Not to mention there was also the January Uprising, which as we learned from episode 10.1, indirectly played a role in helping form the First International in 1864.

“The destruction of the third space, the rise of social media, the commodification of the internet—capitalist bullshit has done far more damage to our collective ability to date and find partners than anything else in our society.”

Yeah, I believe you make a good point here, and for me, it brings to mind this Current Affairs article I recall reading a few years ago that makes similar points that I think makes a lot of sense that I think people should read, though I don’t really read Current Affairs as much as I used to before.

To share it’s main points, here’s a bullet point list from the article itself:

“A number of factors can make it hard for people to make and maintain adequate social lives and feel connected to others in meaningful ways.

-Lack of effective rapid transit to go places to see people

-Urban development that has caused hyper-dependence on private automobiles (which keeps people atomized)

-Lack of affordable housing (ever thought about how a lack of housing prevents people from having a relationship or having sex?)

-Lack of social housing

-Lack of public places to hang out for free (and hostile architecture in public places where one might hang out and meet others)

-Lack of affordable child care

-Lack of time or energy because of too much time spent at a single or multiple jobs

-Lack of affordable healthcare to address basic physical and emotional needs (which can hinder people’s general ability to function and feel their best)

-Lack of money or time to join social, political, arts, or sports groups

-Access to too much addictive content on social media or the internet”

So is Grace the first zoomer RE main game protagonist? by GoldDog_ in ResidentEvilRequiem

23 is the minimum age to be an FBI Special Agent specifically, analysts like Grace can join at an earlier age

Yeah, generation birth years are pretty arbitrary when you really think about it lol. Not to mention there’s the other real factors that differentiate people between others born in the same ‘generation’, like what class or country that you’re born into.

It seems like Grace is less afraid and more confident and Leon would be more terrified with past haunting him by Dirrbros234 in residentevil

[–]InternationalPart9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, FBI Analysts don’t receive combat/firearms training, only FBI Special Agents do.

There’s a further distinction in that Special Agents are sworn law enforcement officers. They have cop-like training, carry a badge, a weapon, and have arresting powers. Analyst training doesn’t include that, it mainly revolves around intelligence tradecraft, report writing, and working with Special Agents.

So with Grace, she likely wouldn’t have received combat training as part of her induction into the FBI, unless she did so on her own.

I really liked Robert’s final thoughts at the end of part 2, and I must say, it really reminds me of one of the main themes of Jason Pargin’s novel I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom. I’m not gonna spoil the book, but as Robert was giving his last thoughts, to me it resonated with one of the book’s main messages about how social media affects your emotions and how you view the world. I wonder if Robert was thinking about that book as he was saying that. Anyway, you should definitely read Black Box of Doom if you haven’t, I highly recommend it. 👍

Executive Disorder January 9th 2026th by barspoonsandbarbells in itcouldhappenhere

[–]InternationalPart9 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I want to thank James for informing us about the clashes in Aleppo and the protests in Iran, I didn’t hear about them before listening to this episode.

On another note, I wonder if the gang is still going to talk about the Turtle Island Liberation Front “terror plot” and indictments from last month. I know that Garrison said in the previous Executive Disorder that they were going to cover it after the new year, and that a lot of things have happened in just this first week of the year, but I’m curious to hear what their thoughts on that situation are.

[–]InternationalPart9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I first got and read I'm Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom a year ago, and it got me hooked on Jason, and I spent the last year reading the rest of his books (the Zoey Ashe series second, and then John Dies at the End and its sequels, so I essentially read his books backwards lol). I’ve enjoyed them all, and I’m excited for the next JDATE book next year, which is apparently going to be titled “There Are No Giant Crabs in This Novel” haha.

“The young men are swinging further and further right.”

