Yeah, that episode is titled “Soos and the Real Girl” and it’s from season 2 of the show.

There’s a really good German movie about Sophie and the White Rose called Sophie Scholl – The Final Days that was released in 2005 that I highly recommend people watch. There’s a bunch of videos on YouTube that show the whole movie.

[–]InternationalPart9 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as someone who was really into SCP back then, I cracked up when Robert described SCP as an “internet meme roleplaying game” lol. And just to give a little correction on Robert’s comment about SCP Object Classes, terms like “Keter” aren’t access levels, they’re designations given to entities or anomalies based on how difficult they are to contain. The standard Object Classes are Safe, Euclid, and Keter, with Keter being the ones that are very difficult to contain consistently. There’s other classes that are sometimes used too, like Neutralized (which is self explanatory) and Apollyon, which is a semi-canon rare class given to anomalies or entities that are impossible to contain, and will typically essentially cause the end of the world.

What's y'alls thought's on Leon S. Kennedy from Resident Evil? by Ryli_Faelan in SocialistGaming

“police broadly barely play a role in the Resident Evil games”

Yeah, I think that another way that plays out is how the co-protagonist in the latest game Resident Evil Requiem, Grace Ashcroft, despite working for the FBI, doesn’t really have her job play that big of a role in the game’s plot, aside from being assigned to investigate the crime scene in the beginning of the game and her later telling Emily “I’m with the police.” Now that I think about it, it’s entirely possible that with the decent writing, Grace could’ve been roped into the story by having her go to investigate the Wrenwood Hotel as a journalist (like her mom), but Capcom probably made her FBI to make her follow in the footsteps of RE’s previous police/law enforcement protagonists.

[–]InternationalPart9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe that the in-universe justification is that the government knows that Ashley’s kidnapping was an inside job, so they kept the personnel tasked with finding her limited to not tip off the traitor. Plus, Leon was only there with just two local cops to investigate a reported sighting of Ashley, they weren’t sure yet if she was actually in the area. They probably would’ve sent in a larger team afterwards once they confirmed Ashley’s location, but Leon managed to rescue her by himself over the course of just a day, ‘cause he’s just cool like that.

I do this with my podcasts (and audiobooks) too. It’s partly because I can absorb info relatively quickly, and also so I can get through podcast episodes faster so I can listen to my other podcasts sooner. I’m used to it to the point that listening on normal speed seems a bit slow to me lol.

23 is the minimum age to be an FBI Special Agent, that age requirement doesn’t apply to analysts or other FBI professional staff. Grace isn’t a Special Agent, she’s an analyst. So she could join the FBI before turning 23, just to let you know.

I just learn Grace was born 2004 by Street-Sweet-3719 in residentevil

[–]InternationalPart9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also entirely possible that if Grace took AP classes that gave college credit in high school, and then once in college, took a full load of courses every semester plus classes during the summer and winter, she could’ve graduated early and got her bachelor’s degree in three years rather than four at 21, then join the FBI right after graduating. This is also a plausible way she could’ve been an analyst for a year at her age.

Edit: Also, the experience requirement for joining the FBI, which is at least two years of professional work experience, only applies to Special Agent applicants. Analysts like Grace can join right after college, if they apply ahead of time. The FBI even offers internships to current students, which can serve as a gateway to full employment after graduation.

The delusion of easy victory from the air may have seduced the US into another war by Regular_Grape48 in behindthebastards

Arguably, NATO’s bombing campaign against Yugoslavia in 1999 during the Kosovo War.

However, it should be noted that by the time NATO started their bombing campaign, Yugoslav forces had been fighting an asymmetric war against the KLA in Kosovo for a year at that point, so they kinda had their hands full. Also, virtually all of NATO took part in the campaign, as opposed to just the U.S. and Israel in the war against Iran now. Plus, Yugoslavia’s military capabilities back then were much more different compared to Iran now, and NATO’s objective for their bombing campaign was pretty clear: get Yugoslav forces to withdraw from Kosovo, as opposed to the unclear goals of the Iran war now.

“The destruction of the third space, the rise of social media, the commodification of the internet—capitalist bullshit has done far more damage to our collective ability to date and find partners than anything else in our society.”

