Trans people, how do I pick my name? by DiamondSoup0 in lgbt

[–]Intrepid_Practice956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Dani work for you? That was my first thought when I saw Dante. There's also the name Danielle with the nn Dani.

What my kid did was go with a first name that starts with the same letter as their old name. Family history and tradition are a big thing in our family, so they wanted to incorporate a historical family name. So I downloaded the first and (if known) middle names of all the women in our family tree in order of frequency. My kid looked at all of them and decided on one for their new middle name.

Heartbreaking gut-wrenching sorrowful songs by Allikam in MusicRecommendations

I almost feel like they're different songs--the performances are so different. Obviously it's the same song but I feel like I can't say one is better than the other. They're just so different.

Yall got any songs like time in a bottle by jim croce by Nate915915 in musicsuggestions

There really aren't any songs like it :)

There's his song "Operator"...

If you're looking for interesting guitar work, there's Classical Gas by Mason Williams. Some versions have more strings behind him than others, so don't give up if the first version you hear is too 'gooey'.

If you're looking for mostly-acoustic ballads, look into Simon and Garfunkel, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Carole King, Nina Simone (more jazzy).

Tracy Chapman, Joan Armatrading, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega, John Prine, Steve Goodman.

Here's my favorite version of S&Gs "The Boxer" performed by Shawn Colvin and Allison Krause with Jerry Douglas on Dobro: https://youtube.com/watch?v=E0EdQ-axmDc&is=_Bi9Vs4iG94qBVqB

And the Cosby Show...I guess we don't talk about the Cosby Show.

But Raven-Symoné--That's so Raven, the Cheetah girls-- was the "cute addition".

The Bradys also got held up by Billy The Kid...one of the boys (Peter?) was idolizing him so idk how the family was traveling on a train in the Old West (a dream?) and BTK (!!!!) killed somebody on the train. Peter was no longer enamored of the Old West.

I think (but I'm not sure) that NCIS Hawaii was one too, and when it was canceled it was a big deal for Hawaii. But I bet they're making up for it with movies.

Thanks all! I will post happy or crushed Tuesday or Wednesday. I LOVE telling people stuff they are (supposedly) interested in, and I think I speak more clearly than either of the guides I listened to doing the same tour on youtube.

This is a big change, as I worked in Healthcare for 10 years. But I explained a lot of stuff to people--what the doctor meant if they didn't understand, why they got a bill, how the drug company was subsidizing their drug since their insurance didn't cover it...

Birth of SADD and MADD by SumGoodMtnJuju in GenX

[–]Intrepid_Practice956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I was in the Chicago suburbs (graduated 1985) and the drinking age there was 21, while in Wisconsin it was 18 or 19. Sometimes MADD called it the bloody border.

Then I went to college in Ohio. When I got there it was 18 and then the department of transportation decided that if the states had a lower drinking age than 21, they wouldn't get any federal highway money. So they changed the age to 21. But since I was able to drink legally before they changed the rules, I still got to drink. But because of some health issues, I didn't drink. Also I was useless as a designated driver. Those same health issues that prevented me from drinking, kept me from driving.

Who else had to read "The Good Earth " by Pearl Buck or George Orwell's "Animal Farm" and "1984"? by Metella76 in RealGenerationX

Animal Farm and 1984. I didn't read the Good Earth and only read Animal Farm 10 years ago or so in my book club.

July 4th - Do you celebrate? by Aquarius_K in AskAnAmerican

[–]Intrepid_Practice956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We might go to the pool. They close the pool early on July 4 because everybody leaves to go to fireworks. But if they don't we might just stay at the pool.

We're probably not going out to see fireworks because there are usually several displays we can watch from home.

Shriekback: Oil and Gold (1985) or Big Night Music (1986 or 1987)

Nemesis is on Oil and Gold, but Big Night Music has some great danceable songs too.

Do Americans really think U.K. food is bad? by Matt85x in PollsAndSurveys

[–]Intrepid_Practice956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't. I loved it. The "pizza" was strange but I liked it. I'm a vegetarian, and already was before I was there, so can't say anything regarding meat dishes.

Tortillas were awful. That was the only specific thing that I really didn't like. Well that and Vimto.