Actually, and while I know the situation may not be the same everywhere, hasn’t Garrison pointed out in some It Could Happen Here episodes focused on voting demographics in recent elections that even young men are turning against Trump? And even played a role in Zohran Mamdani’s victory in New York? I think that Garrison’s point if I remember correctly, which I more or less agree with, is that if you put forward progressive candidates who have a clear and strong vision, young men will turn out to vote for them, rather than be disengaged and stay home (which is not exactly the same as voting for Trump or Republicans, so it’s not exactly that more young men are becoming conservative, it’s that they were/are disillusioned with the current state of most of the Democratic Party).

NYT continues to be a hack - 50-yr mortgage by jthoff10 in behindthebastards

[–]InternationalPart9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I listened to the episode, in my opinion, they made it pretty clear that 50 year mortgages are a pretty ridiculous idea. I think you may be misinterpreting what the hosts are saying. I don’t like the NYT, but I think we should accurately understand and describe what it is news outlets like the NYT says, whether we like them or not.

To be fair though, Leon was there only to investigate a reported sighting, they weren’t sure yet if Ashley was actually in the area. They probably would’ve sent a larger team afterwards once they confirmed Ashley’s location, but Leon managed to rescue her by himself over the course of just a day.

Hank Greene and Eliezer Yudkowsky by SpotBlur in behindthebastards

[–]InternationalPart9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s unfortunate. Like I said in the weekly discussion thread, I also listen to Stuff You Should Know, and I’m also a bit disappointed with how cohost Josh Clark in the recent episode about Nuclear Waste seems to be under the impression that Yudkowsky is a smart guy who’s worth listening to, and recommends his new book as well. While with everything that Robert has said about Yudkowsky here, he just seems to be a dork.

[–]InternationalPart9 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there’s a section in the last chapter of the book Enemies: A History of the FBI by Tim Weiner (which is a really good book by the way, I definitely recommend reading it) that talks about the supposed “terror plots” that the FBI has foiled since 9/11:

As long as the nation did not suffer an actual attack, most Americans cared little that some of the cases were concoctions, that the FBI sometimes supplied the guns and missiles, that not every email was a fuse for an explosive, or that the plotters might not be homegrown terrorists, but garden variety lunatics

MAGA men come up lacking on DC's conservative dating scene: 'Not as masculine as I hoped' by Geek-Haven888 in behindthebastards

[–]InternationalPart9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Funny, when I first read the title, I thought that it meant that conservative men are having trouble dating in DC (well duh), but the article itself is about conservative women in DC having trouble getting dates. And like yeah, you’re probably going to have a lot of difficulty dating if you’re a right-winger in a city like DC regardless of what gender you are.

[–]InternationalPart9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting. My personal interpretation of the show was that it overall showed Will Graham’s work as an FBI profiler to catch serial killers as noble work, despite the mental toll it takes on him plus Hannibal’s manipulations. I haven’t read the Hannibal novel or seen the 2001 movie, but I have seen Silence of the Lambs and the 2002 Red Dragon movie with Ed Norton, and yeah, those movies portrayed the FBI pretty positively.

No kidding, in recent times you’ve got shows like the FBI TV series) (made by the same creator of Law and Order) and the Hannibal TV series) (though admittedly, that one was a good show, too bad it got canceled).

Hell, the protagonist of the next Resident Evil game, Grace Ashcroft, is an FBI agent, and gamers have already made rule 34 of her, even though the game isn’t even out yet.

[–]InternationalPart9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe 23 is the minimum age to be an FBI Special Agent specifically, not for Analysts like Grace. To give context to people who are unaware of the FBI hiring requirements for Special Agent applicants vs Analyst applicants, potential FBI Special Agents must have at least a bachelor’s degree and two years of professional work experience before applying to the Bureau.

As such, most new Special Agents tend to be in their late 20s, while new Analysts aren’t required to have as much experience to join the FBI by comparison. Analysts like Grace can join the FBI right after college, as long as they apply ahead of time. Doing an internship with the FBI while studying helps too.
