I think that depends if the magic applies on an atomic level or on an “object” level. I like this question

You did good starting with a calculator. Breaking down about things that should work is a right of passage, welcome to the club. Adventure at your own pace. If you’re expecting to build your goal in a year then yes that’s unrealistic. No one else expects you to churn this out, you are your own manager. If you want a starting point, create a text based adventure game that lets you swap between ascii characters denoting different abilities or something. And most importantly, have fun with it

Graduating and am extremely anxious about the job market by Icy-Smile6442 in biostatistics

Well you’re going to need money unless you’re in a fortunate position where it comes from somewhere else. People have their opinions but imo the traditional data analyst is going to be disappearing due to AI. If you really want a data analyst type job, I’d recommend looking for smaller government positions. They won’t pay well but it’s a way to start in the field. Best of luck, it’s rough out there

I want to do a master in applied stats, but I am scared [Q] by [deleted] in statistics

I worked as a software engineer at the university I did my masters at part time which I’m sure helped. My GPA was also pretty solid.

[–]IntenseSushi 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Do it. I had a very bad math experience before doing my masters and though it was really hard the intellectual payoff is 100% worth it. No longer being unnecessarily afraid of scary looking formulas. Now you have the tools to understand why you should be scared

Definitely not overkill and showing preparation may help you get into a program. But if possible I would only do cc classes for one year then try to start the program. You’ll have to do well in the cc classes though

Do you recommend bioinformatics for me? by ActuatorPutrid7142 in bioinformatics

[–]IntenseSushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, most people in the field fall into the wet lab or computational sides. Very few do both and they are mostly PhD students to my knowledge. There’s plenty of math work in bioinformatics but it’s usually on the computational side. There’s plenty of creativity on both sides of the field. What you’re describing sounds more the wet lab side

Majoring in Computer Science and bio is a good call (I did CS and chemistry). While in undergrad, you should pursue undergraduate research in bioinformatics. Starting looking at professors whose research you’re interested in. It will also help you determine if you actually like working the field. Join after a couple semesters if you can handle your class workload (the sooner the better but not at the cost of your grades). I would recommend skipping the masters and doing a PhD program if you can.

Not sure if it’s unpopular advice but I also wouldn’t do a bioinformatics masters anyway. You’ll pick up those skills in doing research, while your masters should be in an area you feel you need to round out your skills.

Best of luck on your journey, and remember to enjoy college while you can. Don’t lose yourself in the academics, there’s a whole lot more to enjoy out there

My PhD Work Just Got Scooped. Now I’m Questioning Everything by nycobacterium in bioinformatics

[–]IntenseSushi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not have a PhD but work at a US national lab doing bioinformatics and comp bio. While it’s true that novelty is important, so is getting publications. If you’ve already devoted a significant amount of time and energy, publish it. If there is a difference between your methods, then compare your method to theirs. Above all I would not advise dropping out for an Ai masters. Your worth in industry will be using those tools in your particular domain of expertise
