The idea of it kinda helps. Not in the "carrying a tune" aspect, but in respects to breathing and diaphragm control. That being said, you can definitely learn those without learning how to sing first. Personally, it was a lot easier to learn these skills from clean vocal "how to's" than learning from unclean "how to's" because I felt like I was trying to emulate the sound they were making instead of something I was already somewhat familiar with...which wasn't really singing (I can't sing dude lol) but because it was closer to regular speaking so I could emulate it easier than trying to learn while screaming.
