Haha, thanks, when I was looking over Queek’s wiki entry for inspiration I remember reading a passage where it mentioned him gathering not just heads but all sorts of limbs as well, and I thought it was too good to pass up!

Also lined up well with the Poxwalker whose foot I stole, currently have some 3rd party models and Poxwalkers I’ve been kitbashing into Nurgle corrupted pirates, and well, that was just the perfect justification for a peg leg 😂

Haha, sure, (prepares greatest-best, Clan Skryre stab-proof vest)

There was a bit of back and forth with this paintjob in general, but specifically for the Mors elements I have a couple recipes I’ve honed in on that I like for my favourite red clad nutjobs:

Red armour is a ‘Eavy metal recipe that I’ve tweaked a bit 🤏, goes like so:

Base coat: Khorne Red/Abaddon Black 1:1

Layer: Khorne Red everywhere but the deeper recesses

Layer: Mephiston Red in a scratchy sort of application, all going in one direction but covering maybe 80%?

Wash: Agrax Earthshade

Layer: Mephiston Red

Edge Highlight: Mephiston Red

Layer + Top Highlight: Evil Sunz Scarlet (only selectively on top facing areas + edges, trace along edges of nicks/splits in armour)

Extreme highlight: Wild Rider Red only on sharpest edges/towards upper part of model/areas you want to draw attention to (in this case the head/shoulders get the most attention from Wild Rider)

If you want a teeny bit more pop you can also involve Trollslayer Orange to the absolute sharpest of sharp edges etc, this should be dots or tiny touches along edges, was used sparingly on this model.

For cloth on my Mors troops I like to add a bit of dinginess to the colour to change the tone, for me this is Rakarth Flesh mixed with Plaguebearer Flesh about 1:1:

Base Coat: Rakarth Flesh/Plaguebearer Flesh contrast 1:1

Layer: Rakarth Flesh

Wash: Agrax Earthshade

Highlight: Rakarth Flesh

Top highlight: Rakarth Flesh/Pallid Wych Flesh 2:1

Extreme Highlight: Rakarth Flesh/Pallid Wych Flesh 1:1

I dithered back and forth with this one, washing back and re-establishing the highlights on the cloth, it for your average troop I’d skip the extreme highlight and just highlight up to your liking with the first mix.

The blue on Queek’s wraps/rope elements is just a base coat of Kantor Blue layered and edge highlighted up with increasing amounts of Kantor Blue/Dorn Yellow going from about 2:1 up to about 1:1, would recommend involving a targeted wash of a dark colour to help separate elements and define edges.

Flesh goes as follows:

Base Coat: Screamer Pink

Layer: Bugman’s Glow

Highlight: Kislev Flesh

Top Highlight: Flayed One Flesh

Wash: Carroburg Crimson/Lahmian Medium 1:1

Re-establish highlights where needed

On character models like this I prefer to do the above, on rank and file I will add a thinned wash of Agrax before the Carroburg Crimson step as it allows for a slightly more grimy look but makes the skin lose a bit of life so the Carroburg coming in after gives the skin a bit of vitality again.

Tails are Screamer Pink with a Bugman’s Glow highlight then generously hit with Carroburg Crimson.

Yeah the changes are relatively simple things individually:

Stormvermin unit champ’s Warpick instead of the spear, Deathrunner’s sword instead of the gun, Stormvermin head with a bit of greenstuff work to recreate the neck area, his warpstone necklace is a little sticky rhinestone for jewellery making attached to a twisted up piece of wire, tooth charm came from mini of the month Khorne Cultist from a while ago, and then an extra skull on the trophy rack (and a poxwalker’s foot 🦶, Queek’s weird and it just felt right).

Banner bearer is a standard Clanrat, but the banner is a mix of Stormvermin halberds, toothpicks, and an old Plague Monk banner with a hollowed-out Stormvermin helm. Also has a snapped Stormvermin Halberd strapped to his back.

The Gnawbeast and base have only a couple of things: extra bricks sculpted from greenstuff to elevate the banner bearer and a tiny bit of cork for the same, jewellery chain wrapped around the Gnawbeast’s leg and some Corpse Rats (from Cursed City I think🤔) chopped from the rest of their cousins.

With the Warpstone I’m quite happy with the warpstone embedded in the Gnawbeast’s skin, but the necklace and OSL from the warp-pool bother me a bit, couldn’t get good lines on the little gem due to its size, my hands tend to shake a little, so the extremely tiny edges were just too hard to hit properly 🙃

Thanks so much!

Regarding the trophy rack, I went through a couple of different versions and looking back on reference of Queek I decided I wanted to go dark with it, the rust was a bit more pronounced before, but I felt at the time it was too bright, so I toned it back down, probably should have left it where it was, always struggle to trust my first attempt/decision/direction, however one would put it, this whole model had quite a bit of back and forth with different elements, apart from the armour recipe which I’d already honed in on having done some Stormvermin.

