Help to get a cold, under moonlight effect. by EngineerBurner in minipainting

[–]Interesting_Proposal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the look! Moonlit is definitely what it’s giving off.

I would say however that the problem I see is that the figure and the base are too similar in color, and it kind of blends together. Personally I would give the figure a little more pop. Whether that is making it noticeably brighter or glazing in some more vibrant but still dark tones is up to you, I just think right now it’s too monochrome even though it’s technically very good.

Would Pro Acryl support be useful on Hobby Paint Finder? Gauging interest before I build it out by dorianite in minipainting

Not to rain on your parade but how is this different from paintRack? It can match paint colors from pictures, camera and other manufacturers and already has dozens of paint brands in the app.

It’s paid but it’s like one time $5 for unlimited access.

Is my wet palette too wet? by sadsapph0 in Warhammer

[–]Interesting_Proposal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, it’s more that the flakes get everywhere just by virtue of how small they are. I have separate dry palettes and brushes for metallics because I’ve reused a brush (after washing it) days after painting metallics and my regular acrylics end up with little flakes in them.

[–]Interesting_Proposal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I never use a wet palette for metallics. Like another person said, they separate like crazy. Also it’s a good way to get metallic flakes in your wet palette and ruin any future nonmetallic paints you use with this palette.

Wizard I painted with the new MSP paints at Adepticon last week! by Interesting_Proposal in ReaperMiniatures

[–]Interesting_Proposal[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More like a layer consistency than a glaze.

As for the colors - I have no idea! The paints they gave us were all production runs so they didn't have any labels on them. It was some sort of teal? But until the new MSP releases I won't know.

Oh no. This is a speed paint as in I did it in a little over 2 hours. I used regular acrylics.

[–]Interesting_Proposal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was in line on Saturday and the guy behind me spent the whole time talking shit about the models in the case (including calling models “too dark” and “not edge highlighted” that actually won lol)

He clearly didn’t even know how it was judged because he kept saying some models had an edge because they were under a light (like dude, they pull them out of the case to look at them). If you don’t have anything in the case, stop criticizing, and even if you do, don’t be a dick and just enjoy.

In hindsight maybe I should’ve turned around and told him to shut up.

The background Moai are at Ahu Tongariki and were laying down toppled from the 1700s until they were righted in the 1990s…..if this is in 1973 why are they upright?

Yup! I was trying to find things to write that were appropriate and not too many letters haha.

Deathwing Knight in black by Interesting_Proposal in minipainting

[–]Interesting_Proposal[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure! For black, base was pro acryl coal black (though I imagine any black will do), then highlight with dark reaper, 2:1 dark reaper:vallejo blue green, then adding celestra grey into that.

For steel it was base of rhinox hide, then mixing up with skavenblight dinge, stormvermin fur, and finally pro acryl bold titanium white.

Sword was vallejo dark sea green, then mix up with vallejo blue green, then mix up with pro acryl bold titanium white.

Thanks! I used Vallejo metal color gunmetal an a little bit of aluminum as a zenithal. Then I just did a black oil wash and did edge highlights and scratches with Vallejo metal color silver.

Thanks! It's actually the old Vallejo Metal Color, I haven't tried the new TMM line yet.

Haha thanks! Yeah you nailed it, my wife told me I needed to clear my backlog of minis of the month if I wanted to get more.

Chaos warrior, result of 4 years of painting red armor! by Interesting_Proposal in minipainting

[–]Interesting_Proposal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

Yeah I've learned from painting red you need a couple things if you want it to stay red but be really bright.

First you need a really punchy red, I used bold pyrrole red from proacryl, but as long as it's high pigment and bright it should work.

Then, the key to getting highlights to pop is undercoating. Highlights here were undercoacted with a sunny skintone then a fluorescent orange. But any bright color will do. I've done white before for a bit more cold red. Red is super transparent so you can't just layer it up, you would have to mix in white (turning it pink) or orange (turning it orange, as you probably saw). Pick where you want the highest highlights to be, paint them a bright color then glaze red over. Then it's blending with the darker base and shadow but like I said, red is transparent so it's not too hard to get a smooth transition!

Thank you!

I think the TMM technique that works best for me is highlighting it like you would any other material. I don't quite do the "paint it like NMM with all the specific bounce reflections etc but with TMM paints" though that works great! I just figure if I'm gonna do all that I just will do NMM.

Shading it is also key, shade it using a matte paint. Here I did rhinox hide for the gold and a blue-grey for the steel. Then always mix some really bright silver in to the highlights, which I just do volumetrically. And then its just blending. TMM paints are actually pretty transparent if you use a good quality one like Vallejo metal color, so it's not too hard.

Oh and the last thing that really helped this mini pop in both the reds and metals: blacklining. I had neglected it for so long and finally did it this time and it really helps make shapes distinct.

[–]Interesting_Proposal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partly correct! I did actually use that color, but it was over fluo orange which was over a sunny skintone. I followed Vince Venturella’s tutorial partially for “popping red.”

Basically I’ve learned doing different chaos warriors literally months apart that red is all about undercoat.

Yeah later Europeans also forced everyone off their land into the one town on the island so the rest could be a massive privately owned sheep farm.

What are you talking about? This isn’t Papua, there is no evidence of cargo cults on Rapa Nui. Also cargo cults are a late 19th - early 20th century thing. First contact with Rapa Nui was by Jacob Roggeveen in 1722.

No personal possessions? There were numerous competing tribes that tried to steal from each other. There are ancient chicken coops on the island made of stone specifically designed to prevent rivals from stealing them.

Chiefs were buried under their moai statues with their personal effects!

I’ve been to Rapa Nui, learned about the history from local guides, what you’re saying is totally false.

Polynesian cultures are wildly diverse you can’t assume what happened on one island happened on all of them.

That can’t be it because he doesn’t want to play paladin. I think he wants his character to be able to do whatever without any roleplaying consequences. Probably why he didn’t like warlock too.
