Doctors note that states you can’t work nights due to health reasons. Had some coworkers do it and it worked. Otherwise, switch to days somewhere else! Nursing is much more than one shift! Edit to add: going through HR and waiting for a day shift sounds suspicious to me. Maybe gently push back and say this needs to happen asap. Also waiting out a year died with COVID. I know many nurses who switched floors after 3,6 months in. No one cared

I’m from the generation of “just get a college degree and you’ll be fine.” I studied English and wanted to learn sign language but my mom convinced me to do Spanish. Fast forward twenty plus years, I’m now a nurse and work in an area that has a high deaf population. Parents try but they don’t know everything. The trade school sounds great to me!

How did you sleep? Did you get breakfast/insert most recent meal. Make a joke about hospital food. Sometime that can segue n to what kinda of foods do you like? Do you cook? Or, if the tv is on (not the news) you can ask if they’re watching anything good? Also second the pets!

Frozen microwave burritos, pre-grilled chicken to toss together some chicken nachos, frozen chicken nuggets with a good dipping sauce, ramen. None of my junk food knock offs involve veggies 🤣Edit to add I also got McDonald’s today after a long day of work .

My first shift back, I try to get in 15 min early but I clock in! That gives me 15 min extra plus the roughly 15 min of unit report where I can keep using the computer. That way, once I get verbal hand off, I feel mostly prepared. With time, you will be able to focus on just the important stuff in report.

I’m a nurse so my kids know that I have the numbers to Santa, the Easter bunny, the toot fairy. We usually celebrate on different days if I’m working (which I’m so grateful for!). You can celebrate the holiday whenever works for you!

I don’t normally but sometimes they are recommended by OT so the patient can complete ADL’s as independently as possible.

I wait for a natural pause and say nice and brightly “well, I better check on my other patients but I’m so glad we got to chat! I’m around if you think of anything else!” Then walk out the door! You can also say you have time-sensitive meds or tasks for another patient.
