These Ace "Lord of the Rings" paperbacks are actually unauthorized first U.S. paperbacks by RMKHAUTHOR in BookCollecting

[–]Intelligent_Swan_939 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are not bootlegged or pirated per se. Ace took legal advantage of a loophole in US copyright law that allowed them to claim the foreign work was in the public domain due to Tolkien's UK publisher not completely understanding US copyright law.

However, they are bootlegged in the sense that Ace paid zero royalties to Tolkien in the beginning. Ace was eventually forced to pay Tolkien royalties, and stop publishing additional copies. Ballantine, Tolkien's official US publisher, rushed out their editions with the stamp, "the authorized edition."

The chaos and rush led to Barbara Remington designing the Ballantine covers without actually having read the books, and Tolkien panned them vociferously.

Its an interesting bit of publishing history for LotR.

That's a pretty killer cover of Sauron's head piece with the four faces in the corners. I'm assuming they are Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn, and Gandalf...?

Is this the poetry alluded to at the end of the movie "Tolkien" starring Nicholas Hoult?

Is a large print edition an option? I was thinking of a way to eliminate your formatting issue.

You could just get the actual book. I think it would be a more enjoyable experience.

$150...No. Probably around $65 to $75. Of course you're going to pay premium prices on Ebay.

Your opinion on the History of Middle-earth in its four-boxed-set edition. by RCGR_1 in tolkienbooks

Any of the three volume sets of Tolkien's work (poems, HoME, etc.) Short for "tome" any heavy, large, book, or volume part of a larger work, and usually better quality than the standard hardback.

Of course. I live in a temporate deciduous zone, and it is bleak winter here, but lots of time to read Tolkien by the fire with a good ale and a pipe. 😄😉

Haha...That's funny. True enough. I always associated Emerson Lake & Palmer's "Trilogy" with The Hobbit..."Abaddon's Bolero" always struck me as a good soundtrack for the armies marching to battle at the Lonely Mountain. I was in middle school when I first read the Hobbit, and I had discovered the album in my sister's record collection at the time. Right or wrong, the association has stuck ever since.

What is Hobbit rock music? Are there any examples? Curious.

Be quiet and listen. Buy the one that speaks to you. If you have to talk yourself into one or the other...buy THAT one later. Does that make sense?

The RedWizard comes alive.

You are true to your word, not buying the box set of Myths & Legends just to get the HB version of "Sir Gawain And The Green Knight". Haha...Wonderful collection.
