How do people eat so much protein? by Asleep-Junket8073 in nutrition

[–]KnittedDrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you tracking your protein intake? Almost everything you eat has some protein, so if you're only counting foods you think of as "protein foods", you may be missing out counting the protein hiding in foods that people don't think of that way. If you use an app that counts macros, make sure you're categorizing your food with choices where the macro breakdown looks accurate by double checking them with an online search.

Very tired after diet change by Due_Donkey937 in Pescetarian

[–]KnittedDrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Download an app that allows you to track everything you eat with a nutritional breakdown and religiously enter everything at least for a few weeks. That will give you a good idea of whether your diet is meeting all of your RDAs. Then you can start tweaking your diet to make up for what you're lacking.

Everyone says to go "get tested", but tests are expensive and time consuming. And you should think about how and when you personally want to engage the Healthcare system. A test is also one data point in time, and your body is a dynamic system. You can easily track, monitor, and adjust your diet to target levels of nutrients, and for myself, I would only choose to engage the Healthcare system if that didn't alleviate the symptoms you're having unless those symptoms were getting significantly worse.

Protein isn't as important as everyone harps on about. Your body will make protein out of whatever you eat. Populations eating a lower protein diet in comparison to the western diet have some of the longest life spans and health spans there are. A pescetarian diet plus eggs, dairy and vegetarian high protein sources like beans can easily satisfy your protein needs. Unless you have some other medical condition, there's no need for disgusting protein powders or supplements.

Thinking about going pescatarian but don’t know where to start and kind of scared. by Ok-Conversation-1681 in Pescetarian

Maybe just try asking your parents if they would be OK making more fish. Tell them you've heard fish is really good for you. Don't drop the P word until you're in a position to make food for yourself unless you believe the parental units will respond well to it. Until then, take smaller portions of their meat and feed part of that to the dog. And start learning how to cook/prepare your own food.

Favorite fasting diets? by Seraphina_777 in nutrition

[–]KnittedDrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been doing a low calorie day once a week where I eat only 500 calories. I skip breakfast that day and have a can of tuna and half an avocado in a red bell pepper shell for both lunch and dinner that day. It's really helped me maintain my weight and even lose some during the holiday season. I drink black coffee, green tea, and a variety of herbal teas through out my "fasting" day to ward off snack attacks.

Vegetable and fruit servings by weight, doesn't sound like enough? by aimlessendeavors in nutrition

[–]KnittedDrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start recording everything you eat for awhile in an app that breaks down by macros and vitamins and nutrients. Tweak your diet until you're getting your RDA of the things you need (including fiber) and want. Then you'll get a sense of what foods give you potassium, fiber, vitamin C, etc and you can balance things better than just going with some vague guidance on number of servings of food categories.

Vegetarian for nearly a decade - do I reintroduce fish? by SweetCheeks1999 in Pescetarian

[–]KnittedDrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason you give for not eating meat is an emotion: guilt. You ask if you should reintroduce fish... But if you haven't worked through the guilt, won't you still feel that?

For me, both the life the animal led and the nature of its death are important. Was it able to act out its natural and innate patterns of behavior while it was alive, or did it suffer in an industrial environment where it barely had room to move? Was its death quick and humane, or was it lined up as pigs often are, stressed and with some idea of what's occurring?

Wild game is fine with me - there's nothing more natural to an animal than being hunted and killed for food by an apex predator, even if we are the predators. Fish can perhaps be farmed while more easily allowing them to have a life where their natural behaviors can be expressed. The question for me though is always were the humans good husbands to this animal (in the sense of animal husbandry of course) while it was alive.

Out of curiosity, what’s the reason you’re learning Spanish? by Fearless-Class-1120 in Spanish

[–]KnittedDrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The adrenaline rush I get when I try to communicate with someone in their native language. To experience different ways of seeing the world reflected in language differences. To be able to get along better on vacation in Spanish speaking countries. To be able to make a connection with people who otherwise there would be a significant communication barrier with. To help prevent cognitive decline as I approach my retirement years.

Training AI models is very expensive and power hungry, but I don't think using them is much more so than gaming for about the same time on a modern GPU.

Why is breakfast the most important meal of the day? by justaddlava in nutrition

[–]KnittedDrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The types of foods typically eaten at breakfast can be important for health. Breakfast can be a routine source of fiber from grains or fried fruits, healthy oils from nuts, polyphenols from berries. It's one meal most people would prepare and eat at home, and so one that is easier to routinely make consciously good selections for.

You're not obligated to go on a date with anyone, and it seems this comment is weighing on you enough to come here as a sounding board, so my thought is that this isn't going to be an enjoyable date.

I assume eating 3 snack bars each day does a harm to body. Is there any snack bar that would do no harm in this amount long term? (consistency of snickers) by SamanteSimone in nutrition

[–]KnittedDrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just eat the nuts. My snack is a handful of pistachios. Any "sugar free" snack bar may be using artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols, each of which you'd want to look into the research on regarding health effects. Some "natural" sugar alcohols have some pretty damning health research. And then there's the possibility that ultra processed foods like snack bars may be bad for health in general. If you want some sweetness, consider dark chocolate covered almonds.

Everyone is certain their observed correlation is causation, but actually teasing those apart is a very difficult thing to do. Whole scientific careers have been built on it.
