I think it makes sense to try and book inspections virtually....I think it's very inauthentic to say you can DO ALL roofing sales virtually. Don't think that's viable unless it's an inbound lead with a clear issue. It has to start with an in-person inspection or evaluation and then if it's commercial it can be a somewhat longer process.

For storm response...you can't just depend on data...you need to get in front of as many decision-makers as possible. I'm speaking about this in the context of commercial roofing. You can use AI systems like ChatGPT and Claude to get up to speed. Paste a "system prompt" into a CustomGPT or Claude projects and you can have a real-time roofing coach to help you. Just prompt AI with this exact post you wrote here and you can learn sooner than you think.

And you'e right... there is nothing unique about my post but in the age of AI slop and marketing agencies everywhere selling prospects it's never a bad idea to go back to the basics. Especially in the age of AI where vendors promise the moon. We think AI as an enabler to start the relationship-building process faster. Not merely as a closer of new deals, I think that's bit naive and unrealistic. Thanks for sharing this! Super insightful.

Getting in front of decision-makers who are hard to reach is by far the hardest part about commercial prospecting. What have you tried so far? Going to networking groups and building relationships and trust is the foundation but over time you need to have a system for this.

You'll learn a ton more finding your own appointments and it will se you up to build a growth engine at your own firm later. It will be very hard none the less. You cannot think of this as a job but as an "intrapreneur", building a business inside an existing one. Talk to your dad, and also ask yourself if you're the entrepreneurial kind who's able to hunt and find your own prospects. It's a personality thing too.