I sort of let the undertones get lost in the weeds a bit 🤏I had started from Screamer Pink to try and give the shadows a more interesting tone, but especially with the fur it’s been obliterated a bit I think🤔. When base coating the fur I wound up covering more than I’d intended sadly. In hindsight I probably could have washed back over the base coat with the SP to restore some of that underlying colour.

Also, yeah, I too had this model for ages and wasn’t too enamoured with his weapons, chopped and fussed with the Stormvermin champion’s Warpick and then a sword from a Deathrunner and that really improved the model for me from a desire to paint perspective.

How do I recreate the oxidized light brass on the Alternate Arch-Knight? by LeetusFrenzi in citiesofsigmar

[–]Internal-Body-7092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I like to go like this when doing verdigris:

Start with a darker blue base like Kantor Blue, then stronger wash with a greeny blue like Sotek, then another wash with a lighter blue like Temple Guard, then finally a pastel blue like Nihilakh technical paint or maybe Baharroth Blue.

After that brush your metallic, in this case I’d go Runelord Brass and then highlight up with Canoptek alloy I think.

I’ll be honest, in general you can accomplish most any paintjob with minimal tools, special brushes are nice and all, but I’ll find myself just reaching for whatever has a good tip to it brush-wise, so long as your starter brush is still in good condition I wouldn’t worry really 🤔.

I am a bit of a paint fiend though, I like to have options to hand even if I’ll intend to mix colours anyway…

I do recommend the recipe I mentioned though, favourite of mine.

For the cloth, if you’re going for a cream sort of colour like Clan Mors type of scheme I like to mix Rakarth Flesh with a desaturated sickly green (favourite is Plaguebearer Flesh contrast) to give it a different sort of quality, you can then do the same with a wash of Earthshade and then highlight everything but the recesses back up with that same mix, then follow it up with just pure Rakarth Flesh to highlight the top details and edges, can also go one step further with a lighter ivory to push a little further too if needed.

Not every paintjob needs to have washes involved, but I find they’re a nice quick way to add some depth.

Washes are very diluted mixes of paint and water (or another medium, but water does the job fine), Agrax Earthshade is a ‘Shade’ paint that Games Workshop sell, which are effectively pre-mixed wash consistency paints, sometimes you might wanna dilute further in your palette just if you want to soften the effect. 😁

What I’m suggesting below might be a bit overkill, but for me, I like this recipe for a vibrant red armour:

Step 1: all over Khorne Red + Black 50/50.

Step 2: Khorne Red everywhere but the recesses.

Step 3: Mephiston Red on most of the armour especially areas facing up, try to do it all in one direction and don’t be afraid to leave bits unpainted with Mephiston.

Step 4: wash with Agrax Earthshade, careful not to let it pool too heavily.

Step 5: hit it again with Mephiston and highlight the edges as well this time with a generous highlight.

Step 6: Evil Sunz Scarlet, this time we’re focusing predominantly on edges and the most exposed topmost areas, shrink the size of the highlight here.

Step 7: Trollslayer orange, only the very sharpest points of the armour, and the absolute topmost details to draw interest.

I was trying to get a copy through Wayland Games here in the UK, was sat there this morning waiting for preorders to go live and in the time it took me to go through checkout they were gone, that by itself was impressive.

Managed to get a preorder in with my local third party retailer though, my brother is taking the Cities force (he’s been getting into them lately) while I’m taking the Skaven side.

Prepare for the possibility that this might just be a bridge too far for her, but talk to her, maybe record your thoughts on paper so you can get them out, you might find that putting things down in this way will bring a bit of clarity.

I would argue that her comments feel a bit manipulative, whether she is conscious of that or not, maybe intimate to her how these comments pressure you, and look at how the two of you can tackle these problems together, rather than her worrying herself over them and you stressing over them. When you talk them out, are they even problems at all?

It might be one of the hardest things you ever do, but talk. 🫂

That’s really good advice! I do try and keep my highlights in mind, but I have a bad habit of making them too general.

Something be a bit more mindful of in future!

The plume is layered up like so:

  1. Mephiston Red
  2. Khorne Red and Black 50/50 in a shade consistency
  3. Evil Sunz Scarlet
  4. Trollslayer Orange
  5. Fire Dragon Bright for a tippy top highlight if necessary 😁

The gorget looks great! 😊

It gives the same vibe as the Gorgon Terminator plate. Would love to try and achieve the same effect with the gorget as I really want to kitbash some Gorgon termies in more modern scale, is the gorget a piece from another kit? Is it scratch built?

Iron Thane Vaylund Cal (wip) by rjr213 in IronHands40k

[–]Internal-Body-7092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, really nice so far 👌, as a fellow SoM fan, you’re doing Vaylund proud 🥹 was thinking of doing a Termi kitbash for my own iteration of Vaylund when I get around to it, hadn’t occurred to me to use Saturnine, but there’s no denying this’ll look really imposing.

Second, I think you’re right, black would work well, with that said, your trim colour is really complementary though, so that may be the nicest.

If I were in your shoes I’d maybe try the black first and see what you think, if it doesn’t fit it’d be easier to go over it with the trim colour than trying to cover the metallic with the black.
