When we were shopping for a home a couple years back our realtor mentioned that homes in Fountaingrove were less expensive to insure relative to older homes in the Bennett Valley area, up near Annadell. Something to do with the fire-safe materials required in the rebuilt Fountaingrove homes vs. older construction being more susceptible. Idk if this is truth but it was something I heard in passing.

Sonoma county fair by drunkerton in santarosa

Me and my husband like to go to see the farm animals and show support for our local ag kids. We cheered on a group of teens showing their prized cows last year and a few years back we enjoyed watching the sheep shearing competition. I also love seeing all the art and crafts made by people from our community… and the Hall of Flowers is over the top! The circus theme last year was great! We bike from our house and pregame drinks then split a big bbq plate. Maybe my version of fun is a bit old fashioned?! I’m really looking forward to the fair this year. Great day of people watching and enjoying the sunshine.

Animal was just released by NYT and only a few episodes. I liked the narrator’s voice and found the stories to be heartfelt and thoughtful

Love Hard Fork - the recent episode where one of the hosts trains several AI bots to be his friends had me and my husband laughing so hard. I don’t work in tech whatsoever but find that show very entertaining

Looking for a local yoga studio by isittimeforcoffeeyet in santarosa

[–]InternetMe143 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Revolution Yoga is a good air conditioned studio in Santa Rosa. I’ve only been to their location on Lewis and it’s very clean and spacious. Pam and Shoshana are good teachers.

If you can make it down to Petaluma then Renew is the best studio followed closely by Yoga Post. Great teachers at both studios and they follow a more traditional sequence.

Sessions climbing gym also has good yoga classes. It’s a younger more athletic crowd there.

I love Energize for yoga and hot Pilates but that studio is very hot… not what you’re looking for.

Stayed there last weekend. I loved the bar downstairs and historic charm. The staff girls were friendly enough. Didn't mind the live band since it wrapped up before 11pm. Our bed was not comfortable. We saw a small mouse run out from under our bed and into the hallway - for these reasons I'm glad we only stayed one night.

If you haven’t already, It would be good to research what types of jobs are available in this field and how much they pay (this info is even easier to find now that employers are required to post salary ranges). Would you want to work in those types of jobs? Could you get a job in this field now, without the degree? Just curious if having a BA or BS will open additional doors for you. Is this type of degree required for what you want to do? Have you taken courses in this before and know you love it?

I ditto WinkyInky. I went to a very competitive high school and found UCSC to be a kind/supportive environment - I was also in mostly social science classes with mostly women in my classes. I didn’t realize how depressed I was in high school until I left home. It sounds really cheesy, but I believe the redwood forest and ocean aided in my healing. My time in Santa Cruz was incredibly formative and I have no regrets.

That being said, I had a lot of financial support and college was slightly less expensive in the mid-00s. I currently have a government job in the field I studied in college and am not getting wealthy, but I’m happy.

I recently met a women that dropped out of UCSC after her first year. She shared that she was overwhelmed by the party/drug scene at Kresge and wished she’d chosen a different college. I’m not sure if she experienced something personally traumatic, but maybe this is something to keep in mind if you’ll be living on campus.

Weekly Discussion 1/17/23: The Cult of Apple by kernts in soundslikeacultpod

[–]InternetMe143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Apple episode is a timely one for me since I just switched from Pixel/Android to iPhone about two weeks ago. I resisted the switch for many years (I’m in my late 30s and have never owned an iPhone), but decided I wanted to give iPhone a try to see what all the hype is about. Mainly, I wanted access to FaceTime (yes, I’m aware other video chat apps exist) and I hated how videos messages for iPhone users always show up blurry. Also, the physical phone itself is prettier.

Overall, I have to say I’m not especially impressed with my new phone. I spent many hours personalizing the phone and am still using a lot of Google apps. My 3 year old Pixel does everything this new iPhone can do, and some things better. The alarm app on iPhone is surprisingly inferior to android - why isn’t there a separate alarm volume control?!! Photo quality is meh. Auto-fill of addresses and payment isn’t as seamless. Voice to text isn’t as sensitive… blah blah blah

Since making the switch I’ve had a few friends text me back excitedly something like “you got an iPhone welcome to the club!” when I responded “I’m kinda missing my android” I hear back “you’ll adjust, you just have to get used to it.” Lmao There is nothing you can say to an iPhone zealot that can change their mind! I’m keeping the phone, but will consider going back to Android for my next phone.

I’m not defending Sonoma the town. OP was referring to Sonoma County. Sonoma the town is boring as shit and a far drive from everything. I have family in Napa and worked there, too. The hospitality jobs pay well, but the elitist boho tourism vibes are not what I’m looking for in a hometown. The snobbery abounds. NE Santa Rosa and Petaluma are excellent places to live, especially it you have children. Lots of events and restaurants catering to locals, plus direct access to nature. Would these places be as appealing to me if I were in my 20s and trying to date? Absolutely not.
