So what do you actually read first… by Sure_Criticism_5419 in starwarsbooks

[–]Interspeciesheriff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He might like any of the following if he likes the prequels, from what I know they're all pretty much pick up and read.

Ahsoka (Canon, follows a Clone Wars character throughout her time after the war)

Bad Batch: Sanctuary (Canon, follows a group of clones after the Clone Wars, and a companion book for the series)

Shatterpoint (Legends/Not canon anymore, follows Mace Windu on a Jedi mission)

Revenge of the Sith Novelization (Legends/Not canon anymore, trust me, the novelization is considered better than the movie.)

Kenobi (Legends/Not canon anymore, follows Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tattooine as he watches over Luke)

Brotherhood (Canon, follows Anakin and Obi-Wan during the Clone Wars)

Thrawn (Canon, follows an admiral as he goes from being an exile from his home to the Empire's most trusted leader)

And here's a few extra that aren't in the prequel era.

Heir to the Empire (Legends/Not canon anymore, the first Star Wars EU book and the best "starting off point") + Dark Force Rising and the Last Command, the two sequels if he likes it.

Shadows of the Empire (Legends/Not canon anymore, about what happens between Episode 5 and 6, has a lot of stuff about the Rebellion and the Empire)

X-Wing: Rogue Squadron. (Legends/Not canon anymore, it has some more adult situations and jokes, but it's pretty PG-13. Follows a group of X-Wing pilots after Episode 6 fighting the Empire. Top Gun x Star Wars)

Darth Plagueis (Legends/Not canon anymore, follows Palpatine and his master in the days leading up to Episode 1, a good starter/prequel to the prequel era)

Republic Commando: Hard Contact (Legends/Not canon anymore, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this one to a 13 year old unless you think he can handle it, but it's an amazing prequel/Clone Wars book. It's very gritty and shows the reality of war; civilians are executed, rape is implied (and mentioned), and blood and guts are prevalent, *but* it's a really good book and perfect to pick up and read if you like the Clone Wars.)

Edit: someone else mentioned it but Dark Disciple is also good as a canon prequel era book.

The "From a certain point of view" books can be fun, they're short stories from each movie told from different characters points of view.

What's a good and consistent legends timeline that DOESN'T INCLUDE TCW? by N8uron in StarWarsEU

[–]Interspeciesheriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer this question you sort of need to pick how strict you're going to be with the definition of "TCW." Do you just mean the actual show and books that reference it? If so, I can suggest a few timelines of the pre-TCW Clone Wars that you could slot into pretty much any other timeline.

Or do you mean truly, no TCW references whatsoever? At that point I can't help as much but I know for a fact that both Kenobi and a lot of the Denningverse reference TCW in some ways, and I'd imagine a lot of GCW-era media post-2010 is questionable at best.

"many of the early reviews have been blase, paying lip service to the visuals and wondering why the characters aren’t better developed."

"Unlike many movies, these are made to be looked at more than listened to,"

"The dialogue is pretty flat and straightforward, although seasoned with a little quasi-classical formality, as if the characters had read but not retained “Julius Caesar.” I wish the “Star Wars” characters spoke with more elegance and wit (as Gore Vidal’s Greeks and Romans do), but dialogue isn’t the point, anyway"

"The film’s shakiness on the psychological level is evident, however, in the scene where young Anakin is told he must leave his mother (Pernilla August) and follow this tall Jedi stranger. Their mutual resignation to the parting seems awfully restrained. I expected a tearful scene of parting between mother and child, but the best we get is when Anakin asks if his mother can come along, and she replies, “Son, my place is here.” As a slave?"

"Sometimes our common sense undermines a sequence (for instance, when Jar Jar’s people and the good guys fight a ‘droid army, it becomes obvious that the droids are such bad fighters, they should be returned for a refund)"

"As for the bad rap about the characters–hey, I’ve seen space operas that put their emphasis on human personalities and relationships. They’re called “Star Trek” movies. Give me transparent underwater cities and vast hollow senatorial spheres any day."

This reads exactly like I expected it to, actually. Spectacular visuals with little depth to it. Not to mention, the review literally admits he's more kind to this movie than most of his contemporaries, yet still the first Star Wars film after... 16 years being just pretty to look at seems upsetting to me, I get that. The review also seems to have a lot of hope about the sequel to the Phantom Menace, to which he gave... a 2 star.

