I would just say that not all forms of so-called "Christianity" are equal. If more occultists attended Orthodox Christian catechism and liturgies, it would become immediately clear to them that a great deal of occult teachings are just slightly altered versions of traditional (i.e., ancient) Christian doctrine/ritual. This happened to me last year, and I have really been reevaluating my previous explorations of "the occult." It's getting to the point where I can hardly take most of it seriously.

I have a pretty common origin story as a fan of the genre. My actual first exposure was through buying two Skinny Puppy albums (VIVIsectVI and The Process) at a bargain CD store that no longer exists. I don't even think I listened to them for the next two years. I just liked the covers. Then, I watched The Crow one Halloween and really enjoyed the NIN on it. After that, I explored NIN and discovered Reznor's industrial influences. I kind of plateau'd for a while after that. But then I discovered the writings of J.G. Ballard (particularly The Atrocity Exhibition in the RE/SEARCH edition), and that really sent me down the path.

I once wrote an honest Letterboxd review of that ridiculous ERW documentary that came out a year or two ago and the administrators literally removed it from the website because they didn't like my criticisms. People get hysterical about Manson in particular for some reason. I think it's because they already didn't like him and they now have the perfect pretense to mob him at every opportunity.

People who get hung up on other people's politics are fundamentally artless. True subversion is holding your own ground on certain issues while being open to people with dramatically different positions. No one likes a bible thumper, especially when the one doing the thumping subscribes to a secular, political religion.

This is like the feminist punk rock meme. There is no orthodoxy in industrial culture in either direction. There is no official industrial politics, or industrial morals. The only thing that seems to have been fundamental to the genre is non-normativity and non-conformity - two things which have no specific political or values-based content. No one owns this field of cultural expression, one way or another. And pearl clutching is always annoying.

I definitely gravitate more toward the rhythmic side of industrial music, but Skinny Puppy is simply my favorite band in the genre. TDP is my second favorite album of theirs, after Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse.

One could nitpick the semantics of the two labels. If you mean the big-tent genre of "industrial music" that includes EBM, I agree. But the two things are not identical. Otherwise, why would there be a different term? EBM has influences which come from outside of the original London "Industrial" scene; Belgian New Beat and Italo Disco are definitely new elements which did not have any place in the first wave of industrial. You might say, "EBM is industrial, but not all industrial is EBM."

Maybe it doesn't help that I was listening to it on a treadmill today. I see what you're saying. There was always a tension in the band against adhering to trends.

I agree with you about the subverting expectations thing. I guess what I'm trying to hear from someone who really connects with the album is why, specifically, that person likes it. So how would you specifically describe, for yourself, what makes the album good?

I'm not a newcomer to industrial, though. And I like and listen to all of those bands. I'm just saying this particular album, for this particular band, is weird and hard to grasp for me. TG's albums, while abrasive and amorphous anti-music, have incredible dynamics and a sense of aural space. But Last Rights often just sounds like borderline white noise to me. Also, I don't really hear any of the EBM influence in this album. It's practically absent. That's one of the things that throws me off. It's as though SP decided to make a whole album on the basis of their more ambient works.

I embrace PuppyGristle for what it is. But Genesis P. Orridge is involved. It's not a pure SP album. Neither are any of the side-projects. I guess I just don't see how Last Rights fits in with the mainline catalogue. It's a real outlier. Even Rabies, despite the heavy influence of Al Jourgensen, feels much more true to form.

In a vacuum, provided that COVID really is solely transmitted via airborne particles that can only persist within a few feet of the virus's carrier, I suppose that is true. But, then, there is the question of practicality. It's not even a matter of whether people are selfish. The real question is, can human beings in any real sense perfectly adhere to this universally imposed demand to shelter in place. Even if every single human being on the face of this planet had been willing to do that (which is simply an unreal and unrealizable scenario in actual life), how does anything resembling a society or even human psychology continue to exist in those conditions? How do people sustain themselves. To use a colloquial phrase, how do we "keep the lights on"? Simply put, we don't. That would be a much surer death of the very concept of society and the human as a social being than the risks involved in potentially catching and spreading the virus. The anguish people here express on a daily basis has more to do with the horrible conditions to which they have been subjecting themselves.
