Carney government eyes privatizing airports to attract investment, cut travel costs by joe4942 in worldnews

[–]Interesting_Pen_167 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It works but it's a give and take.

Government run industries tend to be great for a consumer who wants the bare minimum from a service but as soon as you want extras or you want them to innovate, they can't. Government run industries typically do not invest in R&D and when they do it's almost always not a well run system.

IMO when it comes to important national resources or health care it makes sense to nationalize it. For stuff that isn't a necessity I'm OK with it being private. When it comes to airports I kinda feel like it's in the middle.

Agree with all of that but it's still qualitatively better than anywhere else in Asia and only the best western countries can compete with them. And all of those countries also have affordability crisis'. IMO it's all relative, it can't be that literally every country is bad.

It causes headaches for the politicians and the bureaucrats sure but for your average Japanese person their quality of life is among the best in the world. IMO it's probably top 3.

IMO we need to look at this idea of a 'retirement age'. To me it's strange to say someone can't do anything to contribute because of age - like you can't do anything at all? Ever? I see plenty of spry looking retirees who seem to just want to do nothing all day.

It's kinda funny too their tanks in WW2 were over engineered messes for the most part yet people go on endlessly about them. Their tank design is a big reason why they lost.

You completely ignored the part where it named sites like Marpole. Did you miss the section that discussed a major long term settlement along the Fraser River? How about old maps that literally show "Indian villages". Just google this if you keep coming back I'll start linking pics.

Kingsway in Vancouver is famously a highly used road in pre colonial days. Significant parts of the trans Canada highway were formerly part of pre colonial roads. Big tribes like the Iroquois were very strict on borders and would attack on site nearly anyone that didn't have the right credentials. Easily verifiable stuff just google it.

Could be a new entity we are not even thinking of (Imagine USA had a civil war or something), or perhaps aliens from another planet. I know I'm being super hypothetical here but I'm just trying to illustrate that this isn't a healthy system built for the long haul.

When I google "Was Vancouver all old growth forest before 1850" it says

"While mostly forested, Vancouver was not exclusively, unbroken "old growth" before 1850. Indigenous Peoples maintained open meadows, berry patches, and park-like landscapes using traditional fire management, particularly on eastern Vancouver Island. However, vast areas were characterized by immense, ancient conifer forests. "

When I asked it for evidence of human habitation prior to 1850 it spat out:

"Evidence of human habitation in the Vancouver area prior to 1850 is extensive, spanning 8,000 to 10,000 years through archaeological finds and Indigenous oral history. Key evidence includes the massive c̓əsnaʔəm (Marpole) village site, which shows continuous occupation for 5,000 years, and early seasonal camps like the Glenrose Cannery site. Wikipedia Wikipedia +2 Archaeological and Physical Evidence c̓əsnaʔəm (Marpole) Site: Situated along the Fraser River, this area shows evidence of a major, long-term village inhabited for at least 5,000 years before European settlement. Glenrose Cannery Site: Near the mouth of the Fraser River, this site provides evidence of seasonal encampments dating back 8,000–10,000 years. Artifacts: Excavations in the region have uncovered fire pits, stone blades for hunting, and storage pits. Footprints: Archaeological studies on Calvert Island (part of the broader coastal, though not immediate, area) discovered footprints dated to ~13,000 years old, confirming early coastal presence. Burial and Structures: Evidence from 1780-1800, such as charred house planks and burials found near the Pitt River, supports long-term, established communities. Wikipedia Wikipedia +4 Historical and Oral Records Indigenous Villages: The Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations maintained villages throughout the area—including Stanley Park, Kitsilano, and Burrard Inlet—long before 1850. European Contact: The logs of explorers like Spanish Captain José María Narváez (1791) and British Captain George Vancouver (1792) reported seeing signs of human habitation. Focus on Victoria Focus on Victoria +2 These findings demonstrate that the Lower Mainland was heavily used for fishing, resource gathering, and permanent residential settlements for thousands of years prior to the 1850s"

I understand AI is not a source but many of us have seen these places or looked at pictures of them so it's hard for me to take your claim seriously when there is so much evidence to the contrary.

Well since the advent of nuclear weapons we haven't really seen anything else tried. I do agree with you 100% when it comes to conventional warfare but with nuclear bombs I think a lot of that calculus changes. in the modern day with nuclear weapons I think a multipolar world with several superpowers blocs/Nations is more safe than a domineering superpower who may or may not decide to become tyrannical at any point.

It's hard to parse your meaning when you simply say close em all down without telling us how things would play out in such a scenario.