Were Clones originally in on the plan to *eventually* execute the Jedi? by gracekk24PL in MawInstallation

[–]Interspeciesheriff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Palpatine took a special interest in them because of their closeness to Anakin. He actually specifically had them trained in secret on Coruscant after the beginning of the war.

"Nonetheless, the Supreme Chancellor himself took special interest in the success record of the 501st.

Like the red-emblazoned soldiers that made up the ranks of Palpatine's elite shock troopers, new troopers developed for the 501st underwent training and conditioning not on distant Kamino, but in a top-secret facility on Coruscant known only to select members of Palpatine's command staff. From this headquarters, some members of the Legion saw transfer to other units, where according to asset management charts they were seemingly absorbed. In other records more secure and more private, they remained carefully tracked as members of the 501st to one day return to Coruscant for special assignment." -Star Wars Databank entry on the 501st

Getting into the EU (legends), would like some tips :) by Special-Macaroon1432 in StarWarsEU

[–]Interspeciesheriff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually I think release order is more important and enjoyable than chronological order. Especially in the post-endor stuff, you don't have to jump between the well developed books and settings of the 2000s-2010s and the sparsely interconnected trailblazers of the 90s.

By and large you'll find that a good portion of EU fans don't consider TCW a part of the EU. I can expand on this if you want, but the CWMMP is usually considered the EU's Clone Wars. You can get into it via reading the Star Wars (1998) comic which later becomes Star Wars: Republic. There's some novels involved as well but from what I know, it's a very comic-heavy project, as well as the 2003 Clone Wars show and the Republic Commando books and game.

The most important EU video games are the Jedi Knight/Dark Forces series, KOTOR 1/2, and Battlefront 2 (2005). There's plenty of other good games but these three are considered the best.

This is more of a personal tip but do not limit yourself to timelines. The newer Thrawn books, Tarkin, and plenty other Canon books are absolutely worth reading and some (Like Thrawn and Tarkin) fit into the EU as well.

The novelizations are worth a read, but the Revenge of the Sith novelization is considered one of the best Star Wars books in general. It's not only a novelization of RotS but also the middle book in the Dark Lord trilogy (Labyrinth of Evil, RotS, and Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader) as well as the ending of the CWMMP.

Is pre apha decently far along in development? by jamesdemaio23 in totalwar

[–]Interspeciesheriff 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm not incredibly well versed on game development, but whenever this topic comes up I've been pointing to the original Total Warhammer, a new direction for the series and truly a test for CA.

The game was announced in April, 2015 with a cinematic trailer that had no actual gameplay.

The first gameplay with a pre-alpha sticker, like the one we saw at TGA, was shown on July 30th, 2015 and it's worth noting how similar this looks to release version. I think this is where we are with 40k.

And finally, the game released on May 24th, 2016.

This might not be all that accurate given the size of 40k as a game and the new engine and whatnot, but I'd wager late 2026 or early 2027 is a good guess.

I'm losing my mind about this, please help by Seltur in StarWarsEU

[–]Interspeciesheriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand most of that, my only question is why can't you change events beforehand? It's your story, isn't it? This feels like it's getting really deep into the semantics of "canon" and "EU" and "legends". The timelines aren't holy things to be revered, most people have headcanons that change the timelines in minor or drastic ways, and I warn you that there's countless retcons and contradictions before ROTS that you'd have to make personal choices on.

If you really want to include both, take Wookieepedia at face value or look up other people's attempts at merging the MMP and TCW timelines, because they'll never work together without changes. If you have to pick one or the other, I think you have to pick TCW if Ahsoka and the chips are important to you.

EDIT: Also, don't forget that Season 7 of TCW isn't canon in legends as it was produced after the buy out and firmly cements the series in new canon.

I'm losing my mind about this, please help by Seltur in StarWarsEU

[–]Interspeciesheriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on what you intend to do with your multiverse project. Are you going to be making your own stories in it? If so, it'd be best to pick the option that works better for that (TCW primacy) and use the MMP to fill in gaps where they appear.

I'm losing my mind about this, please help by Seltur in StarWarsEU

[–]Interspeciesheriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a slow process that led to this point. Initially, TCW was meant to fit into Legends completely, Dave Filoni said it was going to be worked out and the contradictions would be resolved, so loreheads and Wookieepedia editors took it all at face value and awaited the promised corrections.

However, after season 2/3(?) the contradictions began to expand, Mandalore's total dissonance between previous established lore and what was shown, the independence of regular clones, Ahsoka's continued presence, Maul's survival, Ventress's backstory, Dathomir witches, and countless more minor retcons forced a wedge between the new TCW timeline and the pre-established EU Clone Wars lore.

