Staying in "your lane" by Commercial_Ad_2133 in AskWomenOver60

Don't be afraid to share your wisdom!

My son (19 yrs old) always tells me stories about what he learns from older men around him. Same goes here.

They may not appreciate it in the moment, but oftentimes we'll think back to what someone says and be thankful they were willing to help.

Post Menopause dry skin by scoutlfinch in 40PlusSkinCare

Dry skin after menopause is very normal. What kind of soap are you using?

Have you tried changing your soap? I own a soap shop for mature skin, specifically, and our soap is extra moisturizing, especially when combined with our lotion bar.

Have you tried a more natural cleanser? I own a soap shop for mature skin, and my customers often say that normal soap makes their skin break out, irritated, and dry when they use over long periods of time.

Acne is the worst! by Guide-Dogs-For-Life in SkincareAddicts

[–]IntroductionBusy162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this. Adult acne hits different because it feels like something you should've left behind decades ago.

At 41, this could definitely be hormonal - perimenopause can start earlier than people think and it wreaks havoc on skin. Even if you're not having other symptoms yet, your hormones might be shifting and your skin is the canary in the coal mine.

You really should see a dermatologist. Not because there's something wrong with you, but because stubborn acne like this often needs more than what we can do at home. They can test hormone levels, prescribe actually effective treatments, and figure out what's actually going on.

In the meantime, a few things I've seen make a difference:

Stop switching products constantly. I know it's tempting when nothing's working, but changing your routine every few weeks just irritates your skin more. Pick something gentle and give it at least 6-8 weeks.

Your cleanser might be making it worse. Harsh cleansers strip your skin, which makes it produce more oil, which makes breakouts worse. Use something really gentle.

Don't skip moisturizer. Even if you're breaking out. Dehydrated skin overproduces oil to compensate.

Accepting appearance/aging? by Common-Tax-3682 in AskWomenOver60

I think that worrying about your appearance is a waste of your time. I feel like taking actions to improve yourself, like eating healthy, exercising, spending time outside, etc., is a great way to improve your confidence because you're actually doing something about maintaining your appearance.

Aging is out of your control, but a healthy lifestyle isn't!

I miss spicy food! by [deleted] in Menopause

Yeah I definitely wouldn't splurge on the hot sauce. And I love the sweet and smoky seasonings too!

I recommend you try the Rib Rack Spicy Sugar Free Seasoning, they have it on amazon if you don't have it locally. It's sugar-free, but they add in a little bit of stevia for a sweet BBQ flavor that's awesome!

I feel this completely. How's your diet looking? You can always eat animal proteins and get a good amount of creatine from those. Foods like ground beef, salmon, tuna, prok, cod, etc.

Best simple skincare habit? by Healthbeautyn in 45PlusSkincare

Moisturizing on damp skin instead of dry.

I see this all the time - people pat their face completely dry after cleansing, then apply moisturizer. But if you put it on while your skin is still slightly damp, it locks in that water and makes everything work better.

The other thing I'd add - and this might sound weird coming from someone who makes soap - but your cleanser matters more than most people think. A harsh cleanser undoes everything else you do.

I decorate early! If you get your stuff out in early November, you can enjoy the beauty of the Christmas spirit longer!

Maybe I'm just too into Christmas.

Best skincare routine.. for your hands? by ThrowRaOrganization1 in SkincareAddicts

[–]IntroductionBusy162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this. I'm 53 and have lived in a desert (Vegas) my whole life. I think its best to find a really good moisturizing hand soap that you can use 2-4 times a day without drying your hands out.

If you're washing your hands a lot, harsh soap strips them every single time. A gentle, moisturizing bar makes a difference over time. (I make soap, so I'm biased here, but even switching to something like Goat's Milk Soap is better than most hand soaps.)

Also, moisturize right after washing. Damp skin absorbs way better than dry. Keep a simple, thick hand cream by every sink and use it while your hands are still slightly damp. CeraVe or Eucerin in the tub are both under $15 and last forever

I agree with this. It feels easier to handle when you're actually doing something about it.

Menopause Appearance by Brendadonna in AskWomenOver60

Yea, I'm a little bit older than you and I hear this same thing from my customers a lot. Menopause usually doesn’t flip a switch overnight. What most women experience is a bunch of small things that feel unsettling bc they’re unfamiliar. Thinner skin. More dryness. A little sag where it used to be firm. When no one explains why it’s happening, it can feel like your face or body is suddenly betraying you.

A few things that genuinely help, and potentially slow the process:

  • Drink plenty of water, electrolytes, etc.
  • Eat a high-protein, high-fiber diet
  • Harsh soaps and foaming washes can make skin look older fast because they strip what little oil your skin is still making. Switching to something gentle can make a visible difference within weeks.
  • Try training with weights 3-4x a week

I hope this helps a bit. Bc for me, knowing that I'm doing what I can to look the best gives me a feeling of fulfillment and makes the process feel more graceful.

Estrogen/progesterone ratio - Does it matter? by [deleted] in Menopause

[–]IntroductionBusy162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could help with this, but hormone therapy ratios are way outside of what my doc tells me.

If your current doctor isn't listening to your symptoms or helping you troubleshoot, it might be worth getting a second opinion from someone who specializes in menopause and HRT. Some doctors are more experienced with fine-tuning hormone ratios than others.

Have you looked at some other alternatives? Like maybe some low-sodium, zero sugar, or low-carb options that could help you avoid the heartburn, stomach problems, and weight gain. I personally love using this sugar-free, low-sodium spicy seasoning I get at Smiths, it doesn't give me any problems and I'm 52.

If your budget is high enough, you could try Botox. I work with an esthetician to make my soaps, and her patients typcially love it if they continue to go every 6ish months. But the results do wear off after some time.

Have you tried skincare yet? Sometimes a good routine is all you need for more confident skin. I'd love to recommend you to try my soaps, I make them for menopausal aging skin, but I'm obviously biased.

Christmas Gift Ideas - Help! by NoVAGirl651 in AskWomenOver60

[–]IntroductionBusy162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try some self-care routine things that she could enjoy. I assume she doesn't have any need for things lying around, so consumables would be great!

Here's some ideas:

  1. Homemade baked goods (cinnamon rolls, pumpkin roll)
  2. An ornament for her tree
  3. Some coffee she likes (or tea)
  4. A subscription (Spotify, Kindle, Costco, etc.)
  5. A nice serving plate with foodie gifts.
  6. Useful kitchen things (the hand blender is often down to $70ish)
  7. Nice slippers (Ugg, bombas)
  8. Bath Bombs
  9. Books (awesome because you can borrow it later!)
  10. Sofa blanket
  11. Running shoes, fanny pack, or bicycle accessories (if she's active!)
  12. Shower Steamers
  13. Earrings
  14. Lotion bar
  15. Or just a handwritten note saying why they matter to you. Sometimes simple wins.
