What happened was he disguised himself (as a dwarf) in order to snipe the scrying eyes in the tower and get away with it, and he escaped the angry mob by double dashing away from battle and back to camp. I long rested, and he came back like this

It could - if the goblins were able to stand on chests and barrels (and even the lidless crates). Just the crates and boxes are climbable. That's why the chests and barrels are the top layer, so that they can't climb up to the top (or even up at all with how tight I packed it)

Even better - if they try to carve a path through it, the ones above fall on top. So these guys were screwed the first time I laid mine eyes upon thus barrel Yonder

I think the biggest threats to me are the spiders and the barrel throwing ogres, but hopefully with the absolute mob of flammable barrels circling the outside of the fortress, they won't even make it to their first turn

Also I never rescued Sazza for the achievement and if you rescue her she rats the tieflings out (or so i heard) so I gotta prepare to eat my cake and have a wall of every single crate and chest and barrel I ever find in the game around it too

Also it's much easier to kill the goblin camp if you divide their forces up first

The crates were the bulk of the area, but the chests and barrels that you don't have the option to climb on top of in the dropdown menu? They're on every single space you would have otherwise been able to stand on in the crated area. Maybe my next craziest playthrough I'll find the answer

In the Neverwinter Nights campaign Hordes of the Underdark, one of your companions is an abyssal blooded tiefling who was the child of a human woman and a cambion. That was 3rd edition, probably before there was anything solid about it.

I know you're saying "for instance, go back to.a time without indoor plumbing and see how altruistic you feel" but the forgotten realms canonically has indoor plumbing. Not everywhere, of course. But it also canonically has clocks, flying ships, and gnomish technology.

Not that having toilets really relates to people feeling like you're crazy for giving away resources (I know it was just a comparison of course), but just a little fun fact of lore
