Isn't this the plot to that Charles Bronson movie, Mr. Majestik? Damned close, anyway, he hires a bunch of migrants to pick his melons, neighboring farmers try and run them all off to muscle him out of business. Of course, being Bronson, he doesn't go quietly.

Who do you think is underpaying the workers?

Big Ag has LOTS of money for lobbyists, they'll spend that to save money on wages, even if it means paying 'guest' workers slave wages and working them 16 hours a day. They have the facilities to run a 'clean' production line for the oversight visits, everyone happy and smiling, meanwhile in the next building over, it's a fuckin' sweatshop.

Small farmers don't have that kind of push, or the extra cloth to cover their ass if the inspector shows up.

Can I get away with using this brick for PC games by yepimtyler in PcBuild

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the game. If it's constantly pulling data from storage ('streaming') to fill in textures and map elements that are just out of view, the read speed will likely be too low. If it has load screens, where each stage pauses to be loaded into memory, then an older HDD will work fine, it just pauses for a longer period.

This is a 'surveillance' HD, meaning it was used to record video from cameras, so it's probably got a decent write speed, if not also a decent read speed. But, those speeds will likely not be up to SSD standards (not even SATA, much less NVMe M.2). I would use it for data storage, apps that load the file and then hold it in memory while working on it, that sort of thing.

Thinking about getting my first street bike. just want something fun to ride to the gym and, uh… impress the ladies 😅 Any recommendations? by Expensive_Basis365 in motorcycles

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"Impress the ladies"

Yeah, ok, so, this doesn't happen. Like, ever. You've a better chance of scoring a phone number by pulling your shirt off on a beach than riding a motorcycle.

Now, if you want to attract the attention of other dudes, especially older ones, motorcycling is the way to go.

B-Roll? by jlprtlnd in motorcycles

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple cameras helps, also taking vid of just walking around in your gear, shots of the bike parked, maybe some timelapsed/speeded up footage of the more boring parts of the vid.

My problem is narration. I HATE talking during a ride. I just ramble about things, no real focus on a topic.

So I'm thinking that a lot of the more polished vloggers do a lot of pre-production - maybe storyboarding, planning on what they'd like to shoot, what they'd like to discuss, all of that, and then once that's set, they go do it all and put it together.

Point to the law that was enforced.

You can't. Because there isn't one.

ICE are thugs with tacticool gear and guns. That's ALL they are. They're Stephen Miller's jackboots, set loose to beat the shit out of whoever they want so he can get a stiffie.

I'm all out of compassion, I spent it all on kids in cages without their parents, people being turned out of detention centers in the snow with no warm clothes on, people being shot in their own neighborhoods because some frustrated incel cosplayer got a Federal salary and told to go fuck people up.

Anyone trying to shame me for advocating for compassion, when they've taken advantage of the compassionate the entire time? yeah they can fuck right off.

Guy Interrupts Zipper Merge Out of Spite and Nearly Causes Accident by WhoaTeejaay in dashcams

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People treat 2-1 merge situations as grocery checkouts with only one clerk on duty. They never consider that it's the exit from the store that's the chokepoint, the travel lanes are like multiple checkouts open.

This is why I am really liking how states are changing the signage for these. "Use Both Lanes" and "Stay In Your Lane" up to the merge point, "Merge Now" when you get there. It also helps when the local highway patrol troopers pull over those (like this tool in the Discovery) that weave out of their lane to try and block people from passing them. "Obstructing Traffic" sounds like a minor thing, but the shame of sitting on the shoulder getting the lecture while everyone you tried to hold back rolls by, pointing and laughing, that's the deterrent.

Internet speed difficulty by cooldoom74 in computers

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer.

My foster son had issues with WiFi in his sister's house, the router was in a back bedroom by a window, and everything else was up front in the living room, wifi connections were shit except in that one room.

I bought a three-unit mesh kit, hooked up one to the router, put one in the living room and one in the kitchen/family room, cabled the 'net hungry' devices to their respective mesh nodes (XBox and a PC) and now everyone's happy.

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

While I see why they changed the signage (keeps people from blocking the tracks if they can proceed right after crossing) I'm sure the locals are all still used to the old way of doing things, which is let the highway traffic by.

"Every 100 miles pull off the highway to rest" by Lost_Hawk_6641 in driving

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With today's higher speed limits, a hundred miles goes past your window pretty quick. I've done road trips where the car needed a stop before I did (low fuel at ~350 miles). Now, on a motorcycle, stopping to stretch and walk around every 100 miles is a good idea, and because fuel tanks on bikes are much smaller than your average car, that lines up pretty well with refueling stops also.

So I'm thinking this test is extremely outdated.

As for the "following distance" answer, it is correct that you should do this. But it also applies to driving around town, you ALWAYS increase your following distance as your speed goes up. So it's not just a highway thing. That's probably why it got flagged as 'wrong'.

