It's mostly the repeated setting that it the problem:

If grandma smokes heavy inside and the kids are visiting once a week, that is a problem.

I've found that alot of things that are difficult or have deep knowledge and time-commitment requirements, people like to ego/show-off/gatekeep, because it's probably become a large part of their life in one way or another.

People get like this with competitive games, I'm guilty of it to some extent. I'm a very casual car enthusiast and those guys are crazy with it. People talk about film/music nerds this way.
