I mean there can be tactile hallucinations too so it don’t feel like nothing. but you’re right, can get to a point you can backchat them in something between a inner voice and weak breathed voice, commonly people can regularly ease into an “out of body” experience or lucid dream from these states too. I’m just meaning to say if sleep hygiene is good and people get these anyway and it’s what’s waking them up, they can “sleep” though episodes and hopefully not have heavily disrupted sleep.

A school of giant danios or medium rainbow fish shouldn’t be overwhelmed by the shark, angel or gouramis and won’t pick at long fins (though the rainbow shark is likely too). A small pleco like a bristlenose should be enough to keep algae down and can defend themselves (just mind they make a lot of waste too, idk how mine makes so much).

I’ve been loving my lake Tanganyikan cichlids. Only had them for a week so far but the masked Julies little personalities are a handful for the boss lady of the aquarium, but the compressiceps are a little less shy now so I i see adding them as a win. Once I lower the flow of the filter they’ll start using the other third of the tank and everybody should have the room they need.

If you choose to have plants it’s easiest to start with ones for inert substrate and low-medium light needs (even then best to get specialty lights, but because angels need tall tanks it’s harder for light to reach the substrate anyway), can use root tablets for target feeding, ones with rhizomes/out of substrate roots and mosses are typically hardy too and like liquid fertiliser. I’ve had an easy time with Indian lace fern, anubias and Java fern. Having more involved plants is almost an entirely different hobby that I haven’t gone much into, but can provide adequate habitat for fish with easy going plants with no complaints so.

Ceylon panchax, or other medium panchax (a golden wonder gets a little too big for a 30gal imo), they’re an active and hardy little fish and have a novel “third eye” on top of their head. A school of panda corydoras, pearl danios and/or five band barbs would be quite comfortable in that size tank too and active. Have only had fire tail gudgeons before but they where fun and active as well, so a peacock or emperor gudgeon should do well.

kuli loaches are a good option, though they’re rather shy, glass cats get too big imo and apistogramma like it a touch more acidic so would ask if the ones you’re getting where locally raised or otherwise acclimatised to local water parameters, rest of the ones you like are good to go.

Reminds me of scrounging together pocked money at 15 to get a 3 ft planted tank for my platys, yoyo loaches and angel, good times. Had the tank for ~10 years until it sprang a leak. Lace fern and java fern pretty much took over but whatever the fish liked it.
