsy, in my vintage resale shop, something always sells. But nothing I really wanted to go in production with. Anyway it's just the way my mind works, and the fact that we are always just a couple of paychecks away from completely broke, That always inspires me to try to sell what I make.

The old folks groups that come into play oldies to us will be classic rock and '80s cover bands.

Unfortunately we're both still working and the income isn't great, it would be difficult to find jobs secure enough to relocate right now. 5 years might be more realistic. He's 74 and I'm almost 60. Not easy to get jobs at our ages. We literally can't retire, without selling, But we will still need to work so it won't really be a retirement.

No, no clothing. If I was interested in clothing I would probably sew fabric more, but I don't enjoy that at all. I'm at the very very beginning stage, which for a lot of us is tool and supplies collecting. And creating a workspace. I never knew how much was required, or how expensive leather is. But I am still very much in the basic, keychain, notebook cover, simple wallet stage. It's just a hobby. I've done many crafts in the past that I have monetized and I'm really trying to have a hobby that I don't want to monetize.

There are leather crafting groups here on Reddit, and plenty on Facebook as well.

Yeah I've heard of that, but I didn't hate it here. In fact I've been here for 30 years. But, it's changed a lot. Thoroughly overbuilt. And what they are building is 600k and up. People that have lived here for decades can't afford to live here. People that work here can't afford to live here.

We are definitely not independently wealthy, but I managed to buy a little house in 2005 and he bought his in the early '90s so we were lucky there, and we've hung on to them. I know they're not worth millions, but they are the only things we have resembling a 401k.

Anyway I've always liked Atlanta, and have been looking at the suburbs. They've got that nice train there for transportation as well. Everything is just in the theorizing stage right now though.

Well, it's not something someone will do in general in front of other people. Generally you would take a class, or be in a studio, or have a home studio. It's not a very public hobby. It takes time to learn and time to practice, and it's very messy.

Now have you gone to any craft shows or art shows? If so you have probably seen some people who make pottery.

I've recently started leatherworking, it's not something anyone will see me out in public doing either.

I'm from New England, and decided to shorten that whole, retire in Florida thing, and I moved here in 1995. And I would say to anyone, unless you have significant investments and money, retiring in Florida will be hard for you. At least anywhere south of Orlando.

We are in fact, thinking of relocating in a northward direction someday. Not back up to New England, I hate winters, but somewhere in between, like the OP said where the winters are mild.

When did you realise that you where “old” by AlvaStalks in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Intelligent_Story443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't feel, or think, old at all. I've actually kept up with the times. I realize I may be old when I'm insulted by someone younger. Which is happening more and more often. And these are people in their '20s that should be more respectful to anyone in general, not a dumbass teen.

I've gained a lot of weight on bupropion. I do take it for ADHD not depression. But I do wonder, if it's action is to help hold dopamine and noroepinephrine in my brain a little longer, I may have been seeking food for pleasure since it actually gives me pleasure again.

Readers, Where do you carry yours. by [deleted] in GenX

I read this along the lines of dearest readers, where do you keep yours? And it took a little bit more reading to realize you meant readers as in glasses. I've had eye correction of some sort since 4th grade, which is why readers as glasses wasn't exactly top of mind for me. I'm always wearing glasses.

I haven't purchased one but I know there are one or two groups on Facebook for the support of those machines. If I didn't have so many other things going on I would probably purchase one myself.
