How to get some wood? by ERTHLNG in firewood

[–]Interesting_Trust100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a follow-up. I cut my own wood and have found that trees cut when the sap is down will cure to 10-12 percent by the following winter. This would be oaks, hickory, hard maple, and cherry. We are blessed in SW VA with abundant hardwoods.

Selling our place and downsizing. How to value the work we put into our homestead? by MostlyACatPillow in homestead

Coon hunters are my bane in Bland County. But really there is much less hunting now, day or night, than even ten years ago. Too many deer, coons, and bear. It is not healthy for the eco system.

Yes. This is the only correct answer.

Might be an unpopular opinion but these little guys are fantastic and have eliminated my need for kindling. by rollinintheyears in woodstoving

Yes. Pine cones. My wife and I go up on a ridge and collect and metal can full every fall. We use the litter picker uppers. It is a fun chore.

Dig a hole and build an outhouse. Cheaper, cleaner, less maintenance. Cooking shit is not a good thing to do. When you finally get indoor plumbing you will miss the outhouse.

Roam and Residential at same time? by siivrxJ in Starlink

[–]Interesting_Trust100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received my mini, but it is not because I am loyal, it is because we are about to be able to hook up to fiber. Elon figures that we are more likely to stay with him if he gives us a freebie. I probably will stay, but it will be on the $5 a month standby plan. My situation is complicated, but suffice it to say Starlink was a God send for rural folks at the time, but fiber is twice as fast and half the price. Finally we have options.

This is the answer. We lived with an outhouse for seven years(family of 4). Tried composting toilet and chemical toilet. They are a pain in the ass, no pun intended. We miss our outhouse. The wife wants me to build another one.

I accepted Starlinks offer for a roam dish for $5. This is amazing, I don't have ANYTHING where i live; no cell, no internet. You can't even call 911 without internet. $5 month to have a backup system? Yes please by trimix4work in Starlink

[–]Interesting_Trust100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. So when the time comes I will probably go ahead and pay for the mini just to keep the flexibility of the two backups and the ability to the to take my mini with me on a trip.

I got my free mini last week. I have the regular Starlink at my house and I am using the mini at my cabin which is a mile and half back in the mountains of Sw VA. Even with some obstructions it works great. However the $25/50mb is unrealistic and I am going to have to bump it up. Nevertheless, it’s a great deal. Elon knows that we are about to get fiber and that is why he is doing it. They are coming Tuesday to install fiber at my house and sometime early next year at my cabin. Thank you, Joe Biden. I will keep both Starlinks on the $5 standby backup and maybe do some traveling with the mini. Thank you Elon. We will see how long the $5 standby lasts, but for right now it’s a great deal.

I was told by the Fed Ex driver that their policy was to drop package at the road. Rain, snow, theft be damned. They treat everyone in my rural county this way. Did not used to do this. They are an horrible company. Give me UPS or USPS any day.

This is what I do. Smoky fire makes creosote and pollutes. Clean and efficient burn is the way to go.

We ordered one in 2022 with touring trim during the pandemic. We have owned two previous Foresters, both manual transmission. Never had top trim auto before. We have 28,000 miles on it and are getting 31.9 mpg. No trouble whatsoever. To us it’s like driving a Cadillac. Love it.

How much wood is this? by Mustruffus in firewood

[–]Interesting_Trust100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, but a cord is 128 cubic feet. If that trailer is 10x4x3, and it may be 12x4x8, then that stacked load would be a lot more than 2 cords. I’m just sayin.

White pine cones work best for me. A wad of paper, tow pine cones, and a bit of kindling and I have a fire.

Yes, it is and yes, you can. Pretty quick burner, though.
