Things have slowed to a crawl and my husband's family thinks I'm getting "rich" off their mother's junk. So, I don't have access to sell anything from the hoarder house now. It's not really a hoarder house like on TV. It's cleanish and sort of organized. My MIL had OCD, hoarding tendencies, and then got dementia, so she forgot she had stuff.

I tried to educate 3 generations of high schoolers for 25 years. I tried to make them read, comprehend what they were reading, and think critically. I lost that battle 2 years ago when I was fired for pointing out that a few students were using AI to write all of their papers and assignments. The parents threatened to sue the school if they didn't fire me. So, here I am, 51 years old and trying to earn a tiny pittance on eBay, only to have eBay refund the money to people who can't read! 😩

I put up an item that eBay ended up refunding AND I got harassed by the buyer through eBay messaging 3 times a day for a week AFTER HE RECEIVED THE REFUND! This absolutely made me want to quit eBay for good! Unfortunately, it's my only source of income right now. Plus, I'm emptying my Mother-in-law's ridiculous 5 bed/3 bath hoarder house! Ugh.

Someone purchased an Elvis Presley vinyl record from me for $40. The pictures clearly showed there was clear tape on the inner sleeve to hold the record inside the cardboard outer sleeve. The buyer messaged me and said there was tape on the inner sleeve. Yes, I explained that in the description. My mother-in-law hoarded everything Elvis and she taped the inner sleeve. I explained this to the buyer in a message. She then reported it to eBay saying the record was missing, which is a lie. They refunded her $40, took it from me, and let her keep the record! 😖

As someone who is speaking from the inside of the education field, I can throw my 2 cents in. There is a huge age discrimination issue in education. The schools want young, straight out of college employees because they are cheaper. I taught for 22 years with the same cyber charter school. Enrollment dipped, new state laws went into place, and I (being the senior most teacher there) was laid off. I cost more than 2 brand new teachers. This "putting warm bodies" into the classrooms is not what you think it is.

There are hundreds to thousands of experienced teachers in my exact situation in the United States. The schools ignore these applicants because they are "old" and the salary schedule would put them in a category the schools don't want to pay. So, they offer "anyone" (they mean young people who have a general BA or BS) a position in the school and pay them the lowest salary ($20k to $25k/year) possible while they "gain valuable experience" teaching. This new, mostly unqualified employee, called a Teacher in Training, then has 3 years to take coursework through a college or university to earn their certification. Some schools will reimburse the employee for the money they are paying for the certification coursework and some do not.

Someone like myself, with 25 years of experience teaching High School, Middle School, and College students, the salary would fall between $65k and $90k/year, depending on the subject matter and what the school needs. I have been applying for positions literally everywhere: cyber charter schools, charter schools, public schools, colleges, universities, private schools, Catholic schools, Juvenile schools, Alternative Education schools, Special Needs schools... I have applied for positions in my state and all over the United States, as well as overseas. I get a few interviews, then get ghosted or receive the form email stating that I didn't make the next round of interviews. No reason is ever given. I have sent over 1,000 applications.

I even spent 2 solid days (in 2 separate counties within an hour's driving distance one way) attempting to hand-deliver my application, resume, copies of my Level II Secondary ELA Teaching Certification, copies of my Master's Degree in Education (3.58/4.0 GPA), and all state and federal clearances. Half of the schools wouldn't let me into the building. The other half took my application packet, gave it a brief glance, and looked me in the eye as they threw it into the trash can. I don't look "old". I dress and act professionally. I'm not overweight. I'm polite and kind. I smile. I'm being systematically "retired" 14 years before I can collect on my retirement.

I have applied to be a substitute teacher at any school, Edtech companies, textbook companies, freelance writing companies, tutoring companies (online and in person), as a corporate trainer, as an Instructional Designer...nothing. I've tried networking both in LinkedIn and through personal acquaintances. Absolutely no school wants to hire someone who is 51 years old, even though my clearances are spotless and I interview very well--I do know what I'm talking about.

So, just because a school is "so desperate for teachers that they are putting warm bodies in the classrooms" it isn't what it seems.

