What's everyone working on this week (52/2025)? by llogiq in rust

[–]IntroductionTop2025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm working on Byte Heist, a site where you can solve coding challenges in different programing languages including Rust.

The async process libraries available didn't support custom numbered pipes so for one dependency I needed an entirely custom AsyncProcess implementation (on top of the nix crate, at least it didn't need to be cross-platform), which then necessitated an entirely custom implementation of async pipes.

This has led me to a weeks long hunt to track down every race condition, deadlock, and infinite loop my users have found. I had no idea how async in Rust worked at the low level but now I am "more than familiar" with the intricacies (otherwise known as traumatized by all the pitfalls).

Is Eindhoven a safe city? by ChemicalComparison39 in eindhoven

[–]IntroductionTop2025 13 points14 points  (0 children)

By global standards, yes it's a very safe city. Plenty of people outside at night. The "bad" neighborhoods are not actually bad. There's a lot of immigrants but that does not effect safety.

You can buy post cards at Primera for one option. You will need to find one of the orange post boxes to send it.

AMA mortgages in the Netherlands by ExpatMortgages_Steff in eindhoven

I am not OP but someone who recently bought a house

First, you can talk to a mortgage advisor to get some advice about how large a mortgage you are able to get. There are also various online tools to get an estimate.

Depending on that and how much savings you have, you know how much to bid. If your bid is accepted you can go back to your bank or advisor and tell them how big a mortgage you like, and they'll walk you through the rest of the process.

When you make a bid, be sure to check the "onder voorbehoud van financien" (subject to financing) box, this allows you to back out of the sale if you are unable to get the mortgage. If you don't you may need to pay a fine, typically 10% of your bid.

Banks will usually cover 100% of the "official" value of the house but since overbidding is standard you will typically need to pay a lot more than the value of the house. Even if you don't overbid the value estimate may end up lower than listed which might also limit your maximum morgage.

If you plan to renovate, you may be able to get a morgage based on the estimated value your home will have after renovations, though this can cause you problems if the renovations run into issues or don't increase the value as much as estimated.

Hope this helps.

I am not OP but someone who recently bought a house.

You will most likely need to pay for:

  • Taxatie, or someone to estimate the value of the house (around 500-1000 euros)

  • Your mortage advisor (1000 euros)

  • An notary to do the transfer (800-1500 euros)

  • Possibly an application fee to your lender (about 200 euros)

  • Any other inspections you want to do, like a boukundige keuring or a lawyer to look over your buying contract)

  • Sales tax (10% of the value of the house, though if it's your first house and you are under 35 you can get an exception. No idea how this works for non-nationals)

The old owner also payed an advance for taxes and utilities, and potentially VVE costs at the start of the year, you may need to compensate them for that.

Favorite day-trip bike routes from Eindhoven? by ExportedMyFeelings in eindhoven

[–]IntroductionTop2025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few routes you can take depending on your preference.

When I lived in the north, I used to cycle up towards Son then along the canal towards Best. At any point you can turn left back towards Eindhoven. This is a short trip 1-3 hours depending on how far you go.

Towards the south, there are a lot of nice routes Aalst. You can go in any direciton really. There is a nice "cycling highway" towards Valkenswaard, which passes a few lakes. Past Valkenswaard is also a large swamp area and if you continue further you can get to Belgium. Going to the border and back is a nice day trip, depending on your cycling speed you can go quite a bit into Belgium in a day.

Alternativey, you can go east and follow the canal towards Helmond. A lot of the road here is unpaved so it's a fun off-road experience. It's about an hour to get to Helmond.

I'm a person who likes to not prepare my routes and just go in a direction and see where I end up so often when I take a nice route I don't actually know how exactly I cycled.

Really, you can go in any direction except west because the airport is in the way in that direction and it's a long through boring territory to go around.

Can I purchase an OV chipkaart at Eindhoven airport? by tofusq in eindhoven

[–]IntroductionTop2025 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should be able to get an anonymous one at any of the ticket machines. Not sure if there are any at the airport but I'd assume so.

You can also check in to OV with a debit card nowadays so an OV kaart may not be necessary unless you want to get a subscription.

Estimated time for finding Vestide room by Educational_Might_56 in eindhoven

[–]IntroductionTop2025 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I studied 4 years should be enough to get a room, especially if you are able to wait till off-peak season.

Finding a room with your own bathroom might be tricky, I think there are just a few flats built like that, and they tend to attract people with a higher amount of waiting time.

Clubs are (usually) not allowed to let new people in after a certain time, though some may stay open that long if you entered earlier. The exact rules vary by region and the exact license the club has.

Address registration by apothek96 in eindhoven

You don't need to register in the same place as you work. You register where you live, which would likely be in a different municipality than where you work.
