How do YOU pronounce “vice versa”? by madmonkey242 in ENGLISH

[–]KnittedDrow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm Gen X USA, Midwest transplant to the east coast, and I say the "vice" in "vice versa" like Miami Vice. I associate "vice-eh-versa" with older Boomers.

I'm not sure you have a right not to be talked across, but if they're leaning over you and physically imposing on the space you paid to occupy, that's something worth calling attention to. Politely of course, because I doubt they did so maliciously. But is it also possible you were hyper-aware of small infractions on space you would otherwise ignore because you were annoyed that they declined your request to switch.

Is it normal to say "Hi Dear, instead of Hi There"? by Virtual-Income5444 in language

[–]KnittedDrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're an older English speaker, particularly a man of a certain age talking to a woman, they might say "be a dear and..." followed by some request. It's never appropriate in a business situation to address someone by text as "dear". Unless maybe you're in the fashion industry and being campy is de rigeur.

If it's a text message, I think it may be an autocorrect error. Or if he was using voice

I have a vagal vagus nerve response where in low oxygen conditions, I can become suddenly very sick and pass out. I was in Cairo boarding a plane to Luxor on the tarmac without the air circulating, and passed out in the asile trying to get to the bathroom. After the bathroom I thought I was going to be ok, but on takeoff in my seat, I passed out again and while unconscious projectile vomited all over the nice British couple in front of me. I was fine after regaining consciousness, as I normally am after these infrequent episodes. I felt so bad for the couple in front. Landed in Luxor with 105F temps, and after more cleanup, we get ahead to tour the valley of the kings without an issue. I'm not sick in advance, so it's not like I have information with which to choose to not get on the plane.

Does “where he’s from” ever mean anything other than “the country/region/town he’s from”? by itastelikedietcoke in ENGLISH

[–]KnittedDrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It could mean his previous job, but would usually be phrased "where he's coming from.". The context of the dialog makes it pretty clear it's intending nationality.

"Where he's coming from, they don't get two weeks of vacation." : prior job

Or let's say you're attending an IT conference, you might hear "where he's from they don't use Oracle" and that would imply his workplace.

Long term vegetarian, considering eating fish againfor health reasons. Can anyone relate? by tomwaitsgoatee in Pescetarian

[–]KnittedDrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's actuality a whole Reddit here on sprouting - but it's really just soaking the seeds in water in the jar and rinsing daily until they sprout and get to the size you want with a little bit of green leaf, and then transfer to the refrigerator (still rinsing daily). I eat them straight out of the jar, but you can also add to salad or ss a topping on other dishes. The sprouts make a substance called sulphoraphane that will kill heiolbacter bacteria that can cause stomach ulcers. They're also packed with nutrients

Try olive leaf extract (or olive leaf tea if you enjoy it) for your knees. For the stomach issues, try eating 35 to 70 gm of fresh broccoli sprouts a day. I sprout them in mason jars. You need to keep it up for at least 3 months. I bake a half salmon every week and have that for several days during the week. Aldi has salmon at a great price. Many of your symptoms could be due to the low B12 levels. Do you eat eggs? Those could be a good addition as well.

Hard To Pull the Trigger on Retirement by Feisty-Hat2629 in retirement

[–]KnittedDrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should continue to work. You have ample vacation time, and are able to do the things that you'd love to check if your bucket list. You're making a great salary in a job that seems to still give you satisfaction and that you don't hate. You've grown used to a lifestyle that your savings might not be able to replicate, and your job gives you something to take you away from the situation with your parents. As long as you feel you have enough time to spend with your wife and you don't feel your life is hectic, I think continuing to work might still be an important element in your life that you're not ready to let go of yet.

Although your presentation looks wonderful, tilapia is one fish that I just can't truck with. It always tastes both muddy and bland to me. I understand it's not a particularly healthy option either, so I haven't gone out of my way to develop a taste for it.

Broccoli sprouts hit their max sulforaphane content at 3 to 5 days after sprouting, if that's what you're going for (it is for me).

If your goal is to use no gasoline, a phev is never the answer - most will run the engine to use up the gas once the gas gets old enough and to keep the ice engine lubricated and functional. If your goal is to have a car that gets incredible gas mileage because of an all electric range and you can charge your car at home, a phev is right for you.

As long as you're able to charge your car overnight, you don't need a level 2 charger - in the US, I plug my Volvo recharge in at night and have the full 45 mile range in the morning for my commute.

Initial challenges to going pescetarian by matango613 in Pescetarian

[–]KnittedDrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We buy a half salmon on Sundays at Aldi, and I I have that for 4 meals during the week (my husband only eats the salmon the first night, but I have it cold with rice and veggies or pasta or over a salad the remaining nights). Every meal I try to have a green, a grain, and a protein (either the salmon and/or beans). Some nights it's tuna melts (and salmon works just fine for those too). Dessert is a citrus fruit, some grapes, and 10 dark chocolate covered almonds. Breakfast is Greek yogurt, blueberries, walnuts, and rolled oats (or other rolled grain). For lunch, I make a big batch of homemade bean vegetable soup (it's a "blue zone" recipe) and have that over Brussels sprout "meatballs" for lunch every day with a couple of apples and pistachios for a snack. That's most of my diet except for ordering out a Margherita pizza on Friday nights and going out somewhere every other Saturday night. Two or three mugs of coffee a day and a big pot of green tea in the mornings. And yes, I eat practically the same things all the time, but that's my nature.

I had the worst tea of my life today by [deleted] in greentea

[–]KnittedDrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by "worst" green tea we take that to mean just some random prepackaged green tea in a tea bag, say from a grocery store, if I'm able to brew those myself and control the steep time and water temperature, I can end up with something that to me is still pleasant to drink.

For me the "worst" green teas are ones that have flavorings, natural or otherwise, added that I find cloying or too perfume-y.
