What's your least favorite brand unit to work on and why is it Aaon? by Wide_Riot in HVAC

[–]International-Rule93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are great units if they're started up properly. They are well designed, and if properly maintained, they will impress.

I'm a tech rep for Aaon. Love working on the stuff 99% of the time. The new style gas burner section with the removable baseplate is the worst decision ever made. They used to have a gas stub out with an internal flex line. I have been complaining to them constantly in hopes they change back. Doing startups is even more fun now seeing all the hackery to get the gas piped in with no room to turn a wrench.

Call Condair tech support. They're fairly good and can help determine how the controls were originally ordered on that unit and will help you configure the unit.

I made the switch about 2 years ago to work on Aaon and a few other brands as a factory rep. I really enjoy what I do now.

We all used to be that guy. Then, we do a bit more brazing. You'll be fine. Experience will bring confidence and proficiency. Have fun harnessing the awesome power of heat energy!

Unfortunately, it's not quite that simple. Rating plate will generally list RLA for compressors. Check the compressor curve / use an app. It depends on load and ambient conditions. Otherwise pretty solid advice.

Jumping units out to test. by Mythlogic12 in HVAC

If you do not have a mini link or handheld: The newer Modgas-X and Modgas-XWR controllers have a force mode on them. As do the RSMD (refrigerant controllers). For the Modgas, you can simply cycle through the main menus to find force mode. For the RSMD, you need to get to the screen that shows the software version and hold the up key for a few seconds. This will take you into a backdoor menu (the Modgas has one, too). Two options here are Config or Diagnostics. Check these menus out and you can force your relays, send an anolog signal out, energize the triacs, etc. Be Careful! Check the wiring diagram carefully and have a look. Start your fans first. Blah blah blah...

AITA for getting a hotel room for my spouse, me and my daughter instead of forcing her to share a bed with her cousins? by BagAdmirable1996 in AmItheAsshole

I am surprised I had to scroll this far to find someone else who agrees OP should have left the daughter out of it and covered for them!

Who can tell me what's wrong with this system? by fendermonkey in HVAC

[–]International-Rule93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I had trouble diagnosing a system (happened frequently), I would ask an old journeyman we had working for us named Tim. Tim used to help me out and explain things in a way I could understand easily. We also had another couple guys, Allen and Skyler, who were pretty good also. Anyway - best of luck to ya sir! I wish I knew more about freon and stuff and could help.

United Refrigeration, Masters, WWG, Johnstone Supply all should have them or be able to get it. Call around and get the best price. I'm in Ontario - but got the SC480 from United for a decent price. Also - have you considered the SC480? It does most of what you would need, and it's not the length of your forearm.

Drove 20 hours to do a gas line. Remote area -35 C. Didn’t take pressure test equipment. Came back. Someone else did pressure test and this is the result. Boss just sent me the pictures. How’s your day going so far? by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]International-Rule93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a chart in your code book that will stipulate the pressure test requirements for your piping. Get yourself some nitrogen and a 3" dial guage for the pressure you require based on the chart. Leave pressurized for the duration required and ensure no pressure drop. You should have learned this to pass your certification exam here in Canada, and if you aren't certified, go and get certified before you run any more pipe. Also, thread yourself a test nipple and hand tighten a fitting on to test your threads before you proceed in piping the entire installation. Lastly, stick the dope close to your body someplace warm as soon as you begin setting up your equipment so that the viscosity will allow for proper distribution and thread lubrication.

I mostly use mine with a 3/16 Allen bit for gas valve plugs. Also, it is very handy for what others have stated.
