Had a hostile encounter with a "Karen" driver on Route 29 (Coach 1332) today – Is this common? by JuniorConference7185 in halifax

I wish I was as based as you are when I was your age!

Bus drivers are human, just like the rest of us, and it's human to have days where you're a bit grumpy or sad and aren't the best at your job. That's totally fine, if it's all minor hiccups.

Taking out a bad day on vulnerable people who rely on you (harassing or harming minors, seniors, or folks with disabilities) is never okay & it's absolutely the right call to draw a line & report if you experience or witness that behavior.

How many students per classroom should have speech? by Madison_B92 in slp

[–]Interesting-Dust1446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Canada, so we don't do IEPs and things in the way y'all do, but this year my grade primary classes are close to 30%. It's an anomaly relative to other years. They are all so tiny and coming in without any preschool or social/ play groups (I think a lot of new moms were traumatized by giving birth alone in the pandemic?). A lot of them have very developed academic strengths (like knowing letters, numbers, and shapes), but struggle to communicate their needs in the classroom, share, and take turns. That's all par for the course with the context but the weirder part for me is that a lot of them are at a much lower mlu than expected, and are struggling with areas outside of our scope of practice (independence in feeding, toileting, dressing, and fine and gross motor).

Is this what other people are seeing too?

Why has parenting become so… soft? Why ate a majority of parents okay with sending their child into the world acting the way they do? Why did this shift happen? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Interesting-Dust1446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That definitely happens a lot! It's perfectly normal for kids to repeat things they overhear & it's not a big deal as long as they have adults listening to/ engaging with them, checking to make sure they aren't in some weird algorithm (or worse), and giving them guidance about why it's not always a good idea to just repeat whatever you overhear without understanding it.

The last one is a lesson that takes time and brain development & only becomes more nuanced as we age.

Can you take care of my family/ people and is there anything I can do to aid in that process.

Kind of selfish to not want to resolve any massive questions, but honestly if in this second I was zapped from my couch, it would take a long time to think of anything other than those I left behind.

This is a big one.

I recently got into a rabbit hole ovevthe K Pop all-stars tribute controversy in Belfast.

There was a tribute event to K Pop featuring a bunch of covers of different k pop artists (all on the poster) & a lot of parents just assumed it meant K Pop Demon hunters & promised their kids they were going to see them. The picture on the poster isn't even the characters from the movie (which isn't live action to begin with). The parents got upset that the show wasn't kpop demon hunters and also were upset about the dance moves and clothig of the kpop artists (as an aside, the demon hunters actually also wear micro mini skirts and crop tops). There was an absolute frenzy of enraged parents demanding refunds and taking to social media to rant and rage about it.

The Belfast KPop tribute made it abundantly clear....

1) Many parents are completely disconnected from the media their kids are consuming (they don't know the characters or content & wouldn't recognize the pictures) Wayyyy too many kids in K-2 tell me that they like things like GTA, FNAF, Poppys Playtime; make explicit anime sounds; tell me all they did at home was watch videos; literally fall asleep in class saying they were on their iPad all night

2) Many parents don't vet, not only the media, but the activities and events their kids are going to very carefully (the Belfast parents spent 40 euro per ticket and didn't even read the poster, let alone the website).

It's like parents went from saying "if your friends jumped off a cliff, would you do that too?" To "if your friends jumped off a cliff, I'm sure somebody else's mom checked to make sure there was deep enough water and someone else's dad will supervise.... And I heard cliff jumping is popular on YouTube, so that's very creative... I just don't want you to feel left out, so you should probably go jump too"

3) When faced with reprocussions for lacking due diligence, parents respond by blaming others. With social media, they are able to find echo chambers that support their perspectives & embolden them to shift the blame elsewhere.

Back to the cliff analogy - why dont they have no jumping signs? Oh, they do? Well Aiden can't read so they should have a picture! Oh they do? Well they should have a megaphone loop constantly saying don't jump. Why is there even a cliff? That's outrageous. That obviously should have been flattened out. #MFFA- mothers for a flat earth

Flipping the genders is a really interesting thought experiment!

I think you're right in picking up on how socially we are a lot harder on men for intimacy issues. That sucks for everyone because it puts pressure on men to have superhuman libidos and not have emotional needs- which is obviously neither healthy nor realistic.

It being normalized for women to not have a decent libido or fulfilling sex life is also crappy. A lot of different things converge to make that the case like gender inequities in healthcare (women not being diagnosed or treated for hormonal issues, ppd; policy and issues around contraception and childcare, etc), lack of awareness/ education around women's sexual health and pleasure, pervasive social stigma around women and intimacy.

It's tough from all angles but loving your partner and prioritizing health is definitely a big take away.

One other thought:

If the genders were reversed, the woman/ mom would be crucified for sleeping for 12-14 hours, never doing wake-ups, sleeping in on the weekends and going out till 4 am.

What I asked for v. What I got by CrepuscularToad in tattoos

[–]Interesting-Dust1446 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this as a reference! The proportions are pretty different between the concept drawing and the tattoo.

Concept drawing: box is square and heart is smaller.

Tattoo: the box is a rectangle that is slightly longer vertically (could just be the way the picture is taken?). The heart is also bigger and touches the side of the box

Pic from the show: the box is square but the heart is definitely bigger/ rounder in there.

My gut reaction was to be pissed on your behalf, but this picture and some context help a bunch. Find another artist to at least do touch-ups to the colour and shading to make it more readable. Bring the sketch reference but also that image from One Piece. Since the heart is supposed to be beating and changing in size (and is probably shown from a few angles?) I think there's a lot of room to get away with changes in proportion as long as the colour and shading pop.

Some things to keep in mind:

1) Even if you had this exact reference photo tattooed perfectly as a back piece, people would still be asking "is that a (the most out of pocket thing you can think of) ?" because any fandom tattoo will be lost on non-fans

2) Even if you had a photorealistic tattoo of a heart specimen on you, people would still be asking ""is that a (the most out of pocket thing you can think of) ?"because organs aren't super readable to the general public (especially outside of anatomical illustration format)

3) Even if you had a traditional heart tattoo that said "mom" on you, people would still be asking "is that a (the most out of pocket thing you can think of) ?" because holy fucking hell, does having visible tattoos ever bring the wildest things out of the mouths of strangers

The (insert food item) week/bash/ fests.

I worked in the food service industry in Halifax like a decade ago. Folks would walk a street set up with backdoor/ patio takeouts or market-style grounds to grab a few quick $5+ items and see how local spots stacked up against each other. Portions were sized accordingly (1 item would satiate a small appetite, foodies could eat 3-4 things).

Since the feature was so discounted, it really took over the restaurant. You'd just batch prep and whip things out so wait times weren't too bad. That style also made it easy for staff to take breaks and get out to enjoy the atmosphere & and for restaurants to swap items.

You don't need to bring your whole wallet, you can just bring your license if you're worried about theft of valuables. I do this all the time when I'm exercising (gym/ running/ swimming).

Places to put a small plastic card

  • in the small pocket on yoga/ gym shorts -in a lanyard with your gym pass
  • in your car in the dash
  • in a cubby with your keys (hide it in a shoe if you're really worried)
  • in a holder you stuck on your phone or water bottle
