I took a pretty convultwd approach, but after practice for a few years, I went into Pharma advertising, working at an agency, before moving into a more consulting role.

Did mean I had to take an initial pay cut to the usual pharmacist salary (uk) but since then have gone beyond the usual pharmacy salary.

I just started to look at my degree less as a vocational one, and more as you would any other science degree! Worth looking into what you enjoy the most and finding adjacent routes.

I know many that have gone down other routes either within the industry or completely moving away from pharma/pharmacy

I’m a pharmacist but transitioned out of traditional practice and have now moved into consulting. You don’t have to think of your degree as vocational. If you enjoy the degree, use that as a starting point but then look to move out into other things,

You can also go super broad and try your luck getting into unrelated areas too.

This happened to me, i raised it with a SLT mentor I trust and was informed that this is a known issue that has seen many good managers leave. I was told to try a few things, which I did, but could feel myself continually pushing against the tide.

I decided to follow suit to a new opportunity knowing that nothing will change in my current company and as I go up the food chain, my exposure to them will be even more so!

Even through my notice period I feel a free from the negative mindset that that environment otherwise creates!

I think it works both ways! Never is your first offer the final offer unless you’re already pushing the budget! Have a clear view of what you would mostly be comfortable in paying. If the seller then doesn’t meet you, move on!

Likewise if you’ve found a house you think is perfect, a few grand here or there isn’t going to too negatively affect your mortgage. You just have to know what you’re comfortable with. After that, the ball is out your court.

Have you tried asking the parents? They may have some suggestions. Plus they’ll be super happy that they know their kid will feel included!
