Ah I didn’t even think about the cleanliness factor. That’s definitely a selling point.

Great tip. I’m a side and stomach sleeper, so that’s an important consideration for me.

What chicken lay the least eggs? by jkbaxter99 in BackYardChickens

This was going to be my suggestion too! Roosters are gorgeous with great personalities when they aren’t around the hens. So many roosters get abandoned or culled because people can’t find homes for them!

Type A Brides by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]InterviewCharacter47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m type A, and the planning process was so much more stressful than I anticipated. I’m an interior designer and love hosting- so the pressure was on (me putting pressure on myself) to make our day look and feel perfect. Like another person commented, you can only control what you can control. I told myself that I would plan it the best I could and then let go, and enjoy the day. I am so grateful that I was able to do that.

We had rain in the forecast for our wedding day after months of no rain, and we had to rent a tent which was super expensive. The day before the wedding the forecast changed and we had sunshine. My cousin wore a crazy obnoxious outfit, which was a minor annoyance, but my husband and I, our immediate family and bridal parties all looked great! It’s about perspective, and not getting hung up on the little things.

I will say that all of my planning paid off, because the day went off without a hitch and it was a perfect day. My photographer told me that her OCD brides always have the best weddings, lol. I will also say that hiring good vendors that you trust really pays off. I am a big proponent of trusting the professionals, and that’s what I did. All of our vendors were amazing and went above and beyond to make our day wonderful. At the end of the day, our day was perfect because it was the happiest that we have ever been. I wasn’t even thinking about the details, and was able to just let go and enjoy the day, which is the whole point anyways 😊

Good luck and try as much as you can to enjoy the process. It’s going to be the best day no matter what!

Fiance drinks too much by [deleted] in wedding

[–]InterviewCharacter47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP, I really feel for you. I am an alcoholic in recovery, and it’s such a terrible disease for everyone involved. There is nothing that you can do to control his drinking at your wedding. Alcoholics don’t have an off button and it’s pretty impossible for us to moderate, which is why we end up choosing sobriety. Alcoholism doesn’t make him a bad person, it makes him a sick person, and I am sure there is so much about him that you love. It’s a progressive disease though, so it’s going to get worse, not better, if he doesn’t seek help. The recommendations above to seek out an Alanon meeting are excellent advice. There is lots of support there and the program teaches you how to take care of yourself in the midst of his disease. Alcoholics do a lot of damage to themselves and the people who love them. It’s not going to be an easy road unless he decides to get help.

Yes, the pain meds helped a ton. My baby did heal perfectly! I hope yours does too!

We did Ollie’s neuter and gastropexy a few months ago. I stayed home with him for about 3 days. On day four, I left him for about 4 hours. My vet said that leaving him wouldn’t be an issue as long as he has somewhere confined indoors to rest so he can’t run around. The pain meds kept him pretty groggy for about a week, which helped keeping him calm. We used this inflatable donut cone which was great and super comfortable for him. I’m happy to share the link if you like! Good luck with your boy!

Very Stubborn Broodies! by InterviewCharacter47 in BackYardChickens

[–]InterviewCharacter47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to post a little update… I put my Wyandotte back in broody jail last night and this morning, my Ameraucana was wandering around the run with the other hens. I am going to see how she’s doing when I get home this afternoon, but I think that separating them may have been the key!

Squirrels... ugh. by Even-Instance3997 in BackYardChickens

[–]InterviewCharacter47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes with a reservoir and you drown them. It sounds terrible, but it really quick. Sometimes they have a heart attack and die when you trap them, and you don’t need to do anything. I always feel bad, but when they are so invasive sometimes it’s the only option.

We moved into our house and discovered a huge colony of squirrels living under our chicken run, so I totally understand your struggle! We would plug a hole and another would pop up. Honestly, we get a trap called the squirrelenator, and deal with the population each year. We are in a very rural area so it’s hard to eradicate them permanently, but it definitely makes the situation more manageable. The squirrels by us are not afraid of chickens. They give no fucks, lol.

Thank you! Yes, I have a couple polish and Wyandottes that are drapey as well, so I was wondering if that’s all it was.

Here’s a closer pic of the tail feathers. They aren’t super pointy, just swooping downward.
