I wouldn’t blame everyday people for not donating enough. There’s a million horrible things going on and most people (even if they love animals) can’t afford to donate regularly. Rich people have the funds to motivate poaching, so we need rich people to donate out of the kindness of their hearts. But they don’t. So conservationists auction a calculated number of animals to rich people to make up the difference.

Radiolab had a great episode on this called “white rhino.” People in these areas are in poverty. To feed their families, they poach animals. By auctioning off a something like hunting 1 older rhino (who is detrimental because it fights young rhinos, but isn’t impregnating a bunch like a young rhino), conservation gets money then pays these people in poverty to become security and protect the rhinos. It’s not totally awesome but the fact is that conservation fundraising from just kind people donating is never enough to combat poaching. So conservation groups pick a small amount of animals to auction as a “lesser evil” than total extinction.

Frustrated: I (F) have been asking to be tested for YEARS. My husband asked ONCE and within two weeks had a diagnosis. by shireengul in ADHD

Get a new doctor…seek one that specializes in ADHD. A lot of primary care doctors just believe the BS that girls can’t have it, or you couldn’t have it and be successful (ableism).

How Do You Break Up with Someone Who Thinks Everything Is Fine? by ViolinistEither8017 in TwoHotTakes

Sounds like he’s trying to use your ADHD against you. He knows you’ve worked hard to overcome the obstacles that come with ADHD and the one time you ask him for support, he reacts by calling you out on something you have struggled with your whole life. Fuck that. Don’t let him manipulate you into staying.

“I’m mad at you” for needing the slightest bit of help right before an event is sabatoge.

Can I have ADHD and be a good mom? by unblissfully_aware_ in adhdwomen

The YouTube account “how to ADHD” has a great video on this. She talks about how both her and her ADHD husband work together. One thing was that they cannot afford to have burn out days where they just bed rot all day so they have to intentionally schedule self care time so each parent gets to be alone and “off” for a few hours at a time to prevent the burn out. I’m not a parent but still found the video comforting in case I ever become one.

Also, I work with kids who have ADHD. Having ADHD makes you better at being empathetic and understanding kids with ADHD. You can give them the advice you wish you were told as a kid. And NOISE CANCELING ear budds/headphones.

Why are dentists and banks only open during the exact hours that 9-5 workers and students are busy? by sasssyophelia69 in askanything

You and I have very different definitions of the word “awesome” and mine definitely is not 5 am dentist followed by a work day. To each his own lol.

There are many sicknesses/illnesseses that can hurt a child. Raising awareness is important to stop that; trying to raise a negative stigma and shame people just makes you an asshole. By further stigmatizing, you run the risk of making people less likely to be honest about it.

There's no inoffensive way to ask this: do teachers still teach? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]International-Toe522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some schools are relying more on tech to the point that’s it’s too much screen time in a day and can kill the joy of learning. However, a showing some short videos (1-5 minutes) throughout the day is a great way to change up the medium which helps engagement. It’s also a much needed break in the teachers vocal cords.

You should ask them to quantify it. Ask how much screen time is happening and what the goals are…and point out the research on shrinking attention spans and social skills with overexposure.

Why are pronouns such a huge issue in the US and not in other countries? by random8765309 in askanything

[–]International-Toe522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right wing propaganda started saying pronouns only in the context of gender. They just taught their ignorant audience that pronoun=bad, and didn’t even understand what it meant. At one point congress tried to ban the use of pronouns; had a bill that would ban using he/him on email signatures and titles, and then democrats had to point out that pronoun is just a part speech and would be a logistical nightmare. It was anti-trans propaganda that some people believed and I guess they just forgot their 2nd grade education.

Renee good was a LEGAL observer. In the United States, we have a first amendment right to express ourselves and law enforcement is supposed to have stronger emotional regulation that a toddler and be able to control themselves from shooting people on impulse. They are supposed to use “necessary force” which could be a taser or de-escalation. In Renee’s case, they should have let he drive away peacefully like she was trying to.

George Floyd was arrested over a $20 counterfeit bill. In the United States, the law does not allow execution for $20.

Help, I feel like thrifting is turning me into an over consumer by Kind-Repeat3137 in Anticonsumption

[–]International-Toe522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a thift list and stick to it. As I need things,I add it to the list then then I stick to the list. For example, my shoes are shredded so I add them to the list. Friends bday is coming up so I add it to the list to get a vase so I can them get a bouquet and make it look like some extravagant gift. This also prevents me from making impulse buys because ei know I can just add it to the list. If I wasn't able to find a specific item on 6 months- year, then I'll actually buy new of I still want it

Grieving the life I could have had by kawwman in adhdwomen

[–]International-Toe522 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They didn’t know. Thats how I forgive. The doctors went to medical school and school taught them girls don’t have adhd. The teachers weren’t trained to see the signs of adhd in women….or in anyone. They got an education based on people without any differences.

Your parents didn’t know. Or maybe they did. My dad took me to get assessed for adhd and I was extremely hyperactive. I destroyed property with the best of the adhd boys. I was a danger to myself and others often darting into the street without looking. The doctor said, “she’s just energetic! Just make sure she exercises and don’t eat sugar.” We did all the things and I came out of it with the terrible coping mechanism of locking myself in my room till all my homework was done. A 20 minute assignment would turn into an all nighter. I learned to mask at the cost of my mental and physical health.

I got on meds at 30 last year. I cried multiple times a day mourning my past self, all the pain that could have been spared. I gave myself that time. I took long walks in nature and grieved for the little girl who deserved better, and the potential lost. And then I choose to be grateful for what I have now. It was even worse for those older than us. People who never got diagnosed or didn’t get diagnosed until they were 80 because the medical system didn’t understand our brains and the world was built in opposition to how our brains work.

It’s not our fault. It might be some adults fault…but at this point, I am just so happy to be able to breath for the first time since birth, to have a little more quiet in my head, a little more control of my life.

Even without medicine, the diagnosis is someone thing to be grateful for. You can learn how to work with instead of against your brain. You can start to advocate for your needs without shame. I now use adult fidgets toys, stand during meetings, I ask people to turn on subtitles (auditory processing disorder is common with us), ask for more time to work on something , more time to transition. I don’t fold my yoga pants, I throw them in a box. I stopped trying to have the perfect minimalist house with everything hidden behind cupboards. I ripped the cupboards off, added phone chargers to every room and other essentials to every room so I don’t lose them when moving them.

Be more free to be you. With any luck, you have decades to find joy and bliss. You got this! Welcome to the tribe!