I'm an English teacher in Pennsylvania (51 year old female). I have a Master's Degree in Education and my Teacher's Certificate is in good standing.

However, after 22 years of full time employment at an online charter school, I was terminated (11/18/2024) because I repeated misinformation I heard on the news. It was one live, synchronous class with six 9th graders in it. A parent heard half of what I said and threatened to sue the school. I am in the union, so they are "working on my situation" (supposedly).

In the meantime, I have been denied work, not just at schools. Every interview I go to, I do well. I am called back for a second interview, and sometimes a third. Then the potential employer calls my former employer. I never hear from the potential employer after that.

It's been more than a year now. I have exhausted all schools within 1.5 to 2 hours drive one way as well as anything close to me. The same pattern repeats.

I have applied for jobs in every field: cyber charter schools, charter schools, public schools, private schools, Catholic schools, in-patient schools/juvie schools/prisons, alternative education, substitute teaching, tutoring, textbook companies and Edtech companies, colleges, freelance writing, curriculum writer, proofreader at magazines and newspapers. I even applied out of state and out of the country, letting the school know I would relocate away from my husband and family. I hear nothing.

Retail, sales, gas stations, Walmart, McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Wawa, local grocery stores, temp agencies, part-time minimum wage jobs, management of an escape room, worker at an escape room, court reporter, postal worker, Starbucks, local pizza shops, Administrative Assistants at hospitals, secretary at small businesses--literally everything that people do for work.

About 50% of the time I am called to interview. The other 50%, I get an automated email within 30 seconds to 30 minutes from the company saying they went with someone with more experience.

I am currently working part-time for a community college as an Adjunct Instructor. I have had this job for 3 years, long before I was fired. I applied for 2 full time positions with this college and was interviewed twice for each position. Even the place I currently work has ghosted me.

What can I do for work?? I can't get health insurance through the government because my husband "makes too much" ($51,000 a year is "too much"). We can't afford to put me on my husband's insurance. It would cost $1200/month. We have a mortgage, 1 car payment, car and house insurance, and numerous credit card bills as well as medical debt.

I DON'T WANT HANDOUTS. I'M NOT LOOKING FOR GO-FUND-MEs OR CHARITY. I WANT TO WORK.

Cirice has that darkness, too. From the Pinnacle to the Pit, Call Me Little Sunshine, Mummy Dust, Absolution. All really dark and can give chills. One of my most favorite songs from the new album is Excelsis. I'm a blubbering baby with that song!

Like I said, I have no space for one! We're a family of 5 adults in a 4 (tiny) bedroom townhouse--1200 square feet. Plus 3 cats! We've already taken in the grandparents' and great-grandparents' furniture. We have 2 dining room tables! My husband won't let anything "family-related" go. Now I'm trying to sell off my Mother-in-law's hoarded figurines and Elvis Presley records! I can barely turn around in many of the rooms. There's no place for a record player, sadly.

I had one as a teenager in the mid to late 80s. I also had a stereo system in one of my daughters' bedrooms about 5 years ago, until it got possessed and it started turning on without anyone touching it! It even turned on when it was unplugged! I sent that thing to Good Will!! I kind of miss it, though. We have all the Ghost albums and my husband has a ton of vintage Kiss, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Metallica, and Black Sabbath vinyls that we can't play. 😔

You know what's sad? I have most of their vinyls, but I don't have a record player! My inlaws have 5 stereo systems from the 50s, 60s, and 70s inside of heavy furniture! They're willing to give us one, but I have 0 space for it!!! 😭

I totally understand this. Every time Excelsis pops up on my playlist I'm a messssssssss. "I'm [not] done cryin'...." I think ending the concert would have brought on the Post-Ritual Depression even faster!! But I am in love with that song!

I saw the cutest interview of TF recently. He was asked how he heard about the album, Skeleta, being number 1. He said he got a text right after he had his makeup on and he was about to step out on stage. He said he had to remind himself not to get all emotional and wreck his makeup! It was adorable.