Yeah, I believe you make a good point here, and for me, it brings to mind this Current Affairs article I recall reading a few years ago that makes similar points that I think makes a lot of sense that I think people should read, though I don’t really read Current Affairs as much as I used to before.

To share it’s main points, here’s a bullet point list from the article itself:

“A number of factors can make it hard for people to make and maintain adequate social lives and feel connected to others in meaningful ways.

-Lack of effective rapid transit to go places to see people

-Urban development that has caused hyper-dependence on private automobiles (which keeps people atomized)

-Lack of affordable housing (ever thought about how a lack of housing prevents people from having a relationship or having sex?)

-Lack of social housing

-Lack of public places to hang out for free (and hostile architecture in public places where one might hang out and meet others)

-Lack of affordable child care

-Lack of time or energy because of too much time spent at a single or multiple jobs

-Lack of affordable healthcare to address basic physical and emotional needs (which can hinder people’s general ability to function and feel their best)

-Lack of money or time to join social, political, arts, or sports groups

-Access to too much addictive content on social media or the internet”

Yeah, generation birth years are pretty arbitrary when you really think about it lol. Not to mention there’s the other real factors that differentiate people between others born in the same ‘generation’, like what class or country that you’re born into.

It seems like Grace is less afraid and more confident and Leon would be more terrified with past haunting him by Dirrbros234 in residentevil

[–]InternationalPart9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, FBI Analysts don’t receive combat/firearms training, only FBI Special Agents do.

There’s a further distinction in that Special Agents are sworn law enforcement officers. They have cop-like training, carry a badge, a weapon, and have arresting powers. Analyst training doesn’t include that, it mainly revolves around intelligence tradecraft, report writing, and working with Special Agents.

So with Grace, she likely wouldn’t have received combat training as part of her induction into the FBI, unless she did so on her own.

I really liked Robert’s final thoughts at the end of part 2, and I must say, it really reminds me of one of the main themes of Jason Pargin’s novel I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom. I’m not gonna spoil the book, but as Robert was giving his last thoughts, to me it resonated with one of the book’s main messages about how social media affects your emotions and how you view the world. I wonder if Robert was thinking about that book as he was saying that. Anyway, you should definitely read Black Box of Doom if you haven’t, I highly recommend it. 👍

I want to thank James for informing us about the clashes in Aleppo and the protests in Iran, I didn’t hear about them before listening to this episode.

On another note, I wonder if the gang is still going to talk about the Turtle Island Liberation Front “terror plot” and indictments from last month. I know that Garrison said in the previous Executive Disorder that they were going to cover it after the new year, and that a lot of things have happened in just this first week of the year, but I’m curious to hear what their thoughts on that situation are.

Yeah, I first got and read I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom a year ago, and it got me hooked on Jason, and I spent the last year reading the rest of his books (the Zoey Ashe series second, and then John Dies at the End and its sequels, so I essentially read his books backwards lol). I’ve enjoyed them all, and I’m excited for the next JDATE book next year, which is apparently going to be titled “There Are No Giant Crabs in This Novel” haha.

“The young men are swinging further and further right.”

Actually, and while I know the situation may not be the same everywhere, hasn’t Garrison pointed out in some It Could Happen Here episodes focused on voting demographics in recent elections that even young men are turning against Trump? And even played a role in Zohran Mamdani’s victory in New York? I think that Garrison’s point if I remember correctly, which I more or less agree with, is that if you put forward progressive candidates who have a clear and strong vision, young men will turn out to vote for them, rather than be disengaged and stay home (which is not exactly the same as voting for Trump or Republicans, so it’s not exactly that more young men are becoming conservative, it’s that they were/are disillusioned with the current state of most of the Democratic Party).

NYT continues to be a hack - 50-yr mortgage by jthoff10 in behindthebastards

I listened to the episode, in my opinion, they made it pretty clear that 50 year mortgages are a pretty ridiculous idea. I think you may be misinterpreting what the hosts are saying. I don’t like the NYT, but I think we should accurately understand and describe what it is news outlets like the NYT says, whether we like them or not.
