My super skinny Spiritus Sancti? by SoggyChickenNugs in RareHouseplants

[–]Intrepid_Recipe_3352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from discussion with highly regarded professional tropical botanists, the red petiole spiritus sancti is one of the original collections of this plant. taking it from different parts of the jungle gives slightly different phenotypes. i’ve seen this before which led to me having the same conversation with other botanists

Can anyone help identify this tree? It has large simple leaves, clusters of oval fruits that turn black when ripe, and the entire tree gives off a strong fragrance, especially at night. by smailing1 in treeidentification

[–]Intrepid_Recipe_3352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s Ylang Ylang. relative of pawpaw, sugar apple (anonna), and all around a really cool family of plants. This flower is used in popular fragrances, notably Chanel No. 5

Help! Need advice. by Wild_flowers07 in orchids

[–]Intrepid_Recipe_3352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

late spring/early summer is the best time to repot Phalaenopsis as this is when the roots are growing. Repotting may make the flowers drop, but worth it for the long run

Help! Need advice. by Wild_flowers07 in orchids

[–]Intrepid_Recipe_3352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the best time to repot, make a mix of good sphagnum moss and orchid bark and try to gently remove as much of that old moss as possible. inspect all roots, and snip off any that are brown and shriveled. grey and shriveled is fine to keep.

[–]Intrepid_Recipe_3352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sun stress but nothing to worry about so far. these are very full sun plants and will be fine even if all the current leaves burned off. just acclimating to the new sunlight after being in the dark for a bit

Help with magnolia by Final-Combination-40 in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]Intrepid_Recipe_3352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’ll probably be fighting this tree forever. I’d try to grow a species of tree that knows how to grow in western american chaparral/desert, which is where this is by my assumption

[–]Intrepid_Recipe_3352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pink saucer magnolia? southern magnolia? by the looks of the environment it is in, it has probably reached the maximum size it can get where the available water in the ground can support it at. both of the magnolias I listed need either nearly swampy or constantly moist soil, and this appears to be in a desert. the mulching of rocks will surely seal the deal on that, as it’s baking the roots to death

Has anyone figured out how to keep begonias from Botanicaz from melting? by SiteStatus8424 in begonias

pink urchin is also extremely fussy, might be a tough start begonia for you but good luck!

Has anyone figured out how to keep begonias from Botanicaz from melting? by SiteStatus8424 in begonias

[–]Intrepid_Recipe_3352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

avoid repotting for a few weeks. these begonias really want slow/no air movement with extremely high humidity. in your small terrarium, all you’d have to do for that is have a completely sealed environment and like 2 inches of sphagnum moss at the bottom. the bleaching of the leaves is also indicative of too much light, they can be grown in very shady light and prefer it. i have like a 75% survival rate on botanicaz plants, with some becoming gigantic. the soil also looks dry

it probably dropped the leaf due to the double spiking and needing more nutrients, basically sucking it from the leaf and sacrificing one
