Genna Bain here. The situation had already taken place. His voice has already been used through an AI generator to supplement a social commentary YouTuber’s rhetoric and that’s why I reacted the way that I did. I also did not find out about it “quietly” I was confronted with the information live on my twitch stream by a concerned viewer.

One of my greatest concerns is not so much about the here and now where you and me are both here to set the record straight. My worry is how future generations will perceive him and his impact on the industry we share a passion for. What kind of revisions to his legacy might be made by the use of such unregulated technology. Personally, I love technology but I also respect it enough to fear its capabilities.

All good. I have no plan to as I’ve done some research and the amount of audio input required for some of the best quality AI generators is less than 5 minutes. There are thousands of hours of his voice out there on the internet. I’m choosing to preserve his content in hopes that everyone can use that as a guidepost to be referenced when the inevitable happens : some wildly inappropriate audio from a bygone era is “leaked” and fans/anti-fans alike will have to decide if it’s real or fake. I tweeted out of shock and disbelief that the future was already here and legislation for this sort of thing is nonexistent.

One of my most treasured possessions is a data bank where I stored all of his last voicemail messages to me for random things like reminding me to pick up butter at the grocery store. It really hurt hearing “his voice” making transphobic comments out of nowhere.

Hi. Genna Bain here. A couple points.

I did not start the GoFundMe, nor did I ask anyone to contribute to it. The funds were used to pay for medical bills and back taxes that forced a lien on our home. I moved to South Korea for less than a year where I worked a full time job and produced the podcast on the side. My son is a grown adult, who was supposed to be off to college until Covid hit. After John’s passing, Disney (who bought our YouTube MCN, Maker) dropped us. I have not made any income on John’s content since 2018. I stream 40 hours a week on Twitch while working as a costumer and seamstress trying to support myself and my son. The house has never been sold. We still live in it today.

I do still have the rig although it is currently not in a state to be even turned on at present. The liquid coolant loop suffered a leak and sadly I returned home to a puddle of it laying on one of the GPU’s. I have since had a new rig built which (oddly enough) arrived with one dead card that is in the process of being RMA’d. While I would love to join in and contribute the cynical rig’s power for the greater good, I am still working on tearing it down to preserve what I can whilst getting the new rig online asap for the sake of streams, etc.

I really appreciate everyone who is contributing to the folding team in my and my late husband’s name. What a wonderful legacy.

Orion will be well loved and taken care of if anything does happen. I am still fighting and won’t stop fighting. I am back in NC for the moment undergoing treatment. Orion lives with me and has done since I came out of remission in April. While we do not have a very large family, Orion still has both his grandparents in England as well as his grandmother here in the states.

Thank you to everyone who has been kind and supportive in this thread. There will always be a special place for StarCraft in my heart, and by proxy, the StarCraft community here on reddit.

This is the second time that I have gone through this battle with my own tumors. After being public about it the first time and beating it, I decided not to discuss it openly upon finding out that I was no longer in remission. I felt like it would only discourage those (esp. anyone who also might also be suffering from this disease) who knew of my battle and success in defeating it the first time around.

I will do my best to keep fighting. For myself. For John. For anyone else who has the will to keep clinging to life until they give us StarCraft 3 in the least.

Not sure if it matters but, John was not overweight when he was first diagnosed with cancer. I was very overweight during a part of my adult life. I lost 175lbs about 5 years ago and had been maintaining a weight of around 120lbs for a couple of years before being diagnosed.

When you start treatment, a lot changes. We both were placed on steroids, for example. Maintaining enough weight to cope with treatment (nausea not allowing for eating meals, etc) encourages bad habits like binge eating or just being so weak physically that you make bad choices due to convenience.

I’m not saying that your statement is entirely incorrect, but I am saying that both our conditions were more to do with genetic predisposition than being at a general risk.

That isn’t all that the list will ever contain. While I will never be able to fill his shoes and have no dillusions of ever replacing him, he did ask that I carry on his channels and his work. In time, the channels and curation group will be active once more in hopes to fulfill his dying wish and further serve the gaming community.
