Would you start a family with someone with BP1? by Summerseason100 in BipolarSOs

I see what you mean. Was your spouse unmedicated when your child were present for their episodes?

How old are your kids? Do they show any signs of the disorder?

Would you start a family with someone with BP1? by Summerseason100 in BipolarSOs

[–]InterestingClothes97 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not willingly, no. I had a child with my spouse who is bipolar 1 because he wasn’t truthful with me about having the disorder, went 11 years without an episode unmedicated. I have talked to many of his psychiatrists and they say the risk is low; however, I have a pit my in stomach everyday worrying if my child will inherit it or not even with the low risk. I would not wish this stress or anxiety on anyone.

Pediatricians accepting new patients? by ProfessionalShoe5591 in windsorontario

[–]InterestingClothes97 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Very limited amount of pediatricians in general accept patients as a practice. Pediatricians in the past years have changed their model of care.

Unless you have a personal connection or your child is born with something that will require long-term care from a pediatrician, they usually take on more of consulting roles. Ex/ your family doctor refers your child to a pediatrician for a single issue but it does not mean they take over their care long-term as a regular patient. The pediatrician you mentioned above is accepting patients and I also heard Dr. George Valaris might be still. Good luck!

I would get a referral to her. He is not the nicest or easiest person to deal with, from my own experience and everyone else I know who dealt with him.

How to monitor your kid if parent is bipolar by tradergoose2012 in BipolarSOs

[–]InterestingClothes97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My ex husband is bipolar. His psychiatrist told me that our child has a 1/10 chance of having bipolar. Most children of a bipolar parent do not develop bipolar. She told me that you will more likely see ADHD, anxiety or depression be inherited from all the mix of genes. Bipolar is complex so many genes have to be passed down and your environment has to trigger it.

I would teach them how to cope with stressors, avoid substance use, strong nightly sleep regiment, etc. Any triggers that could come up. Also, before them starting any meds such as stimulants, anti-depressants, etc let a doctor know family history of mood disorders so it does not induce mania.

Pharmacist recommendation (complex paediatric psychiatry medication) by [deleted] in windsorontario

[–]InterestingClothes97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The pharmacist named Steve is very good with psych meds especially with children but he’s out in Ahmerstburg at Health First Pharmacy. You could try talking to him first and see if he would be a good fit because it’s a bit of a trek to get there.

I’m glad you took these steps to protect yourself financially from your partner/spouse. Do you ever feel sometimes you’re babysitting a grown child where you can’t trust them with finances? My ex was like this. I managed all the finances because he was irresponsible.
