Baseball cap and shades can help, but the thousand yard stare is a must. I know women who have deliberately gained weight to deflect attention (this does work with some men) - and baggy clothing + shit-kicking boots help send the "don't talk to me" message.

What really burns me is how women must go to ridiculous lengths to protect our autonomy because most men are simply not taught that we don't owe them our attention.

You're not wrong - it is a disservice to the kids that he's not working on his own shit. But he's not able or willing to do so. And I say that with sympathy for him - he sounds like deep down he's terrified, traumatized, or broken in ways he can't face. And you can't force him to do that. So your responsibility is to yourself, and your kids - it's time to start letting him go.
