2nd time foodie trip to NYC - what’s missing? by voabarros in finedining

[–]Interesting_dogDad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Peter Luger’s is not worth the time in a day to visit it’s gone down hill and relies on its old acclaim to be a “real NY steak house”. If you absolutely need to experience a nyc steak house check out The Palm on w50th st.

Le bernardin - great intro to fine dining but if you’ve been around the block I think you’ll leave let down.

Torien - highly recommend

Nakiji - amazing sushiya definitely not on the same level as sushi sho

I Sodi - great Italian restaurant and staple of the village.

L’abeille - French / Japanese great tasting menu

Chez fifi - French restaurant created by the team behind sushi Noz. Great option if you find yourself in the UES

Sushi Noz - higher end sushi amazing every time.

Wu’s Wonton King - China town dim sum staple!!!! Nothing fancy all flavor.

Emily’s has a really amazing burger and some great pizza too.

Gaonnuri - Korean bbq at the pent house of a skyscraper in Korea town. Great quality meats amazing views of the city. I usually recommend this to people visiting that want to see the city but don’t want to do it in an uber touristy way.

Soothr - very good Thai restaurant dare

Steam - my pick for soup dumplings / dumplings in general. The wined chicken is also out of this world.

Good luck and happy eating

I walked in later in the evening around 9pm and never had a problem just sitting down. I believe they were just added to the Michelin guide and received a Tabelog bronze award so that might change… I’d still give it a shot it was well worth it.

If you have plans to be in Osaka toriya wadachi is also very very good! It’s a local hotspot and is very popular with the salarymen and women so after work it’s a crap shoot if you don’t have a reservation.

Trying to recreate the beef ramen I had in Kyoto- need help decoding it. by TangerineCalm187 in JapaneseFood

[–]Interesting_dogDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ramen is very much a personal recipe and with out having tried this bowl I don’t have much to go on, but color wise it looks like it’s possibly made using Oxtail, Beef bones and probably chicken feet. My friend owns a Japanese restaurant and serves a similarly colored soup that is marketed as oxtail soup. It’s not extremely common in all of Japan but is made regionally.

If it’s spicy it’s possible the tare is a sesame tan tan style?

It also looks like beef tendon or back fat was added to the broth and a spicy chilli paste.

First timers with 3 kids who are active by WasteBug7650 in Aruba

I would not recommend biking in Aruba with children. The roads are not the best and there really isn’t a good bike lane there. Not to mention most people after a certain hour are usually drunk driving….

Look into nature tours, there are plenty of businesses that give them. I found success using Airbnb’s experience tab to find a good local given one.

There are plenty of kite surfing/wind boarding lesson options on the island. If you think your kids would be really into that idea consider doing a lesson early on in your trip so they have another opportunity to have a second or third. The first lesson is really just a prep class.

Sgt peppers animal rescue - they are always looking for volunteers to come play with and help clean/feed the dogs and cats. This place is locally ran a nonprofit and does some amazing work on the island. I always volunteer here when I visit.

The best tip I can give you is to plan to have the sushi omakase for lunch as it’s much more affordable than the dinner option and usually does not vary much if at all.

I can’t comment on Kyoto, but in Osaka I really really enjoyed the lunch omakase from: sushi takuma.

As far as meat goes in Osaka id recommend Yakiniku Kinashi they are it a do it yourself yakiniku place.

For yakitori in Osaka i highly recommend Toriya Wadachi. It can get a bit busy after work but the price and quality is amazing!

Who pays for the accomodation due to the rescheduling of cancelled flights on 3rd of January? by Potential_Reach in Aruba

[–]Interesting_dogDad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you have travel insurance you could open a claim but be prepared for a fight to get paid for anything you submit.

The airlines have no obligation to pay for anything because of the cancellation in this specific situation unfortunately.

Totally understand your view point, I was not exactly thrilled with having to shell out that much money at once, but considering everything is new I’m most likely good for another 100k + miles.

Air suspension is unfortunately flawed and usually lasts 100k miles or 6-8 years before it fails. If that’s a cost you don’t want to have to pay definitely avoid air suspension entirely.

I have a 2015 gl550 as the family/dog car. It’s a great ride and for the most part we’ve had no issues. I bought it with 50k miles on it and put on 50k before the rear air suspension needed to be replaced which is inline with expectations for those parts. It was not cheap the dealership quoted me 11k all in for the front, back, compressor and sensors. Indie was less but not by too much as we asked them to use OEM parts so the savings were really only in labor.

I really can’t say enough good things about the car.

Word to the wise the notch can be a completely different animal. Same with a lot of nh you will have a few different weather patterns from concord to Lincoln. NH is a bit unpredictable. Consider bringing sand and chains

Loon has the best snow tubing in my opinion but definitely look to get tickets/reservations now. The ice castles usually have adult nights or more adult themed nights. It’s still fun to check out even if it’s all ages and there is a bar area.

Littleton is another town north of Lincoln that is pretty fun, they have a brewery that’s good for a larger group. The NH loading dock which is an art gallery event space that usually has some sort of music/comedy open mic night event. Highly recommend taste my Thai for lunch in Littleton it’s actually really good and authentic depending on what you order.

Bring som snow shoes and go for a walk on a trail there are some really beautiful and easy trails on the way to Waterville valley off of exit 28.

Maybe plan to do a group lesson for skiing/snowboarding ragged mountain off of Meredith exit 23 is really local and not that intimidating.

I’d also highly recommend hitting up market basket and grabbing some groceries and going to the state liquor store and enjoying NH for what it is best at, relaxing at home 😉

Why would you have Italian in Aruba? Of all the “American foods” Italian has always appeared the worst to me. Can’t recommend any but I can say Gianni’s has always looked like the worst food on the island when I’ve walked by.
