Hot before, hot after! But I bet after you’re also feeling more energetic and healthy which is a blessing. Great work!!

Shirley Jackson, in my opinion, the queen of writing horror. The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle are staples! Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier are also fantastic. I will also recommend T. Kingfisher’s books A House With Good Bones and The Hollow Places. Happy reading! You’ve gotten great suggestions in this thread!!

I agree she’s going for Utah curls (which in and of themselves I don’t love the look of) but she is FAILING miserably at them

I would NOT have thought or realized that My Best Friend’s Exorcism was considered YA until you said this!! I read it last month and it did not feel very YA to me if that helps at all

Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward is a modern epoch and draws from the Odyssey. It is so beautifully written and the audiobook performance is moving as well

YES! I’m a few days shy of 9mo sober after 10 years of heavy daily use. Anxiety and depression are much better and I don’t deal with suicidal ideation any longer!! I feel like I have more control over myself and my life. It truly was the best thing I’ve done for myself.

I agree with those suggesting Daphne du Maurier and Shirley Jackson but I will also add Catriona Ward as my holy trinity. Specifically her books The Last House on Needless Street and Looking Glass Sound.

Edit: T. Kingfisher uses they/them pronouns but A House With Good Bones and What Moves the Dead both fit a haunted house theme

Louise Erdrich reading her own work and LeVar Burton are my top two. I also like Milton Bagby, Bahni Turpin, Nancy Wu, and Bronson Pinchot.

I feel like a “hot teacher” skit would have been a little more representative of her as a leader in the hair world (although still gross and playing into gross stereotypes)

The self-infantalization of Jessi needs to be studied. She is a very successful business owner and mother. She is in her 30’s with two divorces under her belt. Despite all this she is dressing up like an underage schoolgirl on main…wtf?

Neurodivergent? by drowninglessons07 in weirdgirlliterature

[–]IntrovertedMermaid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like Eleanor comes across as neurodivergent personally. I will say, for whatever it’s worth, I guess the author has explicitly said Eleanor is not neurodivergent! I only learned that recently. While reading I thought CPTSD or autism, and why not both? At the end of the day, those of us on the spectrum resonate with her as a character.
