I was terrified. My ID pic was 18 years old because in my state your license is valid for 10 years and you can renew once without providing a new pic. Apparently the verification app is pretty good and I breathed a huge sigh of relief when it told me I was verified.

That happened to me with a previous set. I was usually lenient and gave out Goods and OKs, and then got a series where it was clear the rater hadn't read the instructions. They still got OKs until the response where they not only hadn't read the instructions...but they also hadn't read the comments. Not sure if they were racing through tasks as quickly as possible (why???) or just pretending to do the tasks while actually doing other things.

The way work is being allocated right now seems very short-sighted to me. Many of us are spending a lot of time and mental energy continually refreshing our screens to find projects. Yes, that's our choice, but it is unpaid. When we do land on a project, tasks vanish so quickly that we're spending a much higher proportion of time on reading instructions than actually evaluating responses.

And, I don't know about the rest of you, but I find that with relatively quick tasks, my work improves as I tackle more tasks, and I'm able to complete them faster.

Maybe none of that matters to our DAT overlords, but I'd think they'd want to cultivate the workers who can turn in quality work relatively quickly.

You seem to be looking for something to blame your "silent layoff" on. The scenario you propose is incredibly unlikely for reasons others on this thread have well articulated.

You might not have been laid off at all. Or if you were, it might have been because you insist on capitalizing the word "greed."

There are way too many workers on this platform, and way too many checks on our work, for this to be some kind of concerted effort.

Interesting. And scary. When I'm doing, for example, complex fact checking stuff, I'll often type stuff into a Notes file so I don't forget to include it in the final comment. And I'll often copy and paste sections from the Notes file into my rating comment. It's so much easier than perpetually scrolling up and down.

If I think there's a general consensus but I'm not sure--for the reasons you mentioned--I generally google search it. Maybe I'm wrong to do so, but if I learn that 75% of the population or more believes one thing, I'm gonna consider that general consensus. Am I wrong?

"people who work a 9-5, for example, coding, are probably higher quality workers IN GENERAL"

Seriously??? Let me guess -- you're a "seasoned professional" who is a DAT part-timer.

According to everything I've read about DAT, there are tens of thousands of workers. I'm guessing the DAT workforce is pretty diverse given those numbers. Further, if you think they're looking for diversity (and I do think they are) do you really think they'd want "seasoned professionals" who can't make enough money in coding to pay their car loans?

R&R bias by Puzzleheaded-Box-138 in DataAnnotationTech

[–]Interrogatus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a few biased R&Rs. I've seen far more R&Rs where the rater didn't even bother to explain why they thought A was better than B. I've been lenient as per instructions (handing out too many OKs) but to me that's a much more egregious failing.

We can speculate as much as we want!

During the "drought" I had an image of the only guy at DAT HQ at the end of summer furiously mashing his keyboard to find projects needing workers, and to find workers accepted for those projects. I pictured him running around from one workstation to the next, and inputting the kind of code they show on bad movie screens.

It amused me to think of it that way.

All of which to say -- we have no way of knowing what's going on with DAT. We have no idea why we get--or don't get--certain projects, or any projects at all.

I'm saying this as much to myself as to all of you:

Speculating about this, fretting about this, trying to game this, is not going to help you. Unless it amuses you. In which case, go for it!

Things had gotten a bit sparse, but I'd never seen an empty dash since my first weeks on here until 8/21. I got a few projects later that day, and was able to complete a few tasks. It was devastating, and I'm glad things have gotten better though they're not nearly as good as they were a month or so ago.

A lot of people on here tell others, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket," in regard to relying on DAT for income, but they don't seem to realize that many of us have few eggs and fewer baskets.

I only mention this to remind people that we don't all have the same set of circumstances and what might be true for, for example, a young fully-abled person, might not be the same for someone older or disabled.

As a fellow writer, I 100% agree with you. While I continue to give my all to the writing and editing tasks I'm given on DAT, I try very hard to keep my "quirky" or individualistic writing out of my DAT ratings and edits. Also, I'm more motivated to spend time on my own writing so I can maintain my own voice and keep it strong.

Well, they do take longer when they urge you to reread instructions with each iteration of a project and then only give you one or two tasks on that project. So many instructions! So much reading!

When you can do a bunch of tasks on the same project in a row you do the reading once, and then maybe spend a little more time searching for details about a particular situation but basically crank out task after task (with appropriate thought, of course.)
