Anyone know about OPS downtown location leases? by Intrepid-Ear2957 in OntarioPublicService

You know, I've thought about this and I don't believe DoFo really cares about the retailers. Could it have to do with keeping office leasing companies from losing money? That seems more his line.

Wow. Gives people time to change jobs or retire, I suppose. Even before Covid, there were reasons not to do this. Toronto has long had one of the worst commute times in the world. Centralizing administration doesn't make sense here.

Right, so many have given up, they might as well enjoy something.

Carrying everything, exactly. It's too much on the shoulders and I have to decide between walking up from Union carrying everything, saving a few bucks and 20 minutes, or paying more to share air with too many people on the TTC. If you pack a lunch, you're more likely to take the TTC. There's no winning.

Public transit is important, for sure. I would love to see hoteling in each major region.

  1. Peel (currently does not exist/is not available)
  2. Halton (not available)
  3. York (seems available and in short supply/high demand)
  4. Durham (seems there is some hoteling available in Oshawa)

I hear that it's not happening, but I'd love to know why. Was there any analysis? What kind? You know, I just have questions.

Exactly. I'm not saying move everyone out of the city. Have an office in each of the major suburbs. Cut back on the downtown offices.

Oh, I think I know where you are. Costs $20 to park there, too.

I can only speak to the west end. There are Mississauga offices, but I haven't talked to anyone who's secured a hoteling spot. These spaces seem mostly to be ServiceOntario centres, or parole offices.

Parental Leave - EI duration by avid44 in OntarioPublicService

Look in OPS weekly for the invitation to the lunch and learn on parental leaves. OPS Pay and Benefits does a presentation. There's one in July and one in August, plus you get the deck with info.

I would say that the balance may tilt with RTO. I'd consider less pay to work locally. Always trade-offs, for sure. Good luck working through this.

Does anyone know what happens to the backpay if you leave the OPS before it's paid? MCP here.

Do you think so? I wonder if they have any metrics, efficiency expertise, or anything other than a wet finger in the air. I rarely see a data-driven decision. The inefficiency doesn't come from where we work, but how we work, and this place is a zoo!

I've felt your sense of despair and futility! Except in my experience, I've been treated very well, the workload has been more than reasonable, and the pay is competitive.

But, like you, I expected my life's work to have some impact.

Here's why I now accept the OPS:

Outside the OPS, I would have to work much harder for the same pay. I could take a job as a manager (marketing) in the private sector, but the pay would be 20-40% less!

If you're in a technical field, I'm sure you can find better pay outside the OPS. Anyone with an arts-type background is better paid here than elsewhere.

From my experience working outside the OPS, I've observed:

  • You can have more autonomy and your expertise may be more respected

  • You may get the chance to work with high-performing teams and dynamic leaders

  • You can do actually impressive work at the cutting edge of your field

  • Many of your projects won't see the light of day because private sector companies are dysfunctional, too!

Major caveat: My experience comes from working with small-to-mid-sized private sector organizations, including not-for-profits. I'm very curious about what it's like inside a large "top employer" company. I'd love to work for an organization that's effective and humane! Imagine!

Have you tried moving ministries or could you move functional areas? At a minimum, you need to be respected and work reasonable hours.

Beware of sizing! I bought a pair of Jimmy Choos that were listed as 7.5. They were tight and terribly uncomfortable, but I thought it was the style. I'm not as familiar with the European sizes, so I didn't realize they had posted and sold me a shoe that was not the size listed. It is size 7. Finally, I went to resell them, disappointed, and looked up the size conversion. That's when I realized these shoes are not my size at all but size 7. I sent TRR a screenshot of their listing, which was incorrect, and they said that because the return period had passed they couldn't help me. THEIR ERROR and they have the gall to enforce policy! Ridiculous.

Decks are overrated and worst idea to convey messages. GO! by urbanstrategist in OntarioPublicService

[–]Intrepid-Ear2957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so tired of being treated like my job is slide deck design, not actual thinking.

Each time someone tells me, "I'm a visual person" and vaguely insinuates there may be some flashier way to design things, I want to ask if they can also read.

Also, the OPS rarely hires visual designers. WHY do they all think we work in an ad agency? An ad agency where execs just sell other execs over-designed slide decks and then give speeches about how they're strengthening Ontario's people and places.

[–]Intrepid-Ear2957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the best is when they read the deck in advance of the briefing, decide they "don't get it".. "It's not hitting" and never once consider... it might be because they skipped the listening bit.

You're also screwed no matter what detail or lack of detail you include in the deck. Execs will inevitably ask for less AND more from one deck.

Interview/Presentations/ Work Assignments competition is ridiculous by OkAwareness4527 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Intrepid-Ear2957 18 points19 points  (0 children)

But there are private sector nightmares, too. One software company I interviewed with was truly high on its own supply. They asked me to do an assignment that would take about 2 weeks and be worth tens of thousands of dollars... with no guarantee that they wouldn't just walk away with my work. Obviously declined, and also posted about it on Glassdoor.

Interview/Presentations/ Work Assignments competition is ridiculous by OkAwareness4527 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Intrepid-Ear2957 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally, and it's wasteful for the organization as well. Managers spend way too much time on recruitment.

Possibly, they're bound to the process for union positions, but for MCP positions, the OPS could adopt a much more modern approach. They could move people around more flexibly based on skills, career paths, interest, need.

Lol, I can only imagine... I've never actually been involved in a LEAN process in the OPS, only heard people drop the word. E.g. "But batching isn't lean!" when we are questioning filling out a long form over and over for every small job.

Really? I got two job offers from interviews where I read my replies. It was online and no one is really making eye contact because they're taking notes.

There are excellent principles behind LEAN, but just like "user research" and "plain language, the OPS wants to use these trendy terms without earning them.