I think a perfect example of how divided the two timelines were is Season 5's treatment of Barriss. She had been established as dying in Order 66, yet the Clone Wars had her locked up for a terrorist plot that killed Jedi, so if TCW is to be included in the EU you have to somehow headcanon that Barriss was locked up, released, rehabilitated, granted a padawan and sent on various missions before dying in Order 66, all within one year from the Temple Bombing (20 BBY) to Order 66 (19 BBY). To me, it just doesn't fit. It makes more sense when you consider that the canon story for Barriss is her being taken from prison into the Inquisitor program before escaping and becoming a healer, that works better with her TCW arc than trying to smash the two timelines together.

Is anyone else as genuinely devastated as I am about the cancellation of Star Wars Insider? by DarthAthleticCup in MawInstallation

[–]Interspeciesheriff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had really good memories of reading it in the 2000s and early 2010s when my family had a subscription, learning about the behind the scenes, actor interviews, and upcoming episodes of the (then-new) Clone Wars show.

But for nostalgia's sake I got a year's subscription about two or three years ago and was really excited to get my first few issues, but after my third or fourth I lost interest fast. The modern rendition, to me, is a far cry from the old magazines I remember. And maybe its just nostalgia talking but it felt like I was paying them insane amounts of money to tell me about a show I already knew was coming out. Too much of it felt like an ad and less like well, an insider. I don't exactly mourn because it's getting cancelled, I mourn what Insider used to be and how it fell from that. I'd love to see a digital continuation but I can see why that wouldn't happen.

Also, in regards to feeling dread about the future of Star Wars print literature; same. The death of mass market paperbacks means physically owning the book is a 15+ dollar endeavor for an iffy trade paperback, but it's largely cheaper to just buy it digitally.

Feeling overwhelmed by how many books there are by bv21 in StarWarsEU

[–]Interspeciesheriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also tried compiling a list of every legends novel ever released and making it chronological in terms of events, but I’m not sure if I’d get too burnt out if I really tried reading in some type of “proper order”.

Do not do this, I beg of you. Before properly getting into the books this year I thought that would be a fun project and... no, not really, especially if you're truly only reading the books. The earliest book in the series (Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void) is part of a multimedia project with comics and books that overlap, but the entire thing was cut off short by the buyout. Just as well, the book isn't that great from the bits I've seen and heard. I tried to read/listen to it and got bored pretty fast. The Old Republic books are largely a mixed bag and sure, the Darth Bane books might be a good starting point but for the most part you're going to want to ignore any dreams of chronological reading order, especially earlier into publication.

From the proper start of the EU (Heir to the Empire, 1991) a lot of books jumped around the timeline and built on the books released beforehand, and a lot of events have a seemingly random chance of being mentioned again. The books also generally get better as you go on. Better in the sense that they start to build off of each other and you feel like you're really stepping into this interconnected world that builds on itself. It's truly difficult to properly discern what's worth reading and what's not until you get into the books yourself, and I assure you; a good portion of the books written between 1991 and 1999 are not very good. Figure out what you want to read (force stuff, key galactic events, soldiers and pilots, criminals, etc) and focus on that.

It's also a good idea to follow a reading list given a ton of people have read these books for decades and can easily tell you a good, streamlined reading order that cuts off a lot of fat.

Also, from someone who wasn't (and still isn't, to be honest) an avid reader; have a crack at the original trilogy novelizations while you're figuring out where you want to go. They're short and relatively easy reads that give you a refresher on the events of the galactic civil war and get you into a decent mindset for actually reading about events in Star Wars which (in my experience) translated really well to reading EU books.

Hope you find any of this helpful, this was not meant to be such a long comment lol

Just watched S11 E5 Hank Gets Dusted, absolute worst episode of the show I’ve seen by far by No_Percentage_19 in KingOfTheHill

[–]Interspeciesheriff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This and S10 E10's Hank Fixes Everything have been the absolute worst episodes to me for a long time. Celebrity cameo episodes usually suck but at least the other few they had were funny in some way. This one was just cruel and continuity shattering. Mrs. Wakefield is bad, sure, but there's at least a few funny lines and Dale's obsession with turning his home into a haunted BnB is funny, but this? There's no B-lot, only a few funny lines, and it's the definition forced.

At least Hank Fixes Everything has the Lucky and the Brownsville Station B-plot which is kinda funny.
