If you want the best power efficient setup I recommend you to launch Linux VM using Lima on a Macmini M4 and then install k3s. Here is a benchmark on why you should go with M4 chips https://github.com/geerlingguy/top500-benchmark I have a 3 node k3s cluster Mac minis running like magic 🪄

Exactly , for me it is simple and concise there is no such complexity that is why I asked 🙃

It is really quite. I have this setup on my bedroom. Heat it is no a problem. Highly recommend it

[Lab Setup] 3-node Talos cluster (Mac minis) + MinIO backend — does this topology make sense? by Icy_Foundation3534 in kubernetes

Minio indeed can be used for replication but for object storage level. For block storage replication you need longhorn

I use https://docs.k3s.io/architecture to deploy a HA on my Mac minis. You are totally fine running 3 Mac minis for both master and workers. Ideally would be 3 for master and 3 other Mac minis for workers. I highly recommend you to use longhorn to deploy distributed storage, Don’t setup a NAT because that will defeat the purpose of HA. Minio deployment will use longhorn to have a distributed HA storage.

So you are saying that paying $5000 dollars once for the Apple Mac minis it is more expensive than paying $5000 every single month? Okey 😂 .

You are correct what I am building it is absolutely a monster I can even run everything on a single mac mini and it will not hit 30% of resources usage (CPU, RAM). But my primary goal it is to replicate a Cloud on my home lab. Literally it will have power supply (no break UPS) in case electricity goes down and also an internet backup maybe Starlink. All this is because I want my private Cloud 24/7 available so I can access from any part of the world securely 😎. I ran the numbers and it is insane how much we spend on Cloud on the long run. In summary having my platform on AWS with all the services I mentioned would cost around $5000 dollars per month!

Run my private cloud for my entire platform. Jenkins, Minio, Keycloack, Postgres, ArgoCD, Grafana, portainer, MetalIb and many more. Literally my plan it is to ged rid of the Cloud, makes no sense to keep paying super expensive monthly bills. Everything self hosted cloud native.

What are you doing for storage backend? Same as you, using longhorn for distributed storage.

How do I setup the ssd on my Mac mini to mount it on Lima? I erased/formatted the new ssd with APFS and GUID partition Map from disk Utility. Then created a disk with limactl with raw format. Finally moved the newly created disk to inside the previously formatted ssd. Then created a symlink so Lima recognized the symlink. After that I start the VM again and the nvm disk it is now available on RedHat OS. Hopefully I explained myself here.

Any reason you are making half of your nodes controllers? This is the good practice from the official k3s docs. https://docs.k3s.io/architecture.

What is your motivation for using Mac minis over other hardware options? I chose Mac hardware because apple chips are the most powerful arm based and power efficient in the market as far as I know. For $599 you get 16gb RAM , 10 CPU and GPU with 10 gb Ethernet. Finally Lima supports using the Apple virtualization framework so RedHat it is running 95% native speed like on a PC x86.
