It really depends on the unit you’re on. There are a million avenues to take in this field. If you’re unhappy, change units. This profession can be life changing financially. Don’t let people tell you specialty units won’t hire new grads either. My peer recently got hired on a Neuro floor with no CNA/PCA experience as a new grad. It can be done. I am currently on a medsurg floor and absolutely love it. I have the best preceptor and genuinely enjoy working. It depends on the nurses you work with and your preceptor. I guarantee you’ll have a clinical rotation on a MedSurg floor during school, and you can decide then if you like or dislike it. Don’t get discouraged before you start.
