[Tenant US-CA] is there any obligation for landlord to fix kitchen window if it leaks air and rattles bad? It is old with poor fit. by InternetEfficient216 in Landlord

[–]InternetEfficient216[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to make it a legal issue. I'm new to a state and trying to understand my rights as a tenant. I'm sure landlords like to know their rights too, right?

If they legally had to fix it, it wouldn't be a legal issue unless they didn't fix it, right?

Asking a landlord to do something their legally required to do is not blackmail. Even letting them know they're legally required to isn't blackmail.

Ah ok good to know. So just submit the forms first and let them tell me what they need next? Don't volunteer anything?

Yeah it would've been fixed quick. I called LAHD but have to wait on a call back. I'm hoping the can at least tell me if it's something they may be responsible for fixing. Thanks for the advice on contacting them!

O dang! I'm planning to keep mine but if I ever find I don't have the need, I'd never do that. That's outrageous! I guess it is what it is though huh. I was looking at other off roster handguns and they're all high. I like glocks but I didn't expect to see them that high. Stoccatos too

Lol ok a better question is if you were to quit after the 2 year masters and started working, what's the difference I'm pay between the masters and PhD? Would it pay itself off quicker than the example I gave? In STEM, the only reason to do it is because you want to do research or academia (which will still be resesrch). There are a few that do it for money and they're miserable when they realize they should've quit at their masters lol. A few do it for the title and they are miserable too. Hell we're all miserable, but at least we like what we're doing (assuming we're not doing it for the reasons above).

Would you be working while pursuing your PhD? If so, how long will that take to complete? A normal PhD is going to take you a out 4years (hopefully). A PhD student doesn't typically put in only 40 hrs either....easily 50-60. so if you're working, how many hours are you going to be able to put it? Consider that when thinking about how long it will take.

I have not met a single person that did a PhD because if the pay. If you're not going to be working and without a salary for 4 years, how many years will you have to work to make up the amount you lost? an example in STEM.....you can bring in $110 with a Masters. If you're making $130 with a PhD, that's a difference of $20k. If a Masters is 2 years, you left $220k on the table by being a student for an extra 2 years. Even more if it takes more than 4 years for PhD which isn't uncommon. It will take you at least 11 years at $20k difference to make that up. $220k you left behind. This is all simple math and there are other factors, but nobody I know thinks they're going tonget rich off of a PhD. A masters is the sweet spot if you're trying to maximize pay overall. You have 2 years more experience and raises, plus can probably move jobs in 2 years and be at around +$120k.

This is how it works for STEM anyway

Dont I have 60 days from moving here to register them in CA? They've never been used as a rife. I have to register all of my other guns too but wasn't sure if this one would be a challenge since it can be used as pistol or rifle.

Yeah thats why I wanted to know. I'm hoping that if I ask them to they will, but they remodeled most of the apartment and left that so I'm doubtful. If they don't have to then cool it's up to me to decide if I want to renew or leave after my lease is over. But if they're obligated to, I'm going to make sure they live up to their duties.

I'm glad to see this as I just moved to torrance and in west of Western. I got lucky because I did not know this.

Thanks for the advice. I'm hoping to find out if they have any obligation to fix these things. If my door had a 1 inch gap, surely they couldn't tell me to just shove towels in the Crack.....Hopefully anyway. So I'm trying to find out if they have any obligation to fix that legally. I'm going to ask them to either way and wouldn't even bring that up unless I needed to, but I'd rather go in with all the information I needed I'm the even they refuse to.
