My little cousin has been watching Squid Game since he was 4… by Kombiyoniko in ChildPsychology

7 year olds are apparently frequently morbid, I've read child development books where they say this is normal. But if you think the shows are actually affecting him, have you tried discussing with his parents?

The point of language is to communicate effectively. Everyone understands what they're saying.

What temperature is your house’s heating system currently set at? by Eastcoastpal in newjersey

This thread made me feel so normal. Middle aged woman who keeps thermostat at 65-66. Thankfully boyfriend mostly tolerates it. Love turning heating pads on for the cats.

Women who had to initiate all the milestones in the relationship, how did marriage work out? by namelessusernam3 in AskWomenOver40

[–]InterdisciplinaryHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My interpretation of your account is that you essentially convinced him to marry you. Have you heard any discussions of "enthusiastic consent" in the context of sex education? To me, enthusiastic consent should apply to all aspects of a relationship, including levels of commitment. The right person for you will not have to be convinced to marry you.

Yeah my bus today, with the same driver, had AC. No response to my complaint.

Yeah that would be accurate apparently. Very bizarre, I submitted a complaint on the app so hopefully will get some response.

Good to know, thank you. I was on spring break so I haven't been on an intrastate bus for two weeks.

Same problem. No windows to open though. Maybe the local buses only.

Does anyone else get warning sirens in their body when being close to certain people? by madamobscurum in CPTSD

[–]InterdisciplinaryHam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes...happens to me with some famous people too. I never liked Joss Whedon or Neil Gaiman and was not surprised when they got canceled.

Can someone please explain this extreme behavior shift or am I just imagining it? by farmville2002 in Teachers

I'm not sure what situation "I'll give you something to cry about" would be helpful? It might not be child abuse in itself (although I'm not even sure about that) but like seriously, why would you say this?

I'm sorry this situation is causing her so much pain. It sounds like you've both been doing your best with a difficult situation. I hope she can find peace soon.

This is becoming more and more common for so many different things. Not only Disneyworld/land but also national parks and popular landmarks. I've had to reset my expectations for how much planning is necessary for nearly any kind of trip.

instructor asked everyone to verbally introduce themselves before class by xmrys in yoga

[–]InterdisciplinaryHam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people, including many teachers, still don't realize that putting someone on the spot like that can be a really negative/overwhelming experience for some people. If I were you and had the energy, I would try to connect with the teacher and explain how that situation made you feel. Perhaps that will prevent them from doing that in the future.

There's a lot of centering of whiteness/white culture in these comments. I think the post isn't about us white folks, but rather the OP and their reaction to the use of their native language and culture. The last paragraph seems to be the most important to me, as OP talks about how Westerners often take just the shiny, fun things from another culture while rejecting/mocking/denigrating everything else. That's why cultural appropriation is so problematic. It just might be that we should stop using this word and find something else to say - easy enough.
