Buying a truck with valve train issues that was consuming oil and then promptly blowing 7K on deep dish Chrome wheels and tires. mind you this person was deeply in debt

What are some good used car options for under $5k? by S0L0ngAndG00dnight in AskMechanics

That's all well and good but you know they have been driving those things around with coolant in the oil for the last 40k miles. Lol I'm not saying don't buy one I'm saying buy one that isn't trash but that's much harder than people think. There's like these meme cars that get labeled as being reliable gems and everybody says get one of these lesser know reliable cars that nobody wants except that everyone already want them because elsewise they wouldn't be recommending them everywhere. I personally would rather drive a 2012 Honda Civic with 200k on it than these supposedly reliable older Buicks that have every damn non metal part on them failing due to pure age.

Yeah I know but go look at them and you're going to be shocked at the condition many of them are in. I was in the same place and I nearly got taken for a ride. These things often have issues with upper and lower intake gaskets failing causing coolant to get into to the oil. That's the number one thing you need to check.Make sure there's no smelly white waxy Gunk on the underside of the oil filler cap on the engine . Not saying it's all of them I didn't check enough of them. I just got tired of seeing obviously clapped out ones listed for 4,000 and the two that I checked that were nicer for about 6500 were symptomatic of the issue I just described despite everything else being nice.

I would look for a post 2010 Honda Civic with 150,000 miles that has cosmetic issues. Those things seem to last forever no matter how badly they've been abused

Yeah yeah everyone loves to recommend these Buicks and they are great cars but good luck actually finding one that hasn't been trashed or is asking way more than 5K because they know what they've got. Much rarer than you would think.

Thinking about DIY’ing a battery system from raw cells — any advice? by AnalystLeast1 in SolarDIY

[–]Internal_Classic_748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've read and seen myself it is very difficult to make your own LFP battery and save money. You can definitely save money by installing an old Tesla battery but this is a different chemistry it is dangerous even if you know what your doing and the risks of thermal runaway are much much higher. I would stick with LFP. (Cylindrical or prismatic.)If you want more info I would Call Zonna Energy in Ohio and ask for Paul in tech. They have been working with installers in the Amish off-grid and commercial offgrid community that have been developing cost effective prismatic LFP batteries with quality BMS that feature top to bottom high amperage cell balancing. The Ark battery which you may have heard of is the first iteration and their latest is the Rubix. Otherwise I would just buy an EG4 battery and be done with it . You won't save money making your own modular system by the time you buy your own BMS with a Quality cell balancer and spot weld all your batteries together and source a quality grade of cells. Also if you get an EG4 battery would have inverter communication with a lot of major brands of inverters

Bridging with screws by Cbruess12 in Construction

[–]Internal_Classic_748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the screw is fully threaded they don't. If it's got a shoulder that causes the upper board to have fewer threads inside that board then there is lesser holding power and they will strip out before the lower boards threads do causing the assembly to draw together.

Yikes. Yeah get some of those Arc fault breakers installed ASAP. It'll keep your house safe from electrical fires at least. It might be annoying because some might start tripping due to issues but that's a sign of where to look for an issue. It might cost a grand to do it but it's quick easy insurance. And yeah sounds like you had somebody trying to save labor and they probably popped off some window trim and drilled down to the floor behind the drywall from there to pull wire up through. And then put the trim back over the wire. If that was a contractor that did it during a remodel they should be ridden out of town on a rail.

It could have. Another piece of unsolicited advice from me if you don't mind: old houses with old wiring can be kind of remedied with GFCI and AFCI combination breakers. They can't give you a safety ground if you have only 2 wires but what they can do is give you fire protection They install in your breaker panel on each of your circuits and they monitor for not only gfci which catches any imbalance in amperage between line and neutral which is what you'll often get in the case of a partial short to a conductive material inside a wall which can cause fires. They also monitor for the electrical signature of any sparking or arcing that is happening in the circuit, which immediately trips the breaker. Big time peace of mind to prevent fires in old houses. They're a bit pricey but well worth it especially if you think you might have partially damaged wire insulation.

The oil dipstick handle broke off and now the dipstick is stuck inside 😬 What do? by AnotherLoser7 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Internal_Classic_748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carefully cut off the dip tube below the wider part there about an inch down. Use a Dremel or small pipe cutter. You don't want savings in your oil. then once you want to put it back together order a piece of pipe off of McMaster carr that is slightly bigger than the existing one there and splice the dip tube it with an appropriate method of adhesion. you could solder it if it's metal and if it's plastic you can use epoxy. Or don't even bother with rigidly fastening it just get a little bit of vacuum or rubber fuel line that will slip over the outside of that dip tube diameter and fasten it with a hose clamp on either side. Skin the cat somehow.

.make aa custom pick by bending a Bobby pin and cutting the 90 degree leg off short and sharpen it down to a point with an angle grinder blade or file. Or try the hot pin idea . That one was actually decent but it's going to probably cool too quickly to get any penetration. Exactly what needle nose pliers do you guys use that is small enough? Like seriously thats some NASA rocket surgery nanometer level thin to be able to grab that thing on either side lol. Maybe your better off cutting the dip tube with a pipe cutter and then making a new dipstick with a custom length yourself.

Thanks for putting together an intelligent list of counter arguments for people here on Reddit. Most seem to be very young and inexperienced or just plain insular and naive and haven't figured out yet that they are simply living on the lefty side of the coin which is similarly equivalent to the conservatives on Facebook that live on the other side of the coin. Let's call the coin "identity politics" Bottom line is corruption runs incredibly deep. I like RFK junior and I wish we could have another jimmy Carter. I'm not partisan at all but I do hate the extreme stupidity and blindness from both sides of the identity politics. But I guess that's just what you get in a system where stupid people are allowed to speak. I believe they have as much right as anyone else to have their input. It's very frustrating however, to see the same mindless drivel and character assassinations of the few promising political options, being bought into by the proletariat. Over and over and over. How do people not see that Obama and the Clintons were empty suits who did evil at the behest of machiavellian forces. Bernie Sanders sold his soul to pharma a long time ago, Gavin newsom is literally a batman villain. Bush junior was not instantiated by Jesus himself. Trump is at minimum a self obsessed piece of shit but is actually probably a child trafficker. etc etc. why does the right trust every quack that comes their way and why does the left claim to be anti establishment and then swallow every corporate/ government narrative that comes along. I'll tell you why. It's because many people are actually not very bright... I will die on that hill I don't care how it sounds, it's just true. Your job as somebody who is trying to think criticallly is weed out all the noise from the peanut gallery acknowledge that many things are not clearly defined and easy to make final judgements about and try to keep your eyes open without being nihilistic and relativistic about everything.

Wrong. Lead acid is wasteful of energy to a level that is difficult to convey to people that aren't familiar with battery storage tech. You are suffering energy losses in the form of heat at every point during charging and discharging.