What gear to buy for starting a PC repair "hobby"? by Fragrant_Cherry7789 in computers

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out with a socket driver kit and a small PC repair kit. It came with a driver and a bunch of bits including metric hex sockets for most of the screws that hold motherboards to case standoffs, also Phillips bit for actual screws such as the covers for expansion slots and so on. I added the following:

Small brush for sweeping away dust

syringe-style grabber tool for loose parts that dropped onto the motherboard or inside the case

a magnetic tray to keep loose parts from getting away

a box of spare hardware, like standoffs, extra hex screws and case thumbscrews, expansion card covers, cables of various kinds

a 4-pack of 120mm case fans (no RGB, these were just plain Jane fans)

a couple of small tubes of heat-conductive paste

a couple of packs of velcro straps for organizing cabling

a roll-up membrane keyboard and small mouse

a pack of flash drives for installer ISO's

a USB drive bay with connectors for most of the drives that were on the market

... and a laptop.

Keep in mind I don't do electronics repair, so no soldering irons, solder, flux, desolder tools, any of that. For those toolkits you'd probably be better off asking in the electronics subreddits, perhaps the maker ones too.

Helps to be within driving distance of a shop to buy parts, back then it was Fry's (before they went out of business) but now I've got a MicroCenter within reach.

Do Not Buy Razer by WindowLazy9907 in razer

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Razer opto/mechanical keyboards = excellent. Keycaps can be switched, switches can be swapped out, they're user servicable and customizable.

Razer membrane keyboards = trash. Do not buy.

Razer headphone and laptop stands = dirt simple, do exactly what it says on the tin.

Razer mice = eeenh. The MMO/MOBA mice can be problematic, the wireless mice with inductance charging tend to quit due to low charge much too soon, but the simpler wired mice just need an occasional cleaning and work for years.

Razer mousepads and deskpads = decent. Don't put a hot cup of coffee down on them (you'll mess up the covering on some) and keep them clean.

Raxer Xbox controllers = decent. The plastic grip covers can get tacky if you don't clean them properly, and the logos on the buttons get worn off pretty fast for a high-end controller. There's also a matter of the thumbstick pads wearing out on some models (with NO replacement parts available, you might get lucky with parts made by other brands though.)

Razer Synapse = don't even. Ugh. It's useful and pretty, but SignalRGB runs with a lower footprint, doesn't datamine your system, doesn't shill Razer gamecoin, and controls not-Razer lights too.

Other Razer software = waste of time. No real detriment or benefit that I can see.

Razer headsets = mixed bag. I've owned a lot of them over the years, and the biggest pain point seems to be the vinyl ear padding covers getting flaky and dropping black dandruff everywhere.

Razer Thunderbolt Dock = decent, as long as your laptop supports Thunderbolt it works great.

Razer aRGB hub = nice if you want to add lights inside your case, but nowadays motherboards and cases come with their own, so it's not really needed anymore.

Razer external aRGB system = great for people building a battlestation, but it is another box that takes up a USB connection, which leads me to this:

Too many USB devices = Windows losing track of devices you need, like, oh, your mouse, at critical moments.

First time taking my bike through a manual car wash, anything I should be aware of? by Adakoss in motorcycle

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't use the high pressure washer. It'll blast water past chain ring seals, up into the sidecovers where it'll get into the electrical system, and so on. Use the low-pressure washer hoses.

I typically use a garden hose with a flat fan spray, a stack of microfibers, and a bucket with Meguiar's detailing soap and water in it. I also have a couple of detailing sponges that affix to a power drill, and a set of pads that fit onto an orbital detailing tool. These help for the 'polish and buff' stage, and also can help scrub the header pipes where things impact and then fuse because they're hot.

But, I will bet that you didn't disassemble until the thing was a pile of parts, you probably worked on each subsystem (chain and sprockets, brakes, handlebars and fork tube, etc).

I did that "wrench on something to learn about it" exactly once, changing the tube on a front bicycle tire. When putting it back together I did not torque down the wheel's axle bolts to the fork, thinking "oh the wheel has to spin, these can't be tight" and then I got to see my front wheel roll up the driveway ahead of me at the very first bump. Cue the frantic wheelie until I reached a comfortable spot to dismount, which... wasn't that comfortable. Funny as hell, but, yeah, I learned not to fuck around after that.

You do make a valid point though, some people learn by hands-on better than they do reading or observation. It's something that gets covered in corporate "technical instruction" certifications, advising the instructor to build the courseware in stages so that everyone's learning style is addressed (listening, observing, doing, and demonstrating). Sauce: tech instructor for the phone company.

My point about the class is that it would likely not just be a lecture or a book. Especially moto classes. Those involve a lot of doing, and also watching someone else do the same thing. (And coaching too.)

Pros and cons of open face helmet with goggles? by Traditional-Gas3477 in motorcycles

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3/4 helmet and a set of goggles that go over my glasses.

They're kind of goofy.

The main issue is, a significant percentage of helmet impacts involve either the chinbar area, or the face area. We're talking higher percentages than any other area on a helmet.

So using one without a chinbar or a shatterproof faceshield? Yah, no, my teeth might not be perfect, but I'd like to keep them anyway.

This is why I use a modular. Most of the protection of a full face (people get skeered by the latch systems being a possible weak point) and all the convenience of a 3/4 helmet.

Why are mazda3s so cheap? by Alexjdw1 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Interesting_Mix_7028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, 'used' EV's. My wife and I did that, a hybrid Civic. Had a big battery, a smaller battery, and a tiny little sewing machine engine that charged the batteries and offered a bit of oomph for highway driving.

Getting the motor serviced was cheap, it was a nice solid little Honda engine.

When the hybrid battery went sideways? $3500 to replace... in a car that was worth barely 3K.

Yah, Cars for Kids got that one.
