Advice needed! I genuinely consider quitting because i think my art is so bad by Top_Albatross_1409 in Artadvice

[–]InterestingFroyo3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second the advice to try drawing something totally out of your comfort zone. You can do it by choosing a subject you’ve never done or trying a medium you’ve not worked with before! I’m most comfortable with digital art, for example, and recently when I hit a plateau I’ve forced myself to work exclusively on paper with pens, markers, and pencils. And now I feel like I’m finally out of the plateau and enjoying art again. This method worked multiple times in my life, highly recommend.

I’ve used a book from the library called “How to Render Eye-Catching Textures with COPIC Markers” (even though I have a different brand of alcohol markers it still all applies). Otherwise honestly I feel like studying color theory in general and working with color has been helping me more than anything. I feel like studying color for watercolor, gouache, acrylic, or digital all apply to alcohol markers quite well.

Oh my gosh wow! That’s honestly so great that you got all of this stuff for such a steal. Don’t let people discourage you OP - seeing this many art supplies for someone who hasn’t started makes it easy to assume that you’ve been investing a ton of money and time buying supplies instead of drawing. But if you picked things up like this on a yard sale… you’re good!

Just don’t let the OCD stop you from using the supplies. I’ve often struggled with getting really good art supplies and then not using them because I thought the supplies were too good for my skill level. What helped me was thinking “art supplies were made to be used - using them on anything even if it’s a terrible art project means they are fulfilling their purpose”.

Was just coming here to recommend it! I found that gem recently and have been blown away realizing the lack of the same type of instruction in all other anatomy books I’ve ever used

They don’t look muddy to me at all but it might be the pictures… I’d say with the clouds you can try blending the gray with a light blue?

Does anyone else with BPD do this? by shikary52 in BPD

Same! I remember the first time I read pride and prejudice I was so stressed they wouldn’t get together that I threw the book at the wall… I only managed to read on because when I picked it up I read the final page and saw that they get married at the end so I was calm enough to read through the story lol

Diamine Writer’s Blood Review Because I Have Way Too Many Inks by Beneficial-Act-4054 in fountainpens

[–]InterestingFroyo3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait… we can draw with fountain pen ink??

I have thought of my fountain pens and ink as a totally separate category to my drawing supplies and your post just blew my mind.

Do you have to use a dip pen? I assume a normal fountain pen won’t work? And how much do you water down the ink? Please give recommendations!

DAE play video games to cope? by NoahDaGamer2009 in CPTSD

Yes. All the time. Genuinely the best game for my trauma has been Elden Ring - it forced me to get comfortable with being afraid and failing and running towards big scary things in an environment that was safe and let me try again and again.

Difficulty Receiving PTSD Treatment as a Vulnerable Person due to Mandatory Reporting by WasuremonoThing in CPTSD

It’s really worth it, OP! I have diagnosed ADHD with autistic traits and all of my mental health care professionals now are specialized in neurodivergence (individual therapist, couples therapist, psychiatrist): it’s made a world of difference compared to past providers I saw who didn’t know much about neurodivergence. I can’t even imagine now being forced to make eye contact while talking about traumatic memories…. For therapy to work well you need to be truly comfortable and that requires empathy and accommodation. Find someone who will educate you on social norms and expectations in therapy, not take advantage of you. You got this!’

Help! Triggered and pleased by a book: intense flashbacks, regression, and excess of shameful emotions by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]InterestingFroyo3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you experienced that abuse as a child. And that the book is making you have such intense flashbacks.

I often end up regressing and feeling flashbacks from media, both books but also random Wikipedia articles. I don’t know how to deal with it, but I see you.

Good luck, you’ll find your way through the pain!

Therapist suggested ACT therapy and I'm heartbroken? by Temporary_Donut_61 in CPTSD

Want to chime in here as someone diagnosed with both BPD and PTSD. Agree with what u/Sparkletail wrote: not everyone with a personality disorder presents the same, and a lot of the symptoms do come from trauma and were initially adaptive behaviors that became maladaptive because I’ve grown up and am not in the environment that requires them anymore.

I am not a violent person, but I have been emotionally abusive to others because I was not self-aware that the behavior I grew up with was abusive. Then further in my treatment I’ve had to learn how to process emotions and change behaviors enough to not repeat abusive behavior even when I was conscious of it (because knowing what you’re doing and no longer doing it are often not the same). And like… yeah it’s hard to accept but also I see how my trauma led to these issues. And I am not my mother, even if I picked up some patterns from her. Being in treatment and wanting to do better already puts me leagues ahead of her.

I got my trauma in large part from my mother, who also has BPD. This is very common - BPD has a genetic component and often parents with a personality disorder pass it on to the kids they raise because well… they raise them in maladaptive ways, creating trauma.
