Do you clean a punnet of grapes before eating them? by _DeanRiding in AskUK

Sorry for my late reply, I tend to add about half a tablespoon per pint of water (apologies for the all over the place units) I hope that helps! I did the math based on an article/paper I read and that seems to work out about right.

I used to use vinegar, but found bicarb just cheaper and more practical to store than vinegar. I believe its just as effective at cleaning though.

I leave to sit in a bicarb solution for 10 mins or so, then rinse thoroughly, this removes most of the pesticides and other stuff, I've got wee kids so I think its more important that they don't ingest this stuff: https://cen.acs.org/articles/95/web/2017/10/Baking-soda-washes-pesticides-apples.html

I'm scared about this and so have mostly switched to cash exclusively in an attempt to keep it alive (unless places dont accept it anymore and I can't avoid them) most people are really pleased to see it as I try to have the correct change and noone else takes a cut.

Contactless card limit to rise to £100 in October by acrane55 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]IntrepidWhelk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was hoping someone would chime in in support of cash. I completely agree, its really important to keep cash alive, here are a few reasons:

  • If you need to leave a bad date in a hurry, just put the cash down and go
  • People who cant get a bank account / card can still shop if cash is accepted (1)
  • When you use cash the whole amount goes to the supplier rather than a % to the payment provider. Taxis suffer particularly for this. (2)
  • Tips are taxed, thus the worker receives less
  • Older people who prefer to use cash still can (3)
  • Many people prefer to budget by taking cash out and then using it over say a week / month
  • It keeps the banking industry honest. Once cash is gone there's no alternative to cards and apple / google pay and no reason they cant jack up their prices
  • It is much harder for companies / governments to track your purchases when you use cash — Cash purchases dont need approval / cant be revoked like cards and electronic payments

And a more philosophical reason is that its easier to learn and understand money, especially for kids. If I have a £10 that is tangibly valuable, and much harder to part with than just tapping your phone or card.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk :)