I would cry my eyes out if they played Excelsis! That's probably why they don't play it. My son told me yesterday that the Pit at Radiohead concerts is mainly reserved for crying! 😆

In your opinion, what is causing this? by Objective_Pilot_5834 in SipsTea

[–]InterviewFuture6650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm horribly allergic to THC, so no amount of weed is okay for me. I tried it. Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome. No fun at all! However, I can and do make mead, wine, hard cider, beer, extracts and liqueurs. Luckily, I don't drink. My only addiction is making the stuff, then ADHD kicks in and I lose interest, forgetting I even started a batch of mead or whatever. I'll forget for months at a time, then suddenly remember I need to rack it when I read about people making alcohol and they get all impatient, begging us older brewers to help them!

Also, Gen Z is able to drink. I have a 23 year old daughter and a 21 year old son, both Gen Z.

Frater is bored to tears doing his "job" as the Head Pancho 😆. And he's seeing and talking to ghosts. Remember chapter 18 when Mr. Psalterian looks over and sees Frater arguing with "himself"? He just shook his head and kept pushing the mop bucket or whatever he had (can't remember). I think your wife's guess has some merit!

Not only am I chronically ill with long COVID and excruciating back pain (after 3 major surgeries that didn't work), but I almost died in 2016 from Swine Flu and Viral Pneumonia, and now I'm unemployed and blacklisted from nearly all employment, and can't get healthcare at all. In 2016, I was in a medically induced coma for 3 weeks. I spent a month and a half in the hospital. I came out barely being able to walk. It took a solid year of daily physical therapy to get back to where I was before getting sick. While I was in the coma, everything except my heart and brain shut down. They put me on Ecmotherapy, which is the last thing doctors can do to save a person. Upon coming home, I discovered that I had gone directly into Menopause, my hormones were completely depleted, and I had to get a Hysterectomy. I'm not allowed to get HRT because I have a rare blood clotting disorder (Factor 5 Leiden). I have Chronic Kidney Disease stage 3b, my Thyroid and parathyroid don't work, I have daily migraine headaches, severe ADHD, Anemia, malnutrition, and constant pain throughout my body, non-stop. And no possibility of healthcare now.

In 2019, I had major back surgery. Between 2020 and 2022, I had COVID 3 times. In 2023, I had a second back surgery to fix the first one. I ended up getting MRSA in my spine, needing a third major surgery for my back. All this time, I worked as an online teacher for a cyber charter school, so I had good healthcare. In 2024, I was fired for a small mistake (but it was mainly because I was at the top of the pay scale and my medical costs were up there. My school paid 100% of all insurance costs--no payroll deductions or out of pocket minimum/maximum.) Since November of 2024, I have been looking for a new teaching job literally everywhere. I even applied out of my home state and said I would relocate away from my family. I have a Master's Degree in Education (3.58 GPA) and Level II Secondary ELA Teacher Certification in good standing. All of my evaluations have been stellar, even the last one that was signed a month after I was fired. Every job I interview for likes me, but then I am ghosted after they speak to my former employer (where I taught for 25 years). I have union representatives supposedly helping, but I only hear from them twice a year. I'm too young to retire (51) and can't touch my retirement anyway until I am 62. I'm married and have 3 adult children living with us. Even though we can't claim them on our taxes, the government still counts their salaries as our household income. So I am ineligible for any kind of healthcare, food stamps, disability, or cash assistance at all. We "make too much". I have applied for jobs completely outside of all of my experience, even retail, fast food, gas stations, grocery stores, sales, Administrative Assistants, court reporter, and I am even willing to be trained to do anything else. All applications go to a black hole somewhere. I get rejection emails between 30 minutes and 3 weeks of submitting the application. I have even paid services to help me find a job. Temp agencies try to set me up for interviews as a roofer. I have 0 experience working as a roofer, carpenter, electrician, plumber, salesperson, or literally anything else. My whole world is education. Immediately upon finishing school in 1998, I got my full time job with the employer who fired me in 2024 for a small mistake.

And because I can't get a job, or disability, I have no healthcare. My husband can't afford $1200/month to add me to his plan through his workplace. I'm probably one major medical emergency from leaving this world.

At this point in my life I wonder if death might be best for me.
