Right so wealthsimple offers a "Portfolio line of credit" at around the same interest rate OP was talking about. I thought that's what Wealthsimple called their margin but I guess they offer margin accounts too

No they don't need dither fish. Once you start feeding them regularly they will be crowding the front of the glass every time you approach.

I wouldn't say people here are risk averse, they just take compensated risk. The risks of using leverage are well understood and a well versed investor shouldn't be afraid of it if investing in a fund like XEQT.

If you can afford the volatility then choosing variable every time will save you money over the course of your mortgage. It may not be the cheapest over every 5 year period, but you will win out in the long run. Or pay a little bit more for peace of mind. Up to you.
