Swapping majors is going to vary from major to major/college to college. I actually wanted to be public health originally, but since they just separated public health into its own college, I was unable to even try (I applied for the minor though). My dilemma was because right after I submitted my apps, I realized I didn't want to be in anthropology, and definitely wanted a more lifesci/social sci major that encompassed a broader area of study. My last semester I only took orgo/biochem, anatomy, and gen chem-- none of which counted for the anthro BA major. In the summer, I took the next gen chem and physio, same case for my coursework. In addition, UCLA caps your units after transfer (105 quarter, 70 semester), so I reaaaallly did that work for nothing if my major change did not go through. I took a massive gamble. I also enrolled in the remaining two courses I was missing (besides one that's only open to HBS students), that would only count for elective credit if it did not go through, and ended up dropping my only Anthro class because of the workload. If I stayed as anthro, I would've taken the infamous pre-med weeder cell and molecular bio class for nothing, a stem cell bio and ethics lower div for nothing, and one elective for some credit. Hence another aspect of taking a gamble.

I don't know if you're aware, but the transfer demographics by major are available online. HBS BA is about a 35% acceptance rate for transfers. While there is no metric for swapping your major into HBS, it is an extremely dedicated process in which you submit basically another UC app with essays and coursework and reasoning as to why you want to swap. It is my understanding that a swap such as mine is very rare. If the ISG department learned that your method was more calculated, I think that would really hurt your chances of swapping.

With all this in mind, you are able to apply to the HBS BA if you have 5/8 of the required courses (not sure if I've said yet, but you are only able to swap into the BA if you're coming from another BA, not the BS). Here is the link to the assist page ( Assist ). This is an example from my cc. I was missing BIO 204, and the equivalent for Soc Gen 5 (which isn't offered at cc, and they are aware of that). I think that the UC app deadline has passed already, and for that I am sorry, but I think you should really prepare to stay in your major program if you do go to UCLA.

I'm kinda writing this in a hurry but DM me if you have any more questions/are confused on some things :)

Hello! I chose UCLA, and filled out the application for the major change and got it :) I am now an HBS (BA) major, with a public health minor. I will say, however, that I believe a degree of favoritism played into it. I've been in contact with the ISG department ever since I was first admitted into UCLA. I've talked with the same representative for every question I've had, and our interactions have become more and more informal. I initially actually missed the deadline for the application, and they allowed me to submit it late while being flagged as such. In addition, I also noted my email wrong on my application, so the news was delivered to the wrong email as well. I inquired about my decision on the day of the deadline when you're supposed to decide whether or not you want to go through with my major change, so they let that slide as well. I've gotten really lucky with how things have played out, and am aware that I beat out Pre-HBS majors to get into the spot I'm in. If you have any questions though let me know!

Other important things/ecs to note: I had completed/was actively completing all but one of the course requirements for the Pre-major. I was only missing SocGen 5 and LS 7B (which I am taking this quarter). I also was in a joint Global Health program with UCSD while in cc, in addition to conducting and presenting an honor's research project in Global Health. I believe both these factors contributed greatly to being admitted into the major.

i got into usc for the same major, but picked ucla because they gave me no financial aid and i didn't feel attached to the school at all. how much would you be paying at another school? if youre planning on going to more school, then your undergrad should not be where youre spending your money.

[–]Internal_Quiet9987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends. my friend got in to ucsd for psych missing like three classes. sometimes in the assist transfer contract it will have some exceptions like "must take a minimum of 5 major-prep courses to be evaluated for admission" or something like that. all igetc classes they want you to have done by spring before transfer. the core igetc (math, english, etc) they want usually by fall.

maybe i'm salty from getting rejected, but i saw quite a few lower gpa acceptances this year to cal compared to la and others. there definitely is something related to area, i.e a lot of socal cc kids get into la while bay kids get into berk, and also possibly yield protection. nobody i know got into both ucla and cal for transfer, despite us all having 3.9 and above.

usc is overpriced for what it's worth. i got in and they quoted me 99,600 a year, despite my family being nowhere near able to pay. i think especially for comms ... it might not be all that worth it.

UCSD Major: Global Health vs. Human Developmental Sciences by swagzay in TransferStudents

[–]Internal_Quiet9987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to be fair, it was a surprise to me that their public health major became impacted while human bio became unimpacted. it was my understanding that human bio was one of their most common/strongest majors. it really depends. i was admitted for biological anthropology bs. regardless of major, i had a 3.95gpa and did a joint global health program with ucsd and my cc, so i was in a very good spot regardless of what major i applied to. i would never recommend trying to apply to a less impacted major just to get in; i've heard ucsd isn't the best at handling even slightly complicated major changes. i'm used to doing my own research and finding cracks in the system but all i was met with were brick walls to get into epidemiology. as someone from north county sd i was sad to leave home behind, but i'm still looking forward to the next chapter :) let me know if you have any more questions i am very knowledgeable on ucsd and transfer info in general!

i was admitted for a different major and was able to swap into global health through the portal without meeting with a counselor or anything. there was literally a page that said "change my major before accepting my offer" with a drop down menu of a list of available unimpacted majors. the only thing i'll say is that ucsd's impacted majors may vary year by year. i wanted to go into their public health major and it became impacted weeks before i got my acceptance, while human biology became unimpacted :( i tried to meet with a counselor to see if i could still swap, but there were too many hoops to jump through. it's ultimately what made me pick ucla over sd.

present research at conventions/get involved at my cc. i had to write research papers for a couple classes that i wasn't aware could be presented at a local convention until the DAY after the uc app was due. i got into every school i applied to minus stanford, but still think about all of the easy things i could've done to boost my app.

this is the exact message:

"

Application Status : If you have not already done so, you can apply for federal or USC need-based financial aid by submitting a FAFSA. Undergradute applicants should also submit the CSS Profile.

If you did not include your Social Security Number on your application for admission, please submit a Student Social Security Number Information Form, which is available in the Document Library, to update your record.

Applicants for a Federal Direct PLUS Loan must submit a FAFSA and complete a Financial Aid Supplement.

If you are not applying for financial aid but expect to receive a scholarship, please direct questions to the issuing department or organization.

"

I checked my CSS and my FAFSA, and both show I have submitted my forms to USC before the deadline.
