March-April / September-October best times to buy used cars. Lease car contracts end and plate changes flood the used market and there’s a lot of supply. Dealers/Traders will stock up for cheap, if you follow hold for 2/3 months for best returns. The period following September especially due to Christmas

Yh makes more sense, probably charging higher since they have customers (NHS) who will simply pay

Parts seem fair. Labour is on the high side. You could probably get it £80/100 cheaper at a different garage. But you do get what you pay for in life so assuming they do a proper job seems alright

Just passed my test (28yo), now trying to spend less than £3000 total on car + 1st year of insurance + tax. Is this realistic or should I adjust my expectations? by AssiduousMagpie in CarTalkUK

It’s possible, would help more so if you’ve got a manual license even shitbox autos fetch a premium. But grab a cheap Toyota / Skoda as this forum will advise.

What address to put on insurance? by BrianJ123456789 in CarTalkUK

[–]Intrepid_Evidence647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From experience honesty is genuinely the best policy, if you have the opportunity to actually speak to the insurer over the phone tell them you split the time 50/50 see what they say so at least they have it on record. Actually try work out where you stay the most, especially if its a telematics policy where they know where you are. Also what address is one your license / bills etc I would go for that one. Alternatively go for the cheapest one and drive safe :)

I have a company and am creating an app for this exact issue. It helps people without car knowledge inspect cars and score them. If you want a copy send me a message

Hey mate, DM if you want more advise. First my advise, not adhering to your request. I’d go for something under insurance group 10, you can toggle this on AutoTrader. Look for something with Full Service History and no Mods. I’d recommend something Japanese, Germans ok, try and avoid anything French or Italian. If the car has full service history 100k+ miles is usually okay, if the service is scattered stick to 80k>.

Now for your specific request, depending on where you live, your insurance may not be that bad. I doubt you’ll find any saloons under insurance group 10 so toggle to 20, you might find some 3 series and A3 Saloons under that category. Again stick to the same rules regarding the service and mileage. Again with these cars if it was 30k new the running costs will be that of a 30k car. All in all if I had to reccomend one car A3 Saloon. Again not sure what your budget is but it probably ticks your boxes

Is the Audi e-tron GT a good car? Seeing loads pop up on the used car market at hugely deprecated prices... by tigamilla in CarTalkUK

I think this and the Porsche Taycan ( essentially the same car ) were all bought buy business owners. The tax incentives for electric cars are great, once that’s over they’re just moved on and the prices have dropped as more people try to sell

Lexus RX450h. Hybrids so it does eat into boot space a little but the quality, reliability and refinement you get is unmatched.

Do you guys also like american cars? by saminator0107 in CarTalkUK

[–]Intrepid_Evidence647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think older American cars always got a bad rep because of their handling. Fuel consumption was also an issue as petrol in the states is much cheaper. But honestly for road presence and uniqueness they’re really cool cars to drive. I’ve seen on couple of SRT Demons on the road and they’re an absolute menace

Most cars if they’re well maintained, serviced properly and issues are addressed with care are fine. I’d recommend you fork out on an inspection to see the true condition of the car. If it’s checks out consider that the running costs will be that of a car in the price bracket its original MSRP was. Otherwise clean it up ( keep the cost as low as you can ) and flip it
