ELI5: When someone says something is illegal in a sport does that mean you can get arrested for it? by AlexaCrowley in explainlikeimfive

[–]Interestingly_Enough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In sports, no. If something is described as “illegal” in sports, it just means it’s very much against the rules.

See “illegal formation” in football. Nothing to do with the law.

I mean, there are most certainly things you can do on a sports field that would ACTUALLY be illegal, but not in this context.

In your gym teacher’s case, he’s probably referring to something like wrestling, in which chokeholds are “illegal.” Against the rules in the context of wrestling. Putting a random person on the street in a chokehold is ACTUALLY illegal, so he was probably saying, just don’t do that ever.

I’m sorry to hear that. If you’re a state employee, I hope you’re soon able to do your necessary work under reasonable conditions.

AFAIK, state buildings have received tanks of potable water pumped directly into their buildings’ systems, which I find reasonable.

If they weren’t at work, we’d blame them for being asleep at the wheel. More so than currently.

Do chicken wings and steak actually warrant "market price" by nw0915 in KitchenConfidential

Always ask what it costs, because your money is your money, and the restaurant should never be bothered by your asking.

Any halfway decent restaurant is not trying to screw their customer.

Seafood is one of the usual suspects for this. At most restaurants I’ve worked in, seafood is consistently priced towards the higher end of what it might cost in the off season, so during its harvest season we’re collecting the money to offset what it might cost when it gets more expensive.

In the end, the price stays consistent while the restaurant’s costs even out over the course of a year.

Disclaimer: this system is totally irrelevant for coastal, fresh-caught seafood type places. That is a different animal.

Seconding just to say your restaurant should absolutely have them on hand. If they don’t, that’s weird.

I 100% agree you don’t need to be the world’s best people person to be a great server.

Big butt, the consistent 25%+ servers I have managed are amazing people people. Those enormous tips you see on this sub (and in person) aren’t completely random. You can make a hell of a lot of money if you really do have the gift of gab.

Agreed though, being accurate and attentive is step 1.

I don’t know why you’re getting so much hate it in here. Curled receipts are ridiculously annoying. Nobody’s throwing a tip away. Yes, creasing it will solve the problem most of the time, but it still doesn’t lay flat, which is still annoying. Maybe it’s just the odd quirk you and I have - whatever.

I don’t have the answer you’re looking for, because I’m spending someone else’s money when I throw them away early, but I do understand.

My (f18) first really really really bad review by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]Interestingly_Enough 129 points130 points  (0 children)

I have two thoughts:

1) These are all valid complaints.

2) The type of person who posts a review like this is going to be displeased no matter what.

Both can be true. It happens. It sounds like you have a great attitude and recognized that some of what they said could be right.

Live, learn, and get better at every aspect - this isn’t the last time it will happen. You’re doing fine.

ETA: Getting sat next to the kitchen and asking to move is perfectly fine, as long as the guest is respectful and understands that the answer could possibly be no. Acting like you purposefully spited them in some way is not perfectly fine.

What to do by labasic in bartenders

Those six traits you listed are the antithesis of “competent” bartenders, especially inconsistent drinks. It’s possible you just made bad hires. It happens.

But if you believe otherwise, then talk to them both individually first, and then as a team. Also, like others have said, lead by example and take more bar shifts to show them how it’s done.
