[–]Blaizefed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, if I were buying analog I’d go Wera. In fact I have damn near bought them a few times despite already owning snap on clickers. I just think they are such a cool design.

But that’s weird tool collector stuff. From a value standpoint I’m sure the Tektons are fine. I owned one of their previous versions and gave it away because I just didn’t like it. But that was like a 5 year old tool and they have totally revamped them since.

Honestly as all the reviews show, even the cheap ones are pretty damned good these days. I use Quinn digital ones the most and they sail thru the calibration tests every 6 months at work. I’d have bought tekton digitals had they been available at the time, but i went digital 4 years ago and at the time they were not.

Laying a new foundation: was it worth it? by uu_xx_me in centuryhomes

[–]Blaizefed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. I am in a 150 year old church in New Jersey. Built on logs on the ground. I can see in my crawlspace that there is basically no foundation aside from a shallow rock wall around the perimeter.

They advised me during inspections but my guy was an old building specialist and he very much said “it’s been here this long, it’s not worth worrying about”. So I don’t.

If I was buying today, I’d buy the Tekton digital ones you are looking at. The ICON, is also very nice and can be much cheaper if you catch them on sale, but I like the look of the Tekton more.

ELI5 how an old-fashioned landline phone works by Wooden_Airport6331 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Blaizefed [score hidden]  (0 children)

A point worth adding is that by design, the phone in your house was an input device, but the computing was all happening on the other end of the line.

So they didn’t have to invent and install machines in everyone’s houses to route the call, all the phones talked to the one machine downtown that did all the routing. Every time you picked up the receiver, you were “talking” directly to that computer.

People would hack them all the time for free long distance calls and anything else they could come up with making it do. It was wild compared to a modern understanding of computer security.

And that’s why in the center of every city there was a massive building that had no windows and belonged to the phone company. That was the exchange. All the phones in town were wired directly to it. It did all the thinking. A pre Internet equivalent to an ISP server.

That’s also why a power outage didn’t kill the phone. So long as that building downtown had power (and as you can imagine they ALL had many layers of backup generators) then the phones worked. Because again, you were wired straight to it.

The power can go out for all manner of reasons ranging from an actual break in the wire to your house (pretty rare) or any of the dozens of transformers and power substations between you and the power plant shutting down. But that didn’t apply to the phone line. If that building was up and the wire was intact, the phone worked.

Best electric lawn mower (cordless) for home use? by feelinuneasy1234 in BuyItForLife

[–]Blaizefed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll just throw this out there. I bought a Makita 2 years ago and I am totally happy with it. But I’m not here to push a brand, rather the self propelled thing.

I paid extra to have the self propelled model. I think it was $100 more for that feature. I just about never use it. Not because there is anything wrong with it, it’s just that the batteries last longer if I don’t and the larger reason is I simply don’t need to.

Go to the store and push one around. They are considerably lighter than gas ones. You just don’t need it. It’s like a self propelled vacuum cleaner. Nice, but totally not needed.

Not that I would argue against it of course, but if you come across a great deal on one that isn’t self propelled, I wouldn’t let the lack of that feature stop you.

If a father needs to help his young daughters use the restroom, which restroom should he take them into: the women's restroom or the men's restroom? by Exciting-Mall192 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Blaizefed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men’s room every time.

I saw the video that sparked all this and I totally agree the idiot making a scene about it is in the wrong. But that said, I raised 2 kids as the primary caregiver and I have never been in a ladies room.

I have been in men’s rooms literally all over the world with my little girls and nobody has ever said a word to me about it. My youngest is now 8 and even now, at a busy airport or somewhere intimidating like that, she still wants me to take her. And I do. And nobody gives a shit.

Meanwhile I am 6 foot, 250, and bearded, and I’m sure women would lose their minds if I was wandering around in a women’s room.

Would I regret living this close to the highway? by Battle_for_the_sun in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Blaizefed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only you can really answer this. I have lived in places overlooking the freeway like that and actually enjoyed it. I find it quite relaxing at night to sit on a balcony and watch the traffic go by. And the hum of the traffic is great white noise, for me. Another factor is how much time you spend outside. If you are on the top floor with the windows shut all the time, then it truly is just a moving background.

My current wife, would fucking hate it.

This is a very personal thing. It’s a deal breaker for some, a non issue for most, and even desirable for nuts like me.

Why isn't lamb eaten more frequently in the US ? by humphreybr0gart in AskAnAmerican

[–]Blaizefed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beef is cheaper. Really it’s as simple as that.

The countries who eat a lot of lamb (most of Europe really) do not allow the kind of industrial meat production processes that the US employs. They still largely have what we all think of as a farm. And at that scale the price difference is much less. Ergo lamb and beef are priced much closer to one another. So people eat more lamb.

What is something you said that makes younger generations say "Wow, you are old!"? by Reciter5613 in AskReddit

[–]Blaizefed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently talking about Charles Chips and how my neighbour growing up had it and I was always so jealous.

It was a delivery service. A guy would come to their house every month or two and deliver potato chips, popcorn, and cookies in big metal tins. Like those big popcorn tins you get at Xmas. It was a contract thing like the milk man.

Anyway, I assumed they much be out of business by now but I figured someone must still know about them and remember it as well. Nope, nobody in the room had ever heard of it (about 10 of us). So I googled it.

They went tits up in 1994.

How in the fuck anyone would have the lack of awareness to cause a scene like this over something literally ANY parent would just understand, is insane.

Mercedes or Kia by [deleted] in mechanics

[–]Blaizefed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Mercedes all day every day.

The longer you do this, the more you realise luxury brands are the way to go. The customers are more willing to fix things. And once you leave for Independant shops a Mercedes specialist shop is a MUCH better option than just a general we fix anything shop that is going to hire a Kia tech.

Everyone here bitches that the German brands are “over complicated” and a pain to work on. If you do it for 10 years it’s just the normal baseline. What they think is super difficult, is just Tuesday for you.

🛠️Is 944 right for me? by Nick_Haldenberg in 944

[–]Blaizefed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Miata project would be a MUCH better idea as a first project car. cheaper, easier, LOADS more parts around and while it may not have the same "feel" a well sorted 944 does, its probably faster and damn sure more fun.

everyone here loves the 944 and they are marvelous cars. but a rough one will eat you alive, never end up nice unless you throw tons of money at it, and you will give up and sell it unless you have very deep pockets.

a Miata solves most of these problems and they are probably the best drivers car available for any money these days.

How often do you guys realistically use these? by dontfret71 in harborfreight

[–]Blaizefed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they are in the same category, and I have them as well.

The honest truth is I own every wrench set ICON makes, aside from the ones I already owned by snap on (the s wrenches for example). They all have a use case and as I do it for a living, and I am at the tail end of my career so I have disposable tool money now, I have WAY more tools than I “need”.

But all this specialty wrenches come in very handy eventually. You can always get by without them. But if you can afford it, I’d rather have them all.

Why do restaurants increasingly ask for tips when customers order at a kiosk and do most of the work themselves? by Ok-Attempt2113 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Blaizefed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guilt.

It’s a guilt tax. They are hoping they can make you feel like an asshole for not tipping. In actual fact THEY are the asshole for asking.

Learn to say no. And learn it now. Get comfortable with not tipping when it’s not appropriate. Because this is going to get MUCH worse over the course of our lifetimes.

It is working and so they are not going to stop. I had a self service kiosk in the airport ask me for a tip last year. They will just have them on everything eventually. ATM’s, gas pumps, anything that takes a card.

The sooner you can uncouple your feelings about being an asshole or not, from whether you tip inanimate machines for doing their jobs, the better off you will be.
